Chapter 74: Twice as much!

Xavier POV

Present Time

My girls jumped on my body nearly knocking me down.

"Easy girls," I chuckled settling each of them in my arms "I wasn’t expecting this sort of reaction, it seems you all missed me,".

"Of course, Daddy," Maeve pouted "We were just telling Mommy the other day if she could allow us to come over to Greyhound for a break. We’ve missed you so much,".

"Aren’t you in the middle of a school year? Or is it vacation time yet?" I asked, surprised.

"Xavier, we weren’t expecting you," Selene suddenly said from where she was in the room. She rose to her feet and came towards me maintaining her distance "When did you come in?"

Colton purred with delight as we took in her sweet scent but I shook my head to clear it.

"It’s the quarterly annual meeting with the King, so we’re here in this regard. I hope you’re well and the girls. How’s life as a queen treating you?"

I saw the smile slip from her face for a second and she was about to respond when the door opened again and Noah came in wearing a displeased look. I saw his eyes flicker between me and his wife but thankfully, I had the girls in my arms.

"Your majesty," I bowed in reverence

"Why are you here, Alpha?" His tone was steely "You only arrived and you’re already touring the rooms,".

He was angry and rightly so. If I had the vision of beauty who was staring at us blankly as my wife, I would probably be angry that she has to move around and have men see her beauty. I also knew that the only reason why my uncle was lenient with me was because I was his kin and perhaps for the girls too.

"I came to greet the girls, I didn’t know I would meet the Queen here," I furnished "But I’ll be leaving now and join up in the meeting room,".

"The meeting is cancelled," Noah said quietly as his gaze settled on his wife who had a faraway look "Since you only arrived, it’ll be best if you relax a bit at least for the first day. I’ve asked that rooms be prepared for every one of you and I’ll see you in the evening hours, there’s something outside the meeting, I want us to talk about,".

"As you’ve commanded, Your Majesty," I bowed and watched as he entered the room and went to Selene. Without being told, I shepherded the girls outside the room not before I saw Selene flinch as Noah lifted his hands to touch her.

As soon as we were out of the room, I allowed the girls to take me to the bedrooms. When we entered, they immediately shut the door.

"Daddy, I don’t think, mommy is happy. She has been trying to put on a brave face but I know she’s not,’ Vina was the first person to speak.

"She’s not happy?" I frowned "Why did you say so? Is that what she told you?" I followed up.

"A few days ago, an incident happened in school, maybe that’s what it making her unhappy and it doesn’t help because Alpha Noah is not doing anything to help her out,".

"I don’t understand," I raised my hands to stop the girls from speaking all at once "What happened in school? And why isn’t the King helping her?"

The girls exchanged worried looks and remained silent.

"Say something, girls," I tried to sound patient and reasonable.

"I don’t know if we should tell you this, I don’t want Mommy to be angry,".

"That’s the more reason you should tell me. I know we’re not together but I should know what goes on with you girls and also with her because she’s your caretaker. I need to know if you’re in capable hands with her,".

"Fine!" Vina sighed "Right from the day that mommy got married to Alpha Noah, no one seems to be in support of the marriage. They’ve called her all kinds of names; others have told her boldly to her face that she’s not fit to be called a queen and should leave. As if that’s not enough, I and Maeve are constantly bullied in school. They say our mom is a slut and other mean names,".

The blood left my face at the revelation and my mouth hung open. How long has this been going on?" I asked.

"For a while now," Maeve lowered her gaze "Even before we met you we knew you were our daddy. Everyone hated mommy and they call us bastards,".

Anger surged through me as I pictured my girls in the playground, being called names and I was more distressed about the emotional effect it would have on them than I was angry. This wasn’t the life I wanted them to have. I couldn’t believe that even Selene had to go through the same ordeal.

"And you say the King has done nothing to this effect?" I asked.

"We truly don’t know Daddy but mommy says he’ll do something. I’m just so worried that everything will lay heavily on her eventually and it’ll make her sad," Vina’s voice shook as she told me "I don’t want anything to happen to her,".

"Hey, it’s okay, honey," I pulled her into my arms "I’ll take care of it,".

"Daddy, how about we go back with you to Greyhound and come back when everything is settled here?" Maeve asked, "Please can you talk to mummy and tell her that?"

"My love, Greyhound is not safe now," I started "There’s a lot of things going on and I would feel better if you’re here with your mom. At least, here is safer,".

"Then I won’t just go to school anymore," Maeve said and folded her arms across her chest "Because I can’t stand being called the daughter of a slut,".

"Don’t worry," I beamed at her, "Everything will be fine, I’ll try to work on it now that I’m here,".

"Can I see the queen?" I asked politely.

This was probably the fifth or sixth time I was coming to see Selene but each time, I’ll be turned away at the door by the guard standing there and flimsy excuses. It’s either they claim she was sleeping or was taking lessons... by the time I came up the third time to see her, I knew someone was purposely keeping her away from me.

"I’m sorry, Alpha but Her Majesty is currently busy and will not be taking any visitors today,".

"Fine," I nodded "Then can you pass a note to her?" I stretched the piece of paper in my hand towards the maid but she looked at it and refused to take it from me. Whoever was stopping Selene from seeing it, also wanted us to break all forms of conversation.

"I’m sorry, Alpha," The maid trembled "But...".

"Don’t worry!" I nodded "I’ll go," I smiled at her and then turned on my heels. I knew who I was going to meet.

I didn’t bother to knock before I admitted myself into Noah’s office. He was on his desk speaking into a phone and his Beta Reid was pouring through some documents, sitting on the couch. His eyes widened as soon as he saw me but it was quickly replaced with an amused look on his face.

"Alpha," he nodded in my direction.

I acknowledged his greeting with an equally polite nod and walked past him to Noah who barely acknowledged my presence until he was done with his call. When he finished, his eyes drifted from me to his wristwatch before he looked up at me again.

"It’s not evening yet, why are you here?"

"Why did you restrict me from seeing the mother of my children? I’ve gone there a couple of times but I was barred from entering? Is this how you treat her? Like a prisoner?"

He shrugged his shoulders, his expression still blank as he regarded me. "Why would you want to see her? What business do you have with her? The girls are available to you? So why are you insisting on seeing my wife,".

"Because she’s the mother of my kids and their caretaker!" I yelled "I need to know how she’s doing and confirm that she’s capable of caring for them. You can’t just restrict me from gaining access to her,".

"I can," he said stubbornly "And she’s busy with the pack’s business today. So perhaps another day,".

"You know that’s a fucking lie!" I screeched and turned to the other side of the table to confront him directly.

Immediately, Reid rose to his feet and tried to stop me when Noah nodded and told him to leave me alone.

"I don’t know how you’ll fucking do it but you’ll call those people that you set as sentry in front of her room and ask them to leave her alone. You’re making her suffer for no reason. What did she ever do to you?"

"There’s nothing I’ve done to Selene that you haven’t done twice as much and even worse!".
