Selene POV

"Yes, I am," Xavier nodded sending a smile towards me "And it’s all thanks to Selene... she helped me a lot. How are you all doing? The last thing I remembered was discussions centred around Conrad and something about him trying to take over the pack. Has the dust settled now? Are you guys alright?"

"Yes!" Lucius nodded drawing close to him "Everything is fine now. Conrad has been defeated and all his soldiers including the henchmen he had come with are behind bars now waiting for trial but everything is fine. It’s all thanks to you, Alpha... you saved us and we’re truly grateful for that,".

Xavier chuckled "I’m just glad everything worked out in the end," he paused and turned to look at Kragen who had retired to one corner still pounding in the pestle and mortar "Can I go now? I feel fine... if not better than how I’ve been feeling recently,".

"I am not a doctor!" Kragen snapped looking up from what he was doing. His gaze flitted to mine for a second and I mouthed an apology. Scoffing, he took a deep breath and turned to face Xavier again

"I’m trying to brew more herbs and tonics for you. You may feel fine now but it’s only short bouts of energy. Until..." he trailed off with a deep sigh "The treatment I will be giving to you is temporary solutions. I’m sure you’ll be able to figure out the rest yourself,".

"Wait!" Lucius raised his hand as he turned to me eyeing me suspiciously "When Xavier mentioned you helped him, didn’t it mean that you finally mated with him to regain his strength or something like that?"

"Nope!" I told him pointedly "In case you have all forgotten, I am married and Xavier is my ex-husband. All of this is Kragen. He helped resuscitate Xavier as you all can see. I had nothing to do with it. So, you should direct all your thanks to him,".

"So, if Kragen had not been here, you wouldn’t have saved him?" Lucius’s voice cracked as his eyes regarded me with disbelief "What the fuck is wrong with you, Selene? He is not just your mate, he’s the father of your children... would you do this to them because of tiny squabbles or misunderstandings?"

"Tiny squabbles?" I huffed "Cheating, abusing me. making my life miserable and pushing me to my death. Are those tiny squabbles and misunderstandings? Will it kill you all to admit that what he did was wrong? Y’all want me to move and ignore that he didn’t hurt me? Fine! Maybe I’m stretching the issue and going back and forth but that’s because I am yet to find closure and until then...".

"And you think the one you’re married to is any better?" Lucius sneered "You...".

"That’s enough both of you," Xavier growled interrupting us "And Selene is right, she’s under no obligation to save me whether or not she was my mate. She’s now married to someone else and it’ll be unfair to demand that she goes out of her way, to defile her matrimonial bed. I’ll be fine. We’ll look for a way,".

"You will not be fine, Xavier!" Lucius growled in annoyance "If...".

"Lucius!" Xavier called out with a warning tone "I don’t want to hear of the matter anymore. Thank you, Selene, and Kragen. I’m grateful for all your efforts in saving me and I apologize for my Beta’s rudeness,".

Kragen walked up to us, with the tonics he brewed and handed them to Xavier "You’ll be fine for a few days if you take it religiously and your Beta is right. You’ll not be fine. Your system has suffered a lot of loss and your wolf is at its weakest. I advise you not to change into your wolf form for a while until at least it regains its energy. But there’s a way you can about things with Selene without intimacy. It’s the longer route and not as effective but I’ll keep you alive,".

"Oh! Thank you!" Xavier nodded with a smile "We’ll sort things out later and may I ask, how much you charge for the treatment?"

"It’s free," Kragen straightened jamming his hands in his pockets "I’ll do anything for Selene and your girls. So, don’t worry and get better soon because there’s still a lot you must do. If you want your desires to be fulfilled, you should do more taking and stop letting things go just because of past antecedents!".

"Excuse me!" Xavier narrowed his eyes as his brows cocked with confusion "What are you talking about?"

Kragen only smiled and walked out of the room leaving us behind. Immediately, the girls rushed in. As soon as they saw their father, they ran to him, crushing him in a hug while complaining that he scared them. Kurtis murmured something about bringing the car around and left the room. A while later, he returned and said the car was ready for us.

Lucius assisted Xavier to his feet, then balanced both girls on his arms as he carried them out to the waiting vehicle. I stayed back, trying to gather my thoughts together when Kragen’s voice sounded behind me.

"Take it easy on yourself, Selene and you’ve derailed from the path. You’re not doing what you promised to do and I thought to remind you. In case you have forgotten our bargain,".

"It’s very much fresh in my mind, Kragen," I turned to him "It’s just that the journey isn’t as smooth as I thought it’ll be. I’ve fought too many battles and still, I am nowhere close. It’s so frustrating to say the truth but I’ll go more tenaciously now, I promise,".

"Right!" Kragen chuckled dryly "How did you fall in love with Noah? It’s still a mystery to me because when I met you, your heart was closed up from love and...".

"W...What did you say?" I blinked several as I stared at him "Don’t be insane, Kragen... I do not love Noah. I told you, my marriage to him is just a means to an end and it’ll remain like that. Whatever thing I do that made you conclude that it’s a lie,".

"Right!" he chuckled again "Fine! Let’s agree that I am wrong and you’re right but I want you to understand that you cannot always steer things to go the way you want but you can work on the circumstances surrounding what you want and naturally, they’ll align and, in the end, it’ll be win, win for everybody,".

"Did something happen with Noah? You’re sounding ominous and then, Lucius was going to say something about him but was cut short. Am I missing something?" I asked tilting my head curiously,".

"Nothing!" he shook his head "I need to return now, I’m weakening already and hopefully, the next time we meet, we will have made headway in everything that we talked about. Take care of yourself Selene and Xavier too... we still need him,".

I nodded and gave him a curt nod before heading towards the gate. They were all waiting for me. I murmured a thank you to Kurtis as he held the rear door open for me. Within seconds, the car’s engine revved to life and was peeling away down the dirt road leaving the safe house behind in a swirl of dust. I watched the house disappear with a sinking feeling in my gut, wondering what new storm I was about to face and how long Kragen would remain patient with me.

What exactly had happened while I was in hiding? My eyes took in Kurtis’s side profile which was clenched in his usual quiet manner and Lucius’s expression which was always blank... no one was forthcoming about how Conrad was defeated and what happened. Was Noah alright? Was he hurt in the process?

One thing was certain... I wouldn’t get any answers until I returned to Moon Whisper. Setting my jaw, I turned towards Xavier who was beside me. He was sleeping and the girls were in his arms too. They looked so peaceful making me sigh wistfully.

What if I had told Xavier about the pregnancy? Would things have turned out differently? Shaking the thoughts in my head, I slipped into a light sleep. When I woke up, we were at the massive iron gate of the Pack House of Moon Whisper.

When the soldiers on duty saw us, they immediately let me in but something felt off. When we got out of the car, Faustina and Brenna immediately came out. They took the girls, Lucius was already steering Xavier to his quarters and Kurtis murmured something about how he wanted to rest, so it was just me.

I started towards my room, noticing a few passing servants shooting curious glances at me. But I ignored them. Something had happened but all I wanted to do now was to see Noah. Quickly, I showered and changed into a simple, body-con gown that hugged all my edges. I put on light makeup and was generous with my perfume... satisfied with my look, I left my room towards his office.

Without bothering to announce my arrival, I ushered myself in. When I entered his office, I found him seated alone behind his desk, eyes shut in exhaustion. This was strange to me because I know how much of a detailed man Noah was. After everything, he would have had the pack elders and counsel hovering around him.

"Noah!" I called out as I rushed towards him, my heart pumping with pure joy. I didn’t know how much I missed him. These few hours apart from each other made me realize how much of a good man he was to me.

His eyes fluttered open but the look he gave me stole the breath from my lungs and set my heart plummeting into my stomach. His expression was carefully, utterly blank...not even a flicker of acknowledgement or gladness that I was here.

"Noah?" I tried again, more hesitant this time "My love, what...what’s wrong? How are you? I heard what Conrad did, I hope you’re fine?"
