Chapter 135: I slept with Brooke...I don’t regret it...

Selene POV

Noah stared at me as if I was a stranger and he was meeting me for the first time.

Slowly, with precise slow movement, he pushed himself up from his chair and moved around the desk until he stood directly before me. Up close, I could see the faint shadows of exhaustion ringing his eyes. A muscle in his jaw flexed as our gaze met.

I know these last few days have not been easy for him coupled with how rocky our relationship has been lately. I longed to reach out to him, to smooth out the rigid lines of tension from his body with my touch, but his next words froze me.

"I’m fine," he stated without emotion and if he wasn’t standing before me, I could have sworn he was a stranger. "You’ve returned at last. That’s good,".

The caution and the lack of tenderness in his voice sent a chill down my spine. The Noah I knew would be all over me, but he was treating me worse than a stranger. Suddenly, he reached out to me and my heart pumped with anticipation but rather than pulling me into his embrace as I had hoped, his hand settled on my shoulders in an awkward, stiff gesture.

Then he let it drop, then turned his gaze away. "I need some time alone, Selene. A lot happened in your presence and I just want to gather my thoughts," he said over his shoulder. "You should go back to your room and rest. We...will talk more later,".

The clear dismissal felt like a physical blow to me but I could excuse that and reason that it could be because of the whole saga with Conrad but why wasn’t he concerned about where I was or where I had been taken to?

"I know you have a lot on your plate so do I, but we need each other more than anything now, Noah... I need to be with my mate... my husband. Please,"

But he ignored me and lowered himself on his seat, with his bank turned to me as if I was no more than a maid imposing in his privacy. As if I was nothing at all to Noah anymore.

"Noah!" my voice cracked and I hated how pathetic I sounded but I couldn’t bring myself to do otherwise. I wanted to be with this man. "At least talk to me, don’t turn your back to me, please, I beg you"

"Go away Selene!" he murmured, his bag still turned to me "Let’s not say words that we would both regret later, so, please... just leave,".

I stood there, staring at Noah, unable to say anything. After standing for nearly five minutes, he didn’t turn to look at me, his back was still turned to me. I turned and left his office. When I came out, my breath was coming out in short spasms, I beat at my chest, trying to fight the tears at the back of my throat. Nothing could have prepared me for what Noah was trying to do to me.

"Everything will be fine, Selene," I murmured to myself. "He’s just out of it, he’ll come around later," I said to myself again trying to convince myself despite the tiny voice in my head. Since my eyes were closed, I didn’t notice that someone was standing in front of me until I opened my eyes. When I did, I saw Brooke looming over me with a smirk playing on her lips.

Straightening, I faced her "What is it?"

"Nothing Luna!" she chuckled "I was just wondering what you were doing outside Noah’s office. Is everything alright? Were you trying to see Noah? He called me a few minutes ago and asked to see me but with you here, maybe I’ll just go back,".

"No!" I leaned away from the door, trying to sound as natural as possible "You can go in. I just finished seeing him now and I was trying to catch my breath. You know how it feels most times when you meet your mate and you’ll feel so flustered and...".

"That’s great!" she didn’t allow me to finish "I’m so glad you’re trying to resolve the issue between you and Noah because from what I heard... things seem to be going haywire between both of you. But I’m truly happy for you. I promise. Now, we should meet up later and talk about my tasks as your Beta..." seeing the confusion on my face, she laughed dryly "You haven’t forgotten about that now, have you?"

"Listen to me, Brooke!" I squared my shoulders staring at her eyes "I don’t know what is making you so confident, honestly but this would be the last time you address me without my permission. As you know I am the Luna of this pack and I have a say in matters as tiny as choosing a Beta. So... until I agree to your appointment, you’re not my Beta,".

"Really!" she took a step towards me a smirk on her lips "I don’t know if you’ve heard so much about me but with this, I’m guessing you haven’t. Well, first... I always get what I want. Regardless of who it belongs to. And I want to be your Beta...you know what, shouldn’t you be happy that I am not vying for your position?"

"Is that supposed to make me scared or what?" I fired back looking at her calmly "You think threatening me with Noah will scare me? I don’t know what you think you know about men but Noah is..." Before I could finish speaking, she sniggered, her eyes shining with amusement. She took one long look at me before she knocked on Noah’s door and ushered herself inside.

For a moment, I was tempted to place my ears on the door to find out what she was saying but I decided against it. Swallowing hard, I decided to go and check on the girls. As I walked towards their room, I noticed the ominous glances from the servants who passed me. They were either whispering or murmuring something to themselves and it made me uncomfortable. When I got to the girls’ room, I noticed they were sleeping and only Brenna was in the room with them.

When I entered the room, she quickly rose to her feet, "Your majesty!"

"The girls are asleep?" I commented sinking into the sofa in the room "Did something happen in my absence? Everyone is looking at me quite strangely,".

"Maybe it’s because you’ve not been around for a while," Brenna replied without meeting my gaze "Plus the dark moon saga took a toll on everyone. The lower villages were ransacked and most of the people were attacked but thankfully we didn’t lose anyone. Still, I think everyone is just trying to be cautious about that,".

"Yeah!" I nodded still not convinced "Did anything happen out of the ordinary aside from that? Maybe something I should know and no one is telling me?"

I saw hesitation flash in her eyes and how she opened her mouth severally to say something without actually saying anything. The door of the room opened and Faustina entered. As soon as she saw me, an uncomfortable look entered her eyes. It was as if she was being trapped and didn’t want to be in the same room as me.

"Your majesty!" she greeted bowing her head slightly "I didn’t think you’ll be here. Can we ask your permission? We need to go for our security clearance and now is the only time we have to do that since the girls are asleep,".

They couldn’t meet my eyes as they talked. That was enough conviction. I didn’t need anyone to tell me that something was going on. Deciding to drop the matter, I nodded and rose to my feet.

"That’s fine, I need to rest a bit too. So, hurry up and come back soon. You know how light these girls can sleep,".

"Okay Your Majesty!" they nodded and bowed while I left the room. When I got to the door of my bedroom, I noticed that the door was open. Wondering who was inside, I entered. I was surprised when I saw Noah sitting on my bed, he had a preoccupied look on his face.

"Noah!" I called out from the door.

He raised his head to look at me. When he saw it was me, he rose to his feet and drew closer. "I realized I was wrong for the way I answered you, so...I’m here to make things right. I hope it’s not late though. It was not my intention... I was out of it...".

"It’s fine," I smiled and went towards him, I understand but you should have been kinder to me, Noah. I was shocked by the way you responded, I thought I had offended you,".

"There’s something I must tell you, Selene," he drew closer to me "And it may come as a shock to you but I must tell you, I don’t want you to hear it elsewhere,".

"You’re scaring me, Noah..." I chuckled "What’s wrong dear?" I tried to reach for him but he took a step backward.

"I slept with Brooke and..." our eyes met and held... I don’t regret it,".
