Chapter 106: After the moon priestess died...

Selene POV

My heart surged with happiness at that question. It was what I wanted all the while. I sank deeper into his arms, feeling his strong heart beating against mine. I needed to captivate Noah and make him do all of my bidding without needing to consult the men. That’s the only way it would work. I also didn’t want to appear too eager.

Clearing my throat, I murmured "I don’t think I am in the position to give you a piece of advice, your majesty. I don’t have a lot of experience in things like this. Of course, the ultimate decision falls to you dear, but I don’t think my counsel will be as effective as your Beta’s or any of the pack elders,".

"You’re my mate, Selene," Noah sighed "I’ll trust your counsel more than anyone’s. everyone is trying to take something from me. Some my riches, some my connections and others my position but you’re the only one around here that wants nothing from me. So, please, what do you suggest I do? I promise I’ll do it no matter how foolish it is,".

I pushed away from him and reached for both of his hands holding in gaze with every ounce of conviction and loyalty I could muster to surface. I was going to give him advice alright but I wanted it to be as sound and free of any ulterior motive that could make him question his trust in me.

"How about you do exactly what he wants," I started. "I think Conrad is trying to make you look bad in the eyes of all those kings. Imagine they arrive here and are asked to turn back that they’re not going to be admitted. All Conrad needs to do at that moment is to sell a negative perception and boom, they’d all start to hate you without bothering to find out what truly happened. Also, this could be an opportunity to finally uncover what he’s up to. At the banquet, you could stake out people at different locations to put an eye on him. Record who he’s missing or what he’s up to. If possible, hire a lip translator,".

His nostrils flared slightly as his gaze took on a contemplative look as he weighed my words. After a while, his shoulders heaved with a resigned sigh.

"Fine! I’ll do as you have advice. I’ll just make sure there’s a thorough check at the borders and a limited number of people that can come in with each king. That’s the best I can do. Do you think the banquet will eat deep into our pockets?" he asked.

"I don’t think so," I gave him a reassuring smile "We have a lot of investment but outside and within the pack and our exports are doing so well. It’ll take a chunk, considering we’ve been hosting Xavier and his Alphas but we would make it back in less than 84 hours and just to make you feel at ease, I think this is the best time to reinstate the office of the Luna. You’d be so busy trying to make sure everything goes well with the kings and security. You’d need someone who can be on the lookout for you and see through each loophole. Plus, I happen to have the time on my hands,".

"True," he nodded "I will do that before the day ends. I shall also strive to play the best host to everyone coming in too. I don’t know what Conrad has planned but I’m going to take your advice and make sure I am in a good place with all the kings,". One side of his mouth twisted into a humourless smirk "This will also be a good opportunity to seek out a lot of nuisances and end pack business relationships,".

I nodded, agreeing with him. But I was also joyful that he was going to finally make my dreams come through. Even though it was not finalized yet and he could change his mind in the end, I just have to make sure he doesn’t.

"Good baby," I traced a hand on his wide chest "We could also share the duties. Let Kurtis start making arrangements for the arrival of the guests. His men are smarter and more intimidating so, it will be better if we station them at the entrance of our territory. I’m going to mobilize the maids and also requests he gives us at least ten of his men to help the ladies make necessary arrangements for their accommodations and hospitality,".

"How about Xavier?" he asked quietly.

"Let him work alongside you. I don’t know what’s wrong with Reid, so for now, just do whatever needs to be done with Xavier. It’s much easier like that. I don’t want us to be in close contact anymore especially since the Kings would be here. Closeness to him might spark rumours and we don’t need that, especially not now,".

His eyes studied me intensely. As if they were searching for the truth. I shifted uncomfortably waiting for him to say something or take his gaze off me but the moments stretched by and he was still staring at me with as much intensity as ever.

"Is there...something else you wish to discuss, my love?" I asked quietly after the heavy stretch of silence.

He seemed to rouse himself from his contemplations and then shook his head letting out a gust of air "No, I...apologize for drifting too much. I was just lost in thought. By the way, Selene," he held my shoulders, invariably forcing me to stare at him as his tone took on a more decisive tone "Are you certain that this will work out in the end? Do you believe it would? And that this is the best part? You know the lives of everyone would be on the line here,".

He was getting sceptical. Typical Noah! He always loved to check and double-check, even triple-check things that had to do with people. He was like that and I knew he wanted me to tell him if I had any conversation with Conrad excluding the ones, I had shared with all of them for a moment I considered telling him about the purse but I shook my head against it.

"Yes," I nodded holding his gaze "I know how much you care about the people and me and the girls. So, you don’t have to worry,".

"I’m not worried about you and the girls, Selene... do you know what the funniest thing is?’ he chuckled sadly "Everyone knows that you’re not my weakness, especially at this point. There’s Xavier, Lucius and even Kurtis to protect you from any harm. They might even lay down their lives for you like Xavier’s Beta but the people have just me. They’re my weakness. If anything, I should make sure they’re well protected,".

"What are you talking about?" I asked watching him silently.

"I’m going to prepare for the worse, Selene. I’ll ready our war chest. I don’t want to be cut by surprise, just in case something goes wrong,".

Then it dawned on me "You don’t trust me?" I asked staring at him with my eyes wide open. "Wow! You do not trust me,".

"Maybe," He nodded "And I’m not apologetic about it. Yes, I am smitten by you but it doesn’t cloud my sense of judgement. I’m going to reinstate the Office of the Luna only for the duration that we have our guests but after that, it’ll be closed and then a closer introspection would be given to it before I make my decision,".

"Fine!" I shrugged "I have nothing to hide, Noah. My life has been bared to you right from the very first day you met me and I’ve served you without reservations. You trusted me with the finance of your pack... I could have run away with the money or squandered it but you know I didn’t take a penny that I didn’t deserve,".

"Maybe money is not a problem for you, Selene," he said quietly. "Perhaps it wasn’t the end goal for you that’s why you didn’t take it but now that I think of it, the forest where I picked you, was a day’s at most two days journey from Moon Whisper but you never bothered to go back and I know you might say you were already escaping and then you wanted to stay away from Xavier completely... but the night we picked you up, your babies were dressed in the best of dresses. Even the basket was filled with new clothes and I remember you telling me that the Moon priestess that was taking care of you had died,".

My heart pounded in my chest at his words. I didn’t know if this was a test or an attempt to club me into making a confession I didn’t want to. But I maintained my innocent expression and didn’t let my eyes leave his gaze for once.

"Correct," I nodded "The babies’ clothes were all a gift from her and before that, I had a lot of money from all the salary I was paid as a Luna. So, I always give her a large sum whenever she goes to the market,".

"Yeah," he nodded "And you also told me she died one month before we stumbled into you and given your condition then, you couldn’t have lasted more than a day except for someone’s help. So, who was helping you?"

"I don’t understand," I shifted uncomfortably trying to fight the sudden nausea that overwhelmed me "What are you talking about?"

"Did someone help you or not after the moon priestess died?"
