Chapter 326 - 319: What to Do When There’s Nothing to Say

Chapter 326: Chapter 319: What to Do When There’s Nothing to Say

The reason they had set the wedding in July was twofold: first, He Fang had summer vacation which provided plenty of free time to monitor the wedding preparations, and second, it truly was an auspicious day.

"Should we rent the wedding dress or buy one? Why not just buy one and keep it as a memento after wearing it?"

When Qin Guanglin was picking out wedding dress styles and saw the prices, he felt they were affordable and suggested to He Fang.

As He Fang browsed the various wedding dresses in the store, she said indifferently, "It’ll only be worn once, so why buy it just to display it?"

"Having it on display is quite nice too... I’ve heard that in the West, many people keep their wedding dresses for their daughters. It has both collectible value and sentimental value, which is pretty nice..."

Qin Guanglin was speaking when a nearby clerk overheard and nodded vigorously, "Yes, that’s right. Moreover, if you buy a wedding dress, it can be tailored to fit perfectly, and the style can also be freely altered. Most importantly, you don’t have to worry about many others having worn it."

"The cost-performance ratio is too low, and there are also the toasting outfits, evening gowns... where would you put them all?" He Fang shook her head. "Just rent a nice one."

Qin Guanglin didn’t respond, instead he looked at the gowns on the wall, stroked his chin, and thought for a while before saying, "Buy the wedding dress, and rent the other two. Wouldn’t that be perfect?"

It was their only wedding, and he wanted to make it as good as possible, not just go through the motions.

A wedding dress was probably a dream for many girls; not wearing one in a lifetime would be a regret. And having a dress that belonged solely to oneself, which could be stored in a closet and revisited years later, would certainly bring more joy than a rented one.

Thinking this, he immediately turned to the clerk and asked, "How long would it take to make a custom wedding dress?"

"For custom orders, it varies from one to three months depending on the specific style and requirements. Hand-sewn ones take longer..."

"That long?" Qin Guanglin frowned. His inexperience had become a disadvantage; there was only one month left until the wedding, and they wouldn’t make it in time.

"Uh... When is the gentleman getting married?" the clerk asked.

"At the end of July."

"Ah, that’s too soon for a completely custom-tailored dress... If you would like to buy one, you can only choose from those that are ready-made and maybe make minor adjustments."

"Do you really want to buy one?" He Fang glanced at him, feeling somehow that he was up to no good.

Wedding dress play?

It seemed like back when they got married, he regretted not buying one... She scoffed internally and turned her head away.

Hmph, men.

"Could it be fake?" Qin Guanglin, unaware of where her thoughts had wandered to, was just simply thinking of keeping a memento. He thought for a moment and then said to the clerk, "Do you have any new ones that haven’t been rented out?"

"Yes, right this way."

Running a bridal shop inevitably involved accommodating various demands, and this was one of the more common ones. Naturally, the clerk was prepared, nodded, and led the couple toward another side.

Looking at the array of wedding dresses displayed in the store, Qin Guanglin asked, "Are these all new?"

"They are all new, placed here right out of the factory. If someone rents them, they are moved over there," the clerk pointed where they had come from, and continued, "Also, a part of these, like these few here, aren’t available for rent, only for purchase."

"That’s good."

Qin Guanglin was pleased, took He Fang’s hand, and they walked around the area, scrutinizing it for a moment before he said, "Choose, see which one you like."

"Isn’t it which one you like?" He Fang squinted at him.

"Huh?" Qin Guanglin scratched his head. "You’re wearing it, so of course, you should choose."

"Oh."

...

...

In July, the sun was scorching.

Those with nothing to do stayed at home, enjoying the air conditioning and eating ice pops, hiding from the heat.

In this weather, just walking under the sun for an hour or two could cause one’s skin to tan unevenly and Qin Guanglin had an arm that had suffered just that. Originally fairly fair-skinned, he was still white when undressed, except for his left arm, which appeared darker—thanks to his job as an umbrella guard.

When they went out, he completely shielded He Fang with an umbrella while inadvertently exposing half of his body, resulting in one arm being lighter and the other darker.

Qin Guanglin stood flexing his body in front of the bathroom mirror, looking from left to right, and decided that next time he would switch hands holding the umbrella to even out the tan.

As the wedding date approached, his excitement grew, but so did his calmness—a contradiction, indeed strange. He was excited yet felt settled, much like when he proposed. He knew He Fang would definitely accept his proposal; this was confidence. Now, he felt the same confidence that the wedding would be perfect—they would go through the motions and then officially become married, forming a new family with He Fang.

A home for two, then three, perhaps even a family of four: These are the passages of life, until the ruins are reached a century later. In between, there might be joy and happiness, but also arguments and conflicts—yet that’s just life; no need to fret or worry.

Live well in the present, seize happiness; that’s what truly matters.

"Where should we go for our honeymoon? Maybe another beach; I feel like I need a tan."

After his shower, Qin Guanglin ran into the bedroom wearing shorts, while He Fang hadn’t started her nap yet, lounging on the edge of the bed licking an ice pop and playing Fight the Landlord, her feet swinging leisurely—looking utterly relaxed.

Hearing Qin Guanglin’s words, He Fang quietly rolled her eyes, but didn’t look up as she responded, "You’re cheeky enough already; no need to get any cheekier."

Working up a sweat midday and taking a shower, this guy is a lost cause.

Qin Guanglin couldn’t help but laugh, "Listen to you... I find you’re getting dirtier. I hear that’s how young wives act; has the evolution kicked in even before the wedding?"

"Does it make a difference whether we have a wedding or not?"

"Uh... guess not, actually."

Plopping onto the bed and rolling a few times, he scooted over to nuzzle her hand and look at the ceiling, squinting slightly, then after a moment of silence, he mused aloud, "Tell me, what’s the point of living a life, really?"

"Has it been that long, and now it’s time for sage talk?"

"Quit it, I’m serious. I used to wonder; do we live just for the sake of living?"

Sun Wen had once asked the same question; his answer had been that we live just for the sake of living, but now thinking back, it seemed too monotonous, too bland.

One ought to have some goals, something to strive for to stay motivated.

His previous goal was to marry He Fang; now that he’d achieved that, the next set of goals seemed absent—like reaching max level in a game where mastering the Nine Heavens Ten Earths Eight Desolates Six Harmonies Only I Am Supreme Skill left no new challenges; having children was merely like training a junior account.

That feeling... definitely had a sage-like quality.

Once lifelong pursuits are attained, it’s inevitable to feel some emptiness, which was exactly his current state.

He Fang could probably guess his thoughts and after pondering said, "We live to experience life, if you find it dull, help me win some beans; have you paid off your old debts to me yet?"

"That lousy game—I put in five hundred bucks for you."

Qin Guanglin gave a squeeze, which led He Fang to smack him on the back with a slap as he then chuckled and got up, grabbing his phone to call Xiao Yu.

Dial tone... Dial tone...

"Call me daddy... Hello? What’s up, Lin?"

"No way, your kid is too young to start with ’daddy’! If the kid could think, he’d probably wonder ’Is this guy sick or what?’" he laughed.

"Getting it ingrained early, might be a prodigy... cut the crap, what’s up?"

"No big deal, just felt like chatting, but if you’re busy, never mind." Qin Guanglin shook his head—ever since Xiao Yu became a dad, he even stopped fishing, spending weekends holed up at home playing with his kid.

"Not busy, what is it? Something about the wedding you want to ask, or something else?" Xiao Yu got up from bed, signaled to Zhou Nan, slipped on slippers, strolled into the living room, and leaned on the couch to talk with Qin Guanglin. "Or is there trouble in paradise?"

"Not a chance; just wondering, you’ve been married for over a year, almost two, right? How does it feel?"

"What do you mean?"

"Like after getting married... jeez, I’m not sure how to put it. I’m feeling a slight fear of marriage these days, feels like we don’t talk as much after getting married..."

Xiao Yu snorted at that, "You’re overthinking. Let me tell you, marriage is just the beginning; everyday there’s this and that keeping you busy non-stop, fear of marriage my ass."

"...Alright then." Qin Guanglin, having never been married, lacked the experience whereas Xiao Yu, with experience, was surely right.

"If you’re worried about running out of things to talk about, I’ll teach you," Xiao Yu continued, "Sure to be lively every day, with never-ending conversations."

"How so?"

"When you’ve nothing else to do, just tease her a bit, make her cry, then cheer her up again, and the day’s over, hahaha..."

"..."

After a moment of silence, Qin Guanglin said, "Is that how it is at your place? Free time just gets you a crying session followed by a make-up session, and the day’s gone?"

Xiao Yu’s laughter abruptly stopped.

"My phone’s running out of battery, let’s leave it there for now, hanging up now."
