Tale of the Red Dragon Without Dragon’s Might -
Chapter 273 - 269: Devoted Mother and Filial Daughter
Chapter 273: Chapter 269: Devoted Mother and Filial Daughter
Like Salovis, Anglistra didn’t like to appear in human form. She rarely showed herself in that shape, maybe just a few people in the past one or two hundred years had seen her as a human, and among those few, her daughter was undoubtedly one of them.
Despite not having met for so many years, Salovis still recognized Anglistra at a glance, her whole body instantly tensed. She cautiously greeted, "Mother."
"It’s a miracle you still remember me as your mother." Anglistra nodded with a faint smile.
"Of course!" Salovis, knowing how to adapt to circumstances, immediately threw her arms around Anglistra’s slender waist and flattered her, "Mother is always my mother. Even after a thousand years, ten thousand years, I would never forget."
Anglistra, noncommittal, rubbed Salovis’s head, gently stroking her soft, shoulder-length hair. She had the air of a mother happy to be reunited with her daughter after a long parting, saying, "I just heard you mention having hundreds of thousands of gold coins."
"Mother, I’ve missed you so much, missed you to death." Salovis indeed missed her mother terribly, so much so that she couldn’t hear anything else. She rested her head against Anglistra’s chest, nuzzling, "Why did you come to Watchtower Port?"
Anglistra let out a cold laugh, pushed Salovis away abruptly, pinned her head down, and said again, "I just heard you say you have hundreds of thousands of gold coins."
Salovis’s expression didn’t change. She clapped her hands and said, "Look at me. Do I look like someone who has hundreds of thousands of gold coins?"
Anglistra scrutinized Salovis closely, crossing her arms with a nod. "No, you don’t. Right... how could you possibly have hundreds of thousands of gold coins? Even I don’t have hundreds of thousands of gold coins..."
Salovis had just breathed a sigh of relief when she heard Anglistra’s next words: "Even if you don’t have hundreds of thousands, you must have at least a few tens of thousands, don’t you?"
"Don’t try to fool me. You can’t deceive me." Anglistra fixed her eyes on her daughter and suddenly shouted, "Stop looking around. Look into my eyes."
Salovis gave in. She lowered her head and said, "A few tens of thousands... I do have a few tens of thousands of coins."
"Lend me some." Anglistra made no pretense. This was the reason she’d traveled thousands of miles to Watchtower Port. "I’m not taking it for nothing. When I start my own business and make money, I’ll pay you back tenfold... no, fivefold. No, let’s say threefold. Actually, twofold is already quite generous."
Salovis dared not speak, thinking to herself: What kind of Red Dragon snatches money and doesn’t keep it hidden but invests it instead? And not just invest it — she has to guarantee profits, not losses. And if things don’t go well, she’ll beat up her partners, causing the venture to fail and losing everything... I won’t even dream of a twofold return. If I can just get my money back, it’ll already be a blessing.
This is what’s called cutting flesh and feeling the pain. Salovis truly experienced it today and said, "Consider one thousand gold coins my filial tribute, Mother."
"One thousand isn’t enough. Five thousand. Lend me five thousand, and I’ll leave right now. I can swear on His Majesty’s name." Anglistra was clearly more adept at negotiation. "If you can spare one thousand coins as a tribute to me, then I now believe you really do have hundreds of thousands of coins lying around."
"No! I absolutely don’t have hundreds of thousands of coins!" Salovis jumped to her feet. "I can swear by His Majesty’s name too."
"One thousand gold coins definitely isn’t enough." Anglistra said, "I raised you with untold hardships... and you dare offer me just one thousand coins?"
I don’t dare ask for much, and yet you dare to ask so shamelessly. Even for a Red Dragon, isn’t it absurd for a mother to rob money from her daughter? ...Oh well, if it’s a Red Dragon, perhaps anything is possible. Salovis wanted to resist, but years of childhood education had deeply ingrained her mother’s overpowering presence in her mind.
"You’re still young. Don’t let bad men deceive you." Anglistra was certain Salovis had so much money only because she had subordinated herself to some Lord of Giant Dragon... Her daughter might not have the sharpest mind, but her striking beauty, inherited from Anglistra, could easily captivate male dragons. Otherwise, on what basis could a mere teenage Red Dragon amass such wealth?
"You can’t possibly manage so much money well. Better entrust it to me for safekeeping." Anglistra said, "Men who deceive you might turn their backs after taking advantage of you and try to snatch your money... but your mother is extraordinarily powerful."
Most Lords of Giant Dragon are indeed formidable, but not all of them are.
The essence of a Lord of Giant Dragon lies in integrating into the lives of lower races, ruling a kingdom, shaping their domain based on their own worldview.
Lords of Giant Dragon differ from ordinary dragons in several ways. Ordinary dragons don’t occupy territories they can’t personally manage, hoping to deal with as few issues as possible. They have no interest in the internal power struggles of other ranks — for instance, if there’s a goblin tribe in their territory, they’ll only interact with the goblin leader, ignoring the tribe’s internal organizational structure.
When Salovis heard Anglistra’s comments, she froze for a moment before saying, "What bad man?"
"That Lord of Giant Dragon — the one called Cliff Sword or something," Anglistra said. "Aren’t you following him now? Does he even know how to use a sword? A sword-wielding Red Dragon is already strange enough."
Right, Leon. He doesn’t get along with Mother.
Suddenly, Salovis snapped back to her senses, her thoughts firing up. She licked her lips and said, "Mother, do you still remember Leon?"
"Leon? Your brother?" Anglistra thought for a moment. "Why are you suddenly bringing him up? Do you know where he is now?"
"Yes, I know where he is now. And I also know that he’s loaded, filthy rich," Salovis said.
"How did he get filthy rich?" Anglistra couldn’t believe that the baby dragon who had always been peculiar could possibly thrive beyond mere survival.
"Don’t worry about why he’s so rich," Salovis said. "Wasn’t he the one who owed you a million gold coins over that Edwin matter?"
"Hmm..." Anglistra mused. "What exactly are you trying to say?"
"You should go find him. At this point, he might even be able to repay that million," Salovis said.
"Are you joking..." Anglistra replied. "A million? A mere ancient Red Dragon might take centuries to accumulate that sum. He’s just a teenage dragon."
Salovis gritted her teeth and said, "Mother, you might not know this, but the dragon ruling Watchtower Port as its Lord of Giant Dragon is Leon himself."
Anglistra had seen Leon’s weakness firsthand. In her mind, he would always be weak, and she couldn’t believe he had become a Lord of Giant Dragon. She tilted her head and eyed her daughter skeptically, "Do you think I’ll believe you?"
"I heard that dragon killed an adult Red Dragon and seized a pirate city." After arriving at Watchtower Port, Anglistra had heard all sorts of things. "How could a teenage Red Dragon accomplish such feats?"
"I swear," Salovis said, "on His Majesty’s name."
Anglistra was skeptical but didn’t rule it out.
"There are rumors about him killing an adult Red Dragon, but I’ve never seen it myself. Whether he raided a pirate city or not, who knows if it’s just hearsay... Look into my eyes; I promise I’m not lying," Salovis said. "In any case, he’s your son, and you are his mother."
Salovis wasn’t lacking brains; she just didn’t use them often. But now, she was turning them on for once, speaking passionately enough to make Anglistra nod repeatedly.
"He’s so young, ruling an entire Watchtower Port must be incredibly tough. I need to help him."
"He owes me a million gold coins. Debt repayment is a sacred duty."
"Lead the way."
