Chapter 84: Listen to Kurtis...

Xavier POV

"I asked her to leave you," I replied with a calm smile.

And watched as Noah stiffened staring at me. I could see doubt flicker in his eyes as he stared at me with shock. He knew that somehow; I could be behind Selene’s sudden unusual behaviour but why was he coming to ask?

It took him almost a minute to fully understand my audacity, when he spoke, his tone was calm and he seemed normal but I knew he was furious. One of the abilities of a Lycan is how they can mask their emotions for a long time without revealing their new intentions to an enemy.

It was a special ability that only Lycan possessed and I knew how dangerous my uncle Noah could be in that kind of situation. Although he wasn’t always one who was quick to do things no matter how angry he was. I’ve seen him wait patiently for four years when his former Gamma misbehaved.

For four years, he pretended not to know that money was being embezzled behind his back, nor did he bother to have him arrested. Until one of the mornings, he woke up and ordered for his Gamma’s execution. It had come as a blow to everyone because it had gone on for four years, so everyone just assumed he had forgotten but subsequently, that was how he always punished people.

He would speak to them once or twice and after that, he would wait before punishing them suddenly. For a moment, I wondered if it would get to that stage where he would use his power as the King to do whatever he wanted to do. Even thinking about it right now made me realize that he had never tried to be forceful or try to flaunt his power in front of me.

"By the way, Uncle..." I raised my hand interrupting him when I saw he wanted to talk "Why is it that you’ve never used your power against me,".

"Use my powers against you? What do you mean?" he asked

"You’re the king... King of the Easter region. You’re probably one of the most connected kings after King Tanner of the West. You’re wealthy, smart... you know, all those good qualities but you’ve never tried to take advantage of them. You could alter the law and put in a clause claiming Selene as your wife and ordering that no one goes close to her,".

"First of all, you need to get your facts right, Xavier... Selene is my wife... and I don’t need to alter any law to prove that. Moreover, you’re a man and I am a man... unfortunately, we both love the same woman, but that will still not make me fight you. Selene would have to choose between us eventually... that’s the only fight I intend to put up with,".

"What if she chooses me?" I teased "I am mated after all; my bond still leaves inside her. You may not stand a chance if there’s me and you in an option. Not only am I her mate but we also have a child between us. Aren’t you worried about that?"

He scoffed as his gaze left my face for a second and stared at the distance behind me. When he looked back at me, there was amusement in his eyes.

"You let her go, Xavier," he started "You had a good woman, you claim you love her but you still let her go. Make it make sense... if you love her so much, then you couldn’t have let me have her. You would have kept her by your side until she believed you were a changed person. Is this your ego playing out? You, not wanting to seem like a loser or something because, for the life of me, I do not understand why you’d do that,".

Fear sprung into my heart for a second as I considered his words... Did I not love Selene? I missed her... my wolf Colton nags me every day about her... that is love, right? I had a smile on my face flying down to Greyhound because I knew I would see not only the girls but also her.

Because I wanted to stay a while, I had forced the Alphas to travel three days before the meeting in a pretence of bringing the issue with Alpha Kurtis before him knowing that he wouldn’t do anything.

My gaze travelled back to Noah who was watching me silently. An uneasy tension hung in the air as we regarded each other – like opponents in a boxing ring until finally Noah broke the silence.

"Why did you ask Selene to leave me?" his voice was low and controlled but I could also hear the undercurrent of restrained anger.

I met his gaze boldly, refusing to be intimidated. "Because it’s the truth. This pack, this life, you!... Isn’t making her happy anymore. She’s a shadow of herself and the kids too are getting constantly abused and you’ve done nothing about it. As a father, I know how defining the early stages of a child’s life can be defining. I don’t want my kids to grow up listening to people call their mother a slut,".

A muscle ticked in Noah’s chiselled jaw as he continued to regard me with an unsettling calm "Is that the only thing you told her? What else did you tell her? I want to hear it all,".

"Well," I shrugged "I asked her to leave with me, to find someplace where she can truly thrive. Where she won’t be called names and would be respected,".

"Impressive," he chuckled "Anyways I am not going to go back and talk about how much she was disrespected by everyone in your pack and you her husband enabled an environment for her to be regarded as nothing more than a ceremonial Luna. There’s a lot I want to say of course but why are you interfering in my marriage? You have no right to do that,".

"I don’t?" I arched a brow snorting, "Dearest Uncle, Selene is the mother of my children and even if both of you remain married for 100 years which I greatly doubt, I am very much going to meddle in your life all the time. I may have been a bad partner in the past but I cannot stand and see that she’s neglected or has to put up with what she came out from again,".

He clenched his fists at his sides, struggling visibly to keep his control. "And I suppose you think you can give her the happiness she deserves?"

"Maybe," I answered smugly "But just so you know, I am not trying to take her from you, Uncle. Selene will come back to me on her own accord. But before that, I just want her to stay happy. When are you going to fix the issues on the ground?"

"I am trying my best, Xavier," he cried "I have a lot going on here,".

"You’re the king," I told him pointedly "You can simply command anything you want but you’re not even making an effort. Relegating important matters that concern your wife to your Beta? That’s a laugh,".

He recoiled slightly at my accusation, as his face contorted into desperation "I am not a brutal tyrant. My government runs in such a way that we do not clamp down on the freedom of the people to express whatever is in their minds. They have free will and choices, and no matter what happens, I must always consider them and also my wife,".

"So, your pack comes first before your wife?" I asked.

Running a hand through his tousled hair, he sighed heavily as he gave me a pleading gaze. "I love Selene with everything in me. Can’t you see that? Everything I’ve done up until now is to bring her closer to me. Can’t you see that? Why would you ever wish to see us separated? Fine... she may not love me back as much as I want but I love her, Xavier. She’s my world... can’t you see that she’s lost from you forever? She’s trying to leave me because she thinks I am becoming like you and you think she’ll come back to you? For Moon’s sake..." he hissed.

I opened my mouth to reply to him with an equal protestation of my own and also tell him that I loved Selene more than he could ever know and how much I wanted to make this right but it was useless. My love profession will not do me any good.

Taking a deep breath, I turned my attention back to him.

"One of the reasons why I made Kurtis an Alpha is because he’s more experienced than all of the other Alphas. He thinks on his feet and he’s loyal except when you cross him. In case you don’t know this, Most of the Alphas present here today paid him to eliminate me. When they found that we had those resources abundant,".

"Why are you telling me all of these?" Noah inquired looking at me suspiciously.

"If King Tanner is sending an emissary for his daughter... he’s most likely going to attack as soon as they leave and there are a lot of lapses with your military and I won’t blame them because there’s been peace for so long. What I am trying to say is, I want you to listen to Kurtis... he has something important to tell you,".
