Tale of the Red Dragon Without Dragon’s Might -
Chapter 271 - 267: Where is the Daughter?
Chapter 271: Chapter 267: Where is the Daughter?
Salovis thought their mother had a temper so explosive that it could erupt at the slightest provocation. Coincidentally, Leon shared the same opinion.
Salovis felt that their Mother Dragon might end up getting herself slaughtered someday. Obviously, this was just an emotional outburst; their mother-daughter relationship wasn’t exactly harmonious.
It’s easy to understand why. With that kind of volatile temper, the Mother Dragon still managed to grow up, lay a clutch of eggs, and earn herself the nickname "Lady Molten Throat." She clearly had some skills and strength—though even so, she couldn’t take control of a place like Grey Mountain Town, despite its fierce and resilient populace.
So, what’s her current situation?
The siblings had no clue that she was occupying a deep hall in a Dwarf stronghold, where she was currently meeting with a delegation from the Githyanki.
Ordinarily, it’s rare for a Githyanki delegation to seek out a mature Red Dragon, as mature Red Dragons seldom cooperate with Githyanki. This meeting, however, had been initiated by the Mother Dragon herself.
"Anglistra, I’m truly delighted to receive your invitation. I didn’t expect you’d still remember me." The leader of the Githyanki delegation was a tall Githyanki woman, who had once been Anglistra’s partner.
Anglistra’s narrow, vertical pupils fixed on the Githyanki woman as she slightly parted her jaws, exposing sharp teeth. She said, "Adya, long time no see. Honestly, it’s a relief to find you didn’t die."
"Thanks," Adya replied. "I’m glad too."
Anglistra’s rare smile flashed briefly as she said, "I’ve since grown from being a teenage dragon to a mature Red Dragon, now a mother of two. My children are teenage dragons themselves now, while you, you still look exactly the same as before."
"Because residents of the Star Realm don’t age," Adya shrugged, thinking to herself how she’d maintained the same appearance for over a century.
"But after all these years, you’re still so weak. At this point, I could crush you with a single slap," Anglistra remarked bluntly, her gaze lingering on Adya’s arm. "Your arm looks injured—it doesn’t seem like it’s going to heal anytime soon, does it?"
"A minor accident... Let’s not talk about that," Adya waved dismissively. "Why did you call for us today?"
Of course, Anglistra wouldn’t admit she’d encountered a minor mishap, leading to her current penniless state. She hesitated, wondering whether she should, as a mature Red Dragon, join the Githyanki raiding crew... Ah, failed ventures mean you have to take jobs to earn money back before considering entrepreneurship again.
Anglistra understood all too well that if she expressed her willingness, the Githyanki would undoubtedly welcome her warmly. However, she couldn’t take the initiative—it would be too humiliating. After all, no mature Red Dragon would fraternize with the Githyanki.
Her plan was to maneuver the Githyanki into making the offer themselves, then feign reluctance before finally accepting after repeated invitations—thus saving her pride.
Anglistra pondered for a minute about how best to approach the topic, then said, "You know I’ve always been a responsible mother... My daughter, Salovis, works for your people now. She’s always been a handful. I hope she hasn’t been causing you any trouble?"
"Salovis?" Adya thought for a moment before responding, "She’s doing quite well. Biska gives her high praise. However, she left—she no longer works for us."
Red Dragons can work for the Githyanki, but they can also refuse. They act on their own whims and can quit at any time. After all, it’s a partnership, not an obligation, and Red Dragons hold higher status than the Githyanki.
"Why did she leave?" Anglistra asked curiously. As a mother, she figured she should at least care about her daughter, "When did she leave?"
Adya furrowed her brow slightly, thinking before replying, "It’s been several years now, I believe. I wasn’t her knight—I only know so much."
"I know my daughter. If she left, it must have been for some benefit," Anglistra asserted confidently. A mother knows her child best.
"I heard she joined forces with a powerful Lord of Giant Dragons," Adya said.
"A Lord of Giant Dragons?" Anglistra repeated, musing aloud. "What kind of dragon is this Lord? Even if it’s a Lord of Giant Dragons, if it’s not a Red Dragon, that’s still embarrassing."
"It’s a Red Dragon Giant Dragon Lord," Adya replied.
"A Red Dragon becoming a Lord of Giant Dragons?" Anglistra was baffled. As a Red Dragon herself, she knew that Red Dragons typically detest sharing power, making it much less likely for them to become Lords of Giant Dragons compared to other dragons.
"Tell me about this Red Dragon. Is he very strong?" Anglistra asked.
Red Dragons possess a fierce territorial instinct and an isolationist mindset, yet they yearn to exert influence over the events of a larger world, often using lesser creatures as spies, messengers, and informants. They have a particular interest in the affairs of other Red Dragons.
"Honestly, I’m not too sure myself," Adya admitted. "Details about that Giant Dragon Lord are mainly handled by Captain Caslak Duens. He doesn’t seem willing to talk about that Giant Dragon Lord... Rumor has it, he and his partner challenged him once and lost quite embarrassingly."
"Makes sense," Anglistra said matter-of-factly. "A Giant Dragon Lord is at least a mature Red Dragon. A mature Red Dragon isn’t someone they can go up against... Should I commend his courage or his foolishness?"
Anglistra continued asking about the Giant Dragon Lord.
"Are you thinking of joining that Giant Dragon Lord?" Adya asked curiously.
"Certainly not," Anglistra replied.
She had no intention of affiliating herself with any Giant Dragon Lord. If she wanted, despite having no followers at present, she could easily become a Giant Dragon Lord herself. She simply refused to share her silver hoard with anyone else—thus, she hadn’t taken up the mantle.
"So why did you call me here? Was it really just to check on your daughter?" Adya asked.
"Yes, just to check on my daughter," Anglistra replied.
"You summoned us all the way here just for that?" Adya’s expression betrayed her displeasure.
"Got a problem with that?" Anglistra retorted. Red Dragons are as temperamental as they are unpredictable.
"No, no problem at all," Adya quickly responded, knowing all too well what Anglistra’s temper was like.
"You can leave now. I’ll contact you if I need anything," Anglistra said, dismissing them.
Adya led the Githyanki delegation away aboard their Star Realm speedboat.
Indeed, Anglistra wasn’t interested in that Giant Dragon Lord. She refused to subordinate herself to anyone else—she simply wanted to meet her daughter. Supporting her mother should be an expected duty of any daughter, right? Just as she prepared to set off for the so-called Watchtower Port, she stood and found herself too lazy to move.
