Chapter 87: I thought you were wise...

Selene POV

My heart didn’t flutter from his nearness but his kindness.

Reid is the last person I expect to show warmth to me even if it was a tiny bit. Opting not to argue, I allowed him to carry me in his arms as we started towards the upper towns. As we walked, my mind was whirling with a thousand questions. How did Reid know I’d be there? It was no coincidence that he had suddenly stumbled into me.

What was this sudden love he was showing me? I couldn’t understand... from where I was in his arms, I studied his profile. His jaw was clenched and his eyes were void, almost blank and without emotion something I noticed was common here. I didn’t know if it was a Lycan thing but their coldness was unnerving and most times when Noah looked at me like that it would be difficult to know what he was thinking.

"H-How..." I trailed off swallowing hard as his gaze flicked to me for a second before he continued on the road "How did you find me?" I asked. "No one knew I was leaving the pack house and I know that Noah is swamped with work. So, how did you find me?" I nagged. "Wait!" my eyes widened in realization "Don’t tell me you were following me,".

"As if," he scoffed and slowed down next to a car that was parked. With one hand holding me as if I was a rag doll, he opened the passenger seat of the car and deposited me in, with a gentle carefulness that I didn’t know he possessed. Something was off... Something didn’t sit right.

I watched as he turned around the car and slipped into the driver’s seat. I studied him again, trying to look for signs that he wasn’t someone disguised as Reid. I wanted to ask him questions but he could have easily done his research if he was coming for a mission like this, so it’ll be easy.

"Can I see your hand?" I asked stretching my hand towards him. He turned to me, arching a brow in my direction.

"Whatever for?" He asked.

"I just want to see it," I insisted, trying to sound firmer. "Please give me your hand..." I asked again.

He ignored me and reached instead for the keys to the car, and turned it on, as the engine sputtered to life. "I am Reid, not someone disguised as him. No other creature can take on the form of a Lycan in case you do not know. Even foxes that are best in the game cannot take up the form of a Lycan... So, chill out a bit," he sneered.

"Then why are you being nice to me?" I relaxed into the chair waiting for him to navigate through the parking lot. It wasn’t until we hit the road that I continued questioning him. "Typical Reid would have left me back there but you carried me in your arms, Reid... what’s going on?"

"I have to protect you, Luna Selene. We might have our differences but I cannot turn a blind eye when you’re in danger. I’m bound by duty to Noah and..." he sighed "I know he loves you stupidly. I wouldn’t want him to suffer... that’s why we must keep you alive,".

I sank against my seat, reflecting on his words. It reminded me of Lucius – Xavier’s Beta. Betas were always like that so I decided to believe him. We drove in silence until we arrived at the Packhouse. I waited until he parked the car and wanted to slip out. Reaching out to stop him by holding his hand... I gave him an earnest look.

"How did you find me, Reid? I need to know,".

His eyes left my face to where my hands held his arm and then he shook it off. Raising his gaze again to meet my face, he said quietly. "You don’t need to know. The most important thing is you’re fine,".

"Okay," I nodded... it was useless to keep insisting he tell me but I could give him options and see if I could get an answer. "But it wasn’t Noah, right? Or the girls?" I asked.

"No!" he said coldly

"Okay," I nodded and gave him a pleading look "One last thing, can we keep this between us? Even though I didn’t leave the Packhouse because ...".

"Don’t worry, Luna," he interrupted me straightening "I have no intention of letting someone else know, even your mate," then he turned on his heels and left me there. I knew we were back to being the cold enemies we were.

After spending thirty minutes in the car trying to figure out who must have tipped Reid and if he knew why I was out, I gave up. I didn’t have friends...and the only people who knew where I was going were the girls’ nanny – Faustina and Brenna. Sighing, I finally left the car and started towards the girl’s bedroom. I wanted to make sure they were sleeping.

As I walked the hallway, two distinct scents wafted up to my nose. They belonged to Noah and Xavier respectively and it seemed they were heading my way. For a second, I panicked. I didn’t want to deal with them now, I didn’t have the strength after everything that had happened tonight. Backtracking my steps, I hurried along the hallways looking for a place to hide. I could hear their footsteps echoing closer... in a few minutes, they’ll become visible.

As I hurried, I was turning the knobs to each door, hoping that one of them would open eventually, a small door tucked in between two doors opened and I slipped in just as they rounded the bend and became visible. I placed my back on the door trying to catch my breath. I closed my eyes, holding my breath as I waited for them to pass. After they walked past, I opened my eyes and exhaled deeply.

"What are you doing?"

I jumped in fear as a cry escaped my lips at the face that was looming above me. When I squinted my eyes and saw who it was, I relaxed slightly, as my chest heaved with fear.

"Why are you being all creepy?" I hissed as I recognized Reid. He had a glass of a drink in his hand as he had changed into something more casual.

"I should be asking you that," he retorted "What are you doing here?"

"I was going to my room and heard Noah and Xavier coming in this direction. I wasn’t ready to face them so I hid. What about you? What is this place and what are you doing here?" My eyes scanned the room noticing it looked like a bar.

There was a bar with drinks at the middle of the room and then with a lot of chairs and tables just in a typical bar setting. "What is this place?" I asked again, pushing from the door as I began to tour the room "I’ve never been here,".

"Well, now you have," he hissed "Just go already... I wanted to have an alone time to myself, don’t ruin it for me please,".

"Relax, Reid," I threw over my back "I need relaxing too and I have to be sure than I don’t run into those men. It’ll be awkward for me. So, can I just hang here with you? I promise to be on my best behavior,".

He looked at me for a while and then shook his head and went to sit on the stool at the bar counter. Silence reigned as I watch him scribble something in what looked like a journal of some sort and would stop occasionally to take a sip from his drink. I was dying from curiosity to ask him what he was doing but I might as well be talking to a wall.

Timing when he stopped to reach for his drink, I shifted closer to him: "Did Noah tell you that I asked him for a divorce?"

Reid jerked upright so abruptly that the liquid in the glass he was holding sloshed over the rim, splattering on his shirt. He sputtered, choking on the liquid in his mouth as he looked at me as if he had just seen a ghost.

Thumping a fist against his chest, he wheezed "You... You what?"

His eyes which were cold some seconds ago had turned pale and looked as if I had just told him I had a second head or I wanted to sleep with him. My gaze held his bewildered stare, my emotions resolute.

"He didn’t tell you?" I asked flatly, leaning against the sofa I was on "I asked him for a divorce because it’s clear that I am a nuisance in the pack. The people do not love nor regard me as their queen so, there was no need for me to keep dragging the issue,".

"Are you mad?" He gave a short brisk laugh, his voice was still a rasp and he was still trying to recover his breath,". He slammed the glass down, the liquid slopping over the sides.

"After everything that he has sacrificed for you...you want to walk away? From one of the most powerful Lycan King in the world?" he lets out a harsh, disbelieving laugh "I’ll admit... I thought you were wise... I hoped that you were smart seeing all the things you did for the pack when you first arrived but I had no idea you were a fool and greatly deluded,".

This was definitely not the reaction I was expecting.

I mean... this was Reid that has tormented me since my union with Noah... I was expecting him to jump and be ecstatic with joy. So, why was he angry?
