Chapter 112: The pack’s been buzzing...

Noah POV

It was spring – and the garden was a riot of vibrant colours of flowers blooming and the air was filled with floral scents that would put anyone in a good mood but I barely noticed any of it. My mind was whirling endlessly with the memory of the last conversation I had with Selene and the more I think about it, the more an uneasy feeling kept knotting in my stomach.

The fact that both her and Kurtis’s testimony was different should have told me everything I needed to know. Why hadn’t she trusted me with the full truth? I allowed her to be with her ex-husband while we were engaged, isn’t that enough reason for her to trust me at least? Doesn’t it prove beyond doubt that I can do anything for her? I know she didn’t feel the same way as me and may love Xavier more than she did me but where does Kurtis come in?

What was she hiding? And why was she trying to protect him? A nagging suspicion kept linking everything to Kurtis and Xavier. Something was going on... something that would shake our world and I had a feeling that Kurtis was the sole orchestrator and he had someone helping him. Because, it was strange that anyone would suddenly want to turn against the moon goddess.

The first day Xavier had come to Moon Whisper, he had told me without mincing words that his pack only began to prosper when they abolished every trace of the moon religion and it was Kurtis who had introduced it to him no doubt. There should be a motive for it... people who didn’t believe in the powers of the universe become the most powerful people mentally – I agree with that because I know how believing in deities could impair someone mentally but what was Kurtis’s real intent and why did he start his so-called reform with Xavier?

He could have chosen other Alphas and convinced them into doing what he wanted them to do just like he did to Xavier and funny enough, he wasn’t attempting to convert them. Nothing was found about Kurtis except the things he had already told me and confessed. At least, that was what the research had shown.

Kurtis was a mysterious man and everything he did was so calculative. I only had an unsettling feeling about him. Until I satisfy it, I will forever be uneasy about everything happening.

"Your majesty!" Someone suddenly interrupted my thoughts making me look up sharply. When I did, it was one of the Alpha that had come for the quarterly meeting. I recognized him immediately as the Alpha, which had been the quietest on the day we were having that meeting, and I had taken a curious interest in him. Although I made plans to interact with him later on, I just haven’t had the chance.

"I apologize for startling you," he said quietly bowing his head "If now is a bad time, I will go and come back later,".

"You’re already here," I replied "You might as well stay,". I was trying to recall his name but my memory was falling short. "Could you remind me of your name again, I have forgotten?"

"My name is Jared – Alpha to the Blue Moon Pack in the Easter region," he replied with a good-natured smile "I hope you do not forget it again but I am confident that after today, the name will be embedded in the table of your heart,".

I arched my brow at him wondering what he was driving at. Whatever it was, I wasn’t going to get involved directly. I knew he had come here to ask for a favour that he felt only I could do, so I could only act as if I didn’t know that.

"Your majesty! I’ve been waiting for your invitation for some days now. I noticed you took a curious liking to me and no I wasn’t told by anyone I just had the premonition that you would want to see me and talk with me eventually but I grew impatient and tired of waiting, I dare say. Besides, since we arrived here against our will, we’ve been abandoned. There’s no notice to tell us when the meeting will be held, nothing has been said. Alpha Xavier barely has time for us and..." he met my gaze and held "I’m tired!"

I studied him for a while, still wondering where all of this was going. "Alpha," I started slowly "I understand your frustrations but it’s not in my place to make this kind of decision. I know it’s difficult but if you have problems, you should be relating it to Alpha Xavier and not me. Besides, I hope you’re not expecting me to do something about it. There are protocols to follow around here and I am not one to skip those steps,".

"I know your majesty," He nodded "But ...".

"There are no buts, Jared!" I said coldly "You shouldn’t be in my presence like this unless I ask for you. This is disrespect but I am going to let it slide and that’s because as you mentioned earlier, I was curious about you but that doesn’t give you to leverage to take advantage of it and come before me just like that,".

"I am sorry, your majesty!" he bowed "I was just trying to talk to you. There’s something I must report to you urgently,".

I tried not to roll my eyes as I stared at him. "Do you think I am your personal messenger or that you can come to me as you like and expect me not to do anything you ask me to? If you have anything to report to me, I suggest you go through my Beta. This conversation is over. You may leave,".

He threw himself on the ground and bowed his head "I’m sorry, your majesty but I am going to disobey you this once and it’s because I want to prove my loyalty. None of the other Alphas regards me as anything. They feel I don’t deserve to be an Alpha because unlike them, I fought my way to the throne but I want to change that narrative. I will no longer be the bare minimum. Please... listen to me just once and if you do not approve, then I promise will never come this way again,".

"Thank you!" he said with enthusiasm and bowed his head before raising himself to his feet. "It’s about Conrad, your majesty. First of all, I should warn you that the information I am about to share now may seem fake or unreal but I can prove that every one of them is the truth and nothing but it and it is a way to win against him, should he try to Lord himself over you and the rest of the Kings,".

My heart thumped wildly as I stared at him wondering what he wanted to tell me about Conrad. "Okay," I nodded "I am listening,".

The revelation turned out to be one of the most shocking things I’ve ever heard but it also came with a condition. If I used the information, then I would have to promise to fulfil whatever wish Jared had. That was another trap.

Although he didn’t say what he wanted, I knew it would be chaotic if I accepted blindly to do whatever he wanted. I was so lost in my troubled thoughts that I didn’t hear footsteps approaching behind me. Suddenly, a pair of slender arms encircled my waist from behind and a warm body pressed against my back.

I tensed instantly at the intimate contact and a familiar scent wafted up my nostrils. Rio, my wolf reacted instantly with delight... it was only Brooke that could make him feel that way. Even my mate Selene didn’t excite him as much.

"Brooke!" I called out alarmed as I shrugged her off my back turning to face her. My breath caught in my throat as I took in her appearance. She wasn’t wearing a bra beneath the skimpy playsuit that did nothing to conceal her curves. Her large nipples peaked in front of her chest reminding me of how good and juicy they used to feel in my mouth whenever I suckled on them.

I could see every contour of her body and for a second, thoughts of her moulding them against me, surged an arousal through me before I could tamp it down. Disgusted by the tent forming at the lower part of my body, I took some steps backwards, putting some safe distance between us.

"Brooke, what are you doing here? I bit out, fighting to keep my tone even and to stop myself from staring at her chest.

She blinked at me with wide, innocent eyes as if she had no idea of the effect she’d just had on me. "I just came to see you, babe. It’s been a while," she sighed dramatically. "To think that we’re in the same place at the same time and I cannot see you whenever I want. Thankfully, Reid is not on duty or your numerous security details who will always stop me from coming to see you,". She ran her tongue along her lower lip before pulling it into a pout.

"Also, the pack’s been buzzing since last night, do we have visitors? What’s going on?" she added again.
