Chapter 185: Chapter 185: No Qualification to Resume Studies

"Exam?" Sang Chuan’s tone rose slightly.

Gao Mingsong glanced at him and sneered, "What? The moment you hear there’s going to be an exam, you think you have no hope of returning to school after all?"

"No, no, no, it’s just too promising!" Sang Chuan suddenly leaned forward, wrapped his arms around Gao Mingsong, and puckered his lips as if he were about to kiss him.

Truth be told, he was eager to test the results of his month-long study effort, and an exam was the best way to do it.

Gao Mingsong slapped his hand over Sang Chuan’s face and forcefully pushed him away, his expression full of disgust. "I despise students who rely on crooked tactics. Don’t even think about buttering me up to get by!"

"Mr. Gao, please be reassured. Sang Chuan now has the ability to pass the exam. I promise he will earn the qualification to return to school fair and square," Sang Ning leaned forward a little with an expression of sincere earnestness.

Gao Mingsong was unmoved and cast a skeptical, contemptuous glance at Sang Ning. "And what makes you able to give such a guarantee?"

Sang Ning’s eyebrows curved slightly, a calm confidence on her face. "Because I tutored him every single day for an entire month."

She couldn’t quite guarantee that Sang Chuan would score high marks, but she was sure he could secure the basic passing points.

Otherwise, all her effort from the past month would be in vain.

And if things really went wrong, well—she’d just beat Sang Chuan to death.

Gao Mingsong acted as though he’d just heard some outrageous fairytale. Resting his right hand on the desk, he stood up, tilted his lips, and scoffed humorously. "Little girl, the exam I’m talking about is a full subject exam! Just tutoring him in language won’t be enough."

With his built-in biases, Gao Mingsong thought that someone like Sang Ning—such a pretty girl—would surely struggle with science subjects. At most, she could only scratch the surface of topics like language.

Sang Chuan, worried that his sister’s hard work would be dismissed, quickly chimed in, "Old Gao, my sister tutored me in all subjects!"

Gao Mingsong’s gaze grew even more disdainful. He didn’t even bother responding; he clearly saw no value in talking further with these two siblings.

The arrogance—it ran deep in both of them, like they couldn’t even sense the mountain-sized obstacles in front of them.

Without sparing them another serious glance, Gao Mingsong stepped past the pair, looked into the distance, and loudly called out, "Mr. Wang, organize this—prepare the math and science tests only."

"Got it, Director. I’ll arrange it right away." A young male teacher at the next desk stood up, took the task, but not without throwing a disdainful and annoyed look toward Sang Ning.

Sang Ning sensed the unexplained hostility and followed the gaze, meeting Wang Meng’s stare head-on without any hesitation. Her pitch-black eyes seemed to carry a chilling frost.

Wang Meng, rattled under her gaze, instinctively averted his eyes.

It was just typical—girls like Sang Ning, overly pretty ones, were always so arrogant. Not only did they spout absurd boasts, but now she even dared to use such a condescending stare to look at him.

While preparing the test papers, Wang Meng deliberately chose the hardest set. Shortly, he’d be ready to witness how these siblings would embarrass themselves.

Sang Chuan was escorted to an empty classroom, where two teachers took turns supervising his exam.

The test papers were specifically designed by Shuixi First Middle School to assess students’ knowledge levels, with fewer questions and less time compared to standard exams.

Meanwhile, Sang Ning sat in the office, waiting for Sang Chuan to finish. Two hours later, she glanced at the clock on the wall and muttered to herself, "He should be done by now."

Gao Mingsong, busy with his lesson plan, overheard her and looked at the clock. Then he snorted dismissively, "This set of test papers might be lighter in volume, but to complete both the math and science subjects, it would take a minimum of three hours. If it’s only been two hours, unless Sang Chuan gave up halfway, there’s no way he could’ve finished."

Sang Ning didn’t argue with him. She simply stood up. "I’ll go check near the door."

"Finished!"

She had barely risen, let alone moved, when the door was flung open and someone yelled dramatically.

Gao Mingsong looked up—it was one of the teachers responsible for invigilating Sang Chuan’s exam.

As the invigilating teacher’s words sunk in, Gao Mingsong couldn’t help but mentally fill in the blanks—

The three-hour exam wasn’t over yet, but Sang Chuan must’ve requested to submit his paper early. This would mean he had likely given up. And just like that, his school re-admission chances were finished.

Thinking this, Gao Mingsong tilted his chin higher and gave Sang Ning a look, hands clasped behind his back as he coldly snorted, "Finished is finished. I generously gave him a chance, but if he chooses to give up, then nothing can stop him."

"He didn’t give up." The invigilating teacher seemed confused by his remark, scratching his head as he clarified, "What I meant was, Sang Chuan has already completed the papers!"

???

Gao Mingsong’s head jerked forward, his back hunched slightly—a posture uncannily akin to that of a turtle craning its neck.

Wang Meng approached, leaning toward Gao Mingsong’s ear to whisper, "Director, Sang Chuan definitely winged the answers carelessly. Once the grading starts, we’ll see the truth immediately."

Hearing this, Gao Mingsong straightened his posture again.

Of course—how much improvement could a chronic academic failure make in just one summer?

"Give me the math test paper. The science papers can go to the physics, chemistry, and biology teachers." Gao Mingsong stretched out his hand, asking for the test papers from the teacher.

He intended to personally examine whether Sang Chuan, this hopeless student, had somehow managed to set a new low.

Taking the math sheet, Wang Meng also nabbed the science one from the invigilating teacher’s hands. "I’ll start with physics."

As the two began grading, Sang Chuan dashed into the office, shouting, "Teach, what’s going on? You snatched my test papers and bolted off—can’t you wait a bit?"

To him, it felt inexplicably bizarre. He had merely raised his hand to ask if he could hand in his paper early, but the teacher had grabbed his test sheets without saying a word and sprinted off.

The invigilating teacher, now feeling somewhat exposed, silently averted his gaze. What could he say—that he’d rushed to get results so he could enjoy the spectacle?

Sang Chuan’s arrival drew the attention of Gao Mingsong, who was already engrossed in grading. Passing Sang Ning as he approached, he tossed her a smug, self-assured look, arching his brow playfully.

Sang Ning merely cast her eyes downward, throwing him a cool glance that immediately dampened his pompous attitude.

Once reined in, Sang Chuan sauntered off to sit casually nearby, awaiting his verdict.

Truth be told, Sang Chuan hadn’t been remotely nervous during the exam. He had breezed through the questions with confidence and was sure he’d clinch the qualification to return to school.

By now, he was entirely relaxed, treating the office like his living room as he strolled over to the water dispenser, bent down, and opened its cabinet to grab two disposable plastic cups.

First, he poured himself a cup of chilled water. Then, he thoughtfully prepared a warmer cup for Sang Ning.

Taking the glass she was offered, Sang Ning took a sip before abruptly looking up at him. "Why on earth do you seem so familiar with this office?"

Sang Chuan chuckled mischievously. "I’m here every other day for a scolding—how could I not be familiar?"

Sang Ning: "..."

She was utterly resigned. Was there really any pride to be found in such a statement?

"Enough laughing!" Gao Mingsong suddenly shouted.

Both Sang Chuan and Sang Ning turned their heads to look and saw Gao Mingsong roughly shoving the test paper aside on his desk with a stiff expression. "Sang Chuan, I’m sorry, but you did not earn the qualification to return to school!"
