Chapter 275 - 271: Christmas, Night

Chapter 275: Chapter 271: Christmas, Night

Christmas was a good day.

Sun Wen was driving a black BMW X3 on the road, with soothing music playing inside the car, gently humming along to the tune. On the passenger seat, there was a thick red envelope and an embossed wedding invitation.

He was on his way to a banquet.

There was no name of the invitee written on the invitation—it wouldn’t have mattered if there was, as no one would check IDs.

The sky was dark, with light snow continuously falling. The streets had already acquired a thin white layer, and as the car passed by, it left several dark tracks stretching into the distance.

The wedding venue was a moderately nice hotel, not too luxurious but not shabby either, with a large inflatable arch at the entrance, bright red and festive.

Xu Yue.

Sun Wen stood at the entrance for a long while, staring at the bride’s name above before straightening his clothes, taking the red envelope and invitation, and walking into the hotel.

He looked around but didn’t see the newlyweds; he somewhat regretfully tossed the red envelope onto the gift collection table, smiling and pointing at himself, "Sun Wen, 300."

"That’s a good name." The middle-aged man collecting gifts also smiled at him, making a gesture with his pen, "Wen as in literature?"

"Exactly."

"Three hundred... that’s quite thick, isn’t it?"

After writing down the name, the middle-aged man picked up the red envelope, somewhat puzzled as he shook it a little.

Sun Wen leaned in, lowered his voice, and mysteriously smiled, "It’s for a buddy of mine, we go way back, there’s some surprise inside."

"Oh, as long as it’s not mistaken."

He just kept the accounts, knowing the numbers were correct was enough; the newlyweds’ jokes had nothing to do with him.

As he watched the red envelope being tucked away, Sun Wen straightened up and casually glanced over at the venue, settling down at a not fully occupied table in the corner, examining the invitation.

Holding the banquet in the evening was rather romantic.

Half an hour later, as the clock hands moved to six, the emcee briskly walked onto the central stage with a script to begin the opening speech.

Lights, fog, music...

The newlyweds entered...

Both parents delivered blessings...

The couple exchanged rings...

Sun Wen sat quietly in the corner watching them look at each other, exchange rings, kiss, his face showing neither sorrow nor joy.

He had imagined this scene countless times before; now that the day had finally come, the main character had turned into that slightly bald middle-aged man.

He suddenly felt a bit sick.

Soon, twenty minutes passed, and amid cheers, the newlyweds left the stage, the emcee announced the start of the wedding feast.

With all the dishes served, a table of strangers chatted enthusiastically, toasting and urging drinks, while Sun Wen sat there alone, quietly eating, until the newlyweds came to toast, and a trace of a smile finally appeared on his face.

"Thank you all for gracing us with your presence, enhancing this event! We apologize for any shortcomings tonight, please bear with us..."

The groom, with a high receding hairline, had a flush of red on his face, his forehead shiny as he held up a wine glass, waving it around the room, completely oblivious to the bride’s nervousness beside him.

Sun Wen sat there, grinning and making eye contact with Xu Yue, watching her anxious and tense face, silently, without saying or doing anything.

Xu Yue clung to the arm next to her, her fingers tightly grasping his sleeve, her heart sinking more and more.

She didn’t know why Sun Wen had appeared here, at her wedding, but she did know that he wasn’t here to bless her.

"Buddy." The groom called out, lifting his glass towards Sun Wen, "Come on, let’s drink one together."

Sun Wen glanced at the groom, everyone beside him had already picked up their glasses; he also lifted his glass, smiling broadly as he stood up, "Congratulations, congratulations, let’s talk about drinking together later, first let me drink one on my own."

He turned towards Xu Yue, drew back his lips, "I’ll finish mine first, you do as you like."

"..."

The table looked at him in confusion, not understanding what this meant, and the groom frowned, "You..."

"Sun Wen! Don’t go too far!" Xu Yue glared at him fiercely, yet her body shrank behind the groom.

"How is having a drink with your husband going too far?" Sun Wen still wore a smile, retorting with a question before glancing at the groom’s cup, waving his hand, "I’ve finished mine, why haven’t you taken a sip yet?"

"What’s going on here...?"

The groom frowned, glanced at Xu Yue, and then turned to Sun Wen, "Okay, I’ll take a sip."

Watching the groom take a sip, Sun Wen’s smile grew even brighter, and he placed his cup down, "There we go... I’ve had my drink, I should be leaving now,"

He was already lifting his leg to leave, as if his sole purpose had been to have a drink with the groom.

Xu Yue stared at him intently, and seeing that he was truly about to go, she breathed a sigh of relief.

No one wants their wedding disrupted, especially by an ex-lover.

"You came here just to have this drink with me?" The groom voiced his confusion.

Sun Wen paused in his tracks, chuckled, and said, "Exactly, I wish you a lifetime of happiness."

The groom glanced again at Xu Yue, "Why?"

"Because we’re on the same side," Sun Wen put his hands in his pockets and shrugged, "I..."

"Sun Wen!" Xu Yue snapped, frustrated.

"I like your wife, and you like your wife; we’re on the same side. Having a drink to celebrate our camaraderie," Sun Wen ignored her indignation, spoke cheerily, and walked away.

The guests around the table looked at each other, unsure how to react. Who had ever witnessed such a scene?

Was this a wedding crash?

The groom’s expression soured, and he stepped forward to follow, but hesitated at the sight of Sun Wen’s tall, sturdy back. Xu Yue clung tightly to his arm, hastily explaining, "He... He pursued me unsuccessfully before and was... was rejected by me, and just couldn’t accept it..."

"Is that so?" The groom’s face softened slightly.

"Uh-huh." Xu Yue nodded vigorously, "Let’s just ignore him. Today is our wedding, let’s focus on getting through the ceremony."

The groom watched resentfully as Sun Wen left the hotel lobby. When Sun Wen disappeared around the corner, he composed himself and turned to the uneasy guests, awkwardly saying, "Everyone, please enjoy your food and drink, let’s toast."

Xu Yue lowered her head, silently relieved. Fortunately, Sun Wen hadn’t made a bigger scene... perhaps he was wary of stirring up trouble in front of so many people?

They had broken up long ago, yet he was still staging such dramas—just as immature as ever.

The immature Sun Wen had stepped outside, looked back expressionlessly at the names on the archway, walked over to his car, breathed on his hand and smelled it, frowned, and climbed into the car to grab a bottle of mineral water. After several mouth rinses to lighten the taste of alcohol, he started the car.

The car slowly left the hotel, and Sun Wen watched through the rearview mirror as the red archway under the hotel lights receded further, memories flashing through his mind.

The black car roamed around Luo City like a ghost, circling endlessly without fatigue.

Screech—

A sharp brake noise rang out as the car abruptly stopped by the roadside, blending into the dark night. Sun Wen rolled down the window, a blast of cold air made him shiver, and scattered snowflakes blew into the car, landing coldly on his face.

"Fuck your mother!"

A hoarse and exhausted shout echoed out of the car window, drifting far with the cold winter wind.

Elsewhere in a hotel, Xiao Yu looked up at the window then lowered his head again, tightening his embrace around the person next to him.

"I’ll just put it in, won’t move, is that okay?"

"Do you promise?"

"I promise."

His voice was serious and earnest.

At South Fly Road, number 315, Qin Guanglin’s brows were tightly furrowed as he stared at the computer screen, the fluorescent light flickering on his face.

A light click of the mouse, he glanced back at the person already asleep on the bed, placed his hands on the keyboard, and typed a few characters to search again.

The night deepened.

Doubts slowly burgeoned in his heart.
