Selene POV

My breath caught in my throat as Noah’s question hung heavy in the air between us. I suddenly felt hot... it was as if the room was closing in on me, shaking my head to fight the sudden dizziness I felt I looked up to him trying to read his blank expression.

"And don’t bother to lie to me again, Selene. Just tell me the truth, no matter how difficult and heavy it may seem on your tongue. So, I’ll ask again. You said the moon priestess died a month before we found you and there was no way you could have taken care of two babies giving your weak state. The question is, who helped you? Is that supposed to be something to mull over? It’s a straightaway reply,"

He was right. The question was simple and the answer should be equally simple but I had to be careful with my reply. I didn’t know what prompted him to ask me that question suddenly, the very reason why I should be more careful than ever.

Noah’s searching gaze bored into me, seeking... what? The complete truth? Or someone who he can trust. A thousand and one responses flitted through my mind as I pondered on the best way to answer him. I could tell him plain facts or dance around the truth, hoping he would get tired and ask me to leave.

I took a deep breath as my eyes flicked the length of his tall, imposing figure "After the priestess died," I began carefully "It was... difficult at first. I was just a weak wolf and I had children to cater for and I was all alone,". I willed my voice to tremble, hoping the emotional card will work. "Later, I found out that the priestess had made arrangements. There was another, you see...".

Noah’s piercing stare bore into me "Another what? We don’t have all day, Selene... speak already," he urged.

I swallowed hard. "Another priestess. She was a novice kind of and had worked as an apprentice to the late Moon goddess. So, she took me in and started taking care of me,".

A low, rumbling growl escaped Noah’s chest. "You expect me to believe that? Deep in the heart of a forest; you expect to believe that some naïve moon priestess was willing to take care of you and your babies? C’mon on Selene..." he sighed running a hand through his already tousled hair "Can you please stop lying to me? Please...".

I had come to Moon Whisper around the time Noah had killed his gamma. Everyone lived in fear and avoided him because according to the rumors, they didn’t believe he would do that to his gamma. They said he waited for four years, expecting the gamma to change and stop embezzling Pack money but he overplayed Noah’s ignorance and lingering kindness.

One of the mornings, he just ordered the Gamma to come before his presence and without preamble, had someone read out his crimes to him then he was killed. Of course, he was the kindest King in the region, loved his pack so much that he’ll do anything to make sure that they’re fine and treated them like family but he was still ruthless.

His gaze lingered on me for a few seconds before he shook his head and went to his desk. "You can go," he said quietly "I have no more questions for you,".

"But why were you asking me those questions suddenly," I pursued pushing closer to his desk "You’ve never asked me that kind of question, so, I’m just curious. Did something happen? Did you hear something?"

"I need to work now, Selene," he said quietly "Go and relate to the men everything we’ve discussed so far and have them implement it. I’ll join up soon," He gave me a dismissive gaze and then turned back to the file he had been looking at.

I stood there in front of him, at a loss for words. Never has Noah dismissed me, not even when I was not his Luna. I would stay until the end of the conversation and then leave on my own accord. What was happening? Exhaling, I gave him a curt bow and headed out of the office. I had to go and look for Xavier and Kurtis but before then, I needed to check on the girls.

Some moments later, I arrived at the girl’s bedroom and it seemed they were playing with their nannies. They looked up at me, sparing me a glance. "Mommy, you’re here," Vina beamed with a smile "And just in time too. Daddy, got us a lot of toys to play with and said we shouldn’t leave our room until he comes for us or you,".

"He said that?" I turned to Brenna and Faustina the girls nanny seeking for an explanation.

"Yes, your majesty," they both nodded "He said that no matter what that the girls should stay indoor today and made us bring in food from the kitchen and snacks so we don’t have to go outside. He also changed the password and only specific person can access the room,".

"I see," I nodded, Xavier wasn’t taking chances. "Alright then, Mommy has a lot of things to do. Will you guys be okay on your own? Do you need my help with anything? Before I go?"

"No!" the girls chorused with smiles on their faces. These past few days that Xavier has been around, I noticed they were always smiling and happy. I nodded and excused myself. As soon as I opened the door, I saw Kurtis standing, in front of the door, waiting for me.

"A word, Luna?" He said quietly and without waiting for me to respond, he turned on his heels and started walking. Together, we walked outside the pack house and into the garden. As soon as we were alone from prying eyes and ears, he stopped and turned to me.

"How are you today?" he asked.

"Cut to the chase, Kurtis," I rolled my eyes "What do you want? Why did you want to see me?"

"Why didn’t you tell, Noah the truth? How hard could that have been especially since he had his suspicions. Obviously, I underestimated him by thinking he was a lover boy and would be blind to a lot of his partner’s flaw but obviously, he’s not. He knows we’ve met each other prior to everything and he also knows that I took care of you when my mother died,".

"What!" My face turned white "H-How did he know? Did you tell him? There’s no way on earth that he would know except you told him. It’s not possible," I argued.

"Do you know what he said the me the day he was questioning me regarding that. He said he noticed that me and you are familiar to each other. Right from that night that you and him and Xavier with the girls had come to stay in our camp and asked how we know each other. I was left in a pickle. There was no way I could have denied it, so I told him the truth. It was difficult to lie to him like that,".

"Then why didn’t you say something?" I fired pacing the room, trying to come up with a solution "And here I was trying to save your ass so he won’t be suspicious but you didn’t bother to tell me of this one thing. How cruel can you be, Kurtis? Now I feel like a liar,".

"Well, I’m not sure of that. He asked to see me a moment ago and asked me why our stories are not correlating. I just told him that I delayed some days before coming to take care of you. I don’t know if he believed my explanations but if he should ask you again, it’s best you come clean,".

I didn’t need anyone to tell me that. "By the way," I changed the topic, "I was coming to look for you. He agreed that we would accept the Kings coming and said you and your men would be in charge of welcoming the guests and checking them. He also said that only a ...".

"Yeah," Kurtis nodded interrupting me "I’ll send 10 of my best men now so you can start with sorting their lodgings. We agreed that each King is entitled to 7 extra persons and also, we’d be doing a thorough search,".

"Okay," I nodded "What about Conrad?" I asked "I need to inform him of the latest development,".

"He should still be at the visitors waiting room. Whatever you’re doing make sure you’re careful with him. There’s something off about him that I can’t place my finger on. Reid is still with him and they’re talking. I don’t want to conclude but I think he charmed Reid. So, he might want to try that with you too,".

"Don’t worry," my lips pressed into an amused smile "I know how to handle people like Conrad,".
