Selene POV

I stiffened and watched as Noah walked towards us. He had a perplexed expression on his face as he approached. My gaze flitted to Kurtis and back to the approaching Noah wondering how much of our conversation he had heard. If he heard half of what Kurtis and I were arguing about, we would have to explain ourselves out of the situation. I drew myself to my full height as he came to stand in front of me.

"You’re here dear," I said with a bright smile while my gaze flitted between Reid who looked dazed and Brooke who had a smirk on her face. Something was wrong. I could feel it but I couldn’t place my finger on it. "I was about to come meet you. How are you doing?" I rambled on.

"What were you talking to Kurtis about?" Noah asked me ignoring my greetings. "What schemes is he planning? You heard that too, Brooke and Reid?" he said behind his shoulders to them.

"Yes Alpha," Brooke nodded "Something about having a grand scheme that even a blind man can see and also him trying to bring her and Xavier together. Something like that,".

Noah’s eyes went back and forth Kurtis and I, I could feel the anger emanating from his pores as he stared at us. Any minute now he would explode. I have to devise a suitable explanation and thank goddess that he didn’t hear the other part of the conversation. That would have been way too difficult to explain.

Just as I opened my mouth to speak, Kurtis pushed me behind him and stood in front of Noah, easily levelling up with him although he was at least 6 inches shorter. "That’s no way to talk to your wife, your majesty. She’s the Queen of this pack and you can’t address her in front of strangers like this,".

"You have no right to dictate to me how to speak to my mate!" Noah exploded closing the space between him and Kurtis "She’s not the only woman in this pack. There are tons of women scattered all over the province and here in Moon Whisper that would gladly jump into bed with you. Why Selene? Why won’t you leave her alone for me?"

Then it dawned on me that Noah had read a different meaning into the conversation or perhaps someone had told him another thing. I felt the fight leave Kurtis as he turned to stare at me, a smirk curving his lips.

"I’ve told you several times Your Majesty and I’ll still repeat it so we would have witnesses. I am not remotely interested in your wife. Even a bit. I respect Selene too much to hold immoral thoughts towards her. I don’t know what you heard or what you were told but honestly, it’s not what you think okay. I respect you far too much to want to do that,".

Then why are you trying to make her go back to Xavier?" Noah growled ferociously grabbing him by his collar. "She’s divorced him and rejected him as her mate. Why are you so bent on joining them together?"

"Noah please!" I walked towards both men and gently placed an arm on Noah, "Don’t do this, okay? No one is taking you away from me. I am your mate and your wife," I said quietly.

His gaze left Kurtis for a minute as they turned to me, pinning me with disgust "Really?" he scoffed "Then what was he doing in your bedroom at this time of the night? Everyone is settled preparing for the night and he’s slipping out of your bedroom. What were you doing with him, answer me now?"

My eyes widened in confusion at his words. "I don’t understand dear," I stuttered "Kurtis just came here a while ago to inform me of something. Besides, this is the girls’ bedroom and not mine. Nothing is going on between me and Kurtis. I don’t know what you heard but you’ve been deceived. Someone is trying to come in between us,".

"So, it’s all a coincidence that he’s here now?" His hands left Kurtis’s collar as he turned to face me. "Care to explain what he’s doing here and I want the truth by the way,".

I turned pleading eyes to Kurtis who shook his head before he turned to Noah "Xavier is missing," he announced looking at Noah steadily. "He was supposed to go check on our security post along the water ridge but we lost connection to him and the men there. We’ve tried to locate them but the drones we sent came back with nothing. They’re not there and there’s no sign of life either,".

Noah’s brows furrowed at the announcement as he stared at both of us "So, why did you come to my wife? Do you expect her to go out and look for him?"

"He’s your nephew, your majesty before anything else. The least you can show is some sympathy," Reid spoke up for the first time "Has search parties been sent at least to look for him?" he directed his question to Kurtis.

"We cannot afford to send out our men without confirming his location at first. That is what we’re trying to do. The skies are already changing, it’s dangerous out there. So, until we locate him, then we would send search parties to get them. That was why I came to Selene to see if she could feel him through their mate bond and probably communicate with him so we could get where he is,".

"What makes you think she’d be able to do that?" Noah huffed "She already broke off their bond. She rejected him and severed every tie to him. Now, we bear each other’s mark. So, what are you talking about? I think you’re mistaken,".

"Not even in the slightest, your majesty," Kurtis chuckled "Everyone knows that the mate bond between fated mates does not get severed even in death. True, you might find someone else, but it’ll always be there. A wolf can only be fated to one mate all their lives. I thought it was common knowledge,".

My heart broke as I saw the confusion on Noah’s face as he turned to me. "Is it true?" he muttered; I could tell he was hoping it was a lie. "Can you still feel him? Do you still communicate with him? How long has all this been going on behind my back,".

"Nothing’s been going on, Your Majesty," Kurtis sighed "Your wife has been faithful to you but right now, we need her to help us locate where Xavier is and the father of her kids. Please, let’s not complicate things further than they already are. I assure you that this will not change anything. All we did is for...".

"This would not change anything!" Noah flew into a rage as he grabbed Kurtis again, "Do you know what I had to go through just to make her my wife? To think that she cannot belong to me fully because of some stupid bond? NO!" he yelled and let Kurtis go "I forbid you to communicate with him. You have a lot of devices at your disposal, use them to find, Xavier!"

"We have, your majesty," Kurtis continued without relenting "If you’re being truthful to yourself, you should know from the very first day you decided to take her that you’d always be the substitute mate. I hate to be blunt but you know that’s the truth. So, before the skies get any darker, let’s look for him,".

"And I say I forbid it," tears pooled in his eyes as he grabbed my hand "You wouldn’t do that to me, Selene, right? Communicating with an ex... you know that’s cheating?"

"I am aware," I nodded. My heart was palpitating with tension inside me "But something would happen to him if I don’t do anything about it. If it were a normal day... I wouldn’t have agreed because we would eventually get him but you know what today is and your sister would never forgive you if anything happens to him,".

"So..." his voice shook "You would choose him over me again like always?"

"That’s not true, baby," I tried to reach for his hand which he had removed from mine but he took a step backwards as his eyes burned with hurt "You’re not an option for me, Noah. I just have to do this at least for the girls and your sister and...".

"When will you ever do what I want?" he cried stopping me mid-sentence "When will you ever choose me? You choose everyone but me. You do what they say but you never pay attention to my feelings. I am still grabbling with making you mine and you’re still going back and forth with your ex. Do you know how it makes me feel each time? It makes me feel incapacitated like shit warmed over. And the girls, you know I love them so much but you’ve succeeded in putting a divide between us and now you want me to overlook this too,".

"Noah.... please," I trailed off unable to say anything.

"You know what, Selene," he gave me a small smile "I’m done. I think you’re an adult who knows between right and wrong. I will no longer force you to do what I know is the right thing. Go ahead and do whatever pleases you. It doesn’t matter anyway because, in the end, my opinion doesn’t matter and will not matter,".

"Noah please!" I begged, "It’s just to save him nothing more. I promise you,".

"Anyways, I came because I wanted to introduce your new beta to you..." he beckoned to Brooke who came forward, a wide grin on her face "Since you’re still hesitant about looking for one, I decided it’ll be best to appoint one for you and with the office of the Luna operating now, you’ll need all the help you can get. We’ll make an official announcement to the pack tomorrow. I just wanted you to know. I hope you can get along with her and this would be a good way to convince the elders to officially recognize the office of the Luna,".
