Chapter 257: Chapter 253: You Found a Bodhisattva?

When Qin Guanglin saw Sun Wen again, it was the end of August.

Xiao Yu had bought a Cadillac worth over 200,000 and wanted to show off to both of them. Leaning against the car, he put on an affected pose. But when he saw Sun Wen getting out of a BMW, his eyes instantly widened in astonishment.

"Holy shit, Wen, did you rob a bank?"

He had thought Qin Guanglin’s Audi was flashy enough. He had longed for it for a while and had finally saved up money to buy a dreamy car, only to be hit hard by this new development.

"It’s a loan, and it’s second-hand," Sun Wen casually brushed off the topic. Seeing Xiao Yu inspecting the car from east to west, he didn’t mind and turned his head to ask, "Has Lin arrived yet?"

"He should be here soon... This isn’t borrowed, is it?" Xiao Yu still found it hard to believe. The car was a bit showy, and for people like them, it seemed unnecessary.

"Consider it borrowed."

Meanwhile, Qin Guanglin had also gotten out of a taxi and arrived, greeting the two almost immediately after Sun Wen. He too looked surprised when he saw the BMW but didn’t say much.

"Why did you come by taxi?"

"My car was taken for use, what else could I do but take a taxi?" Qin Guanglin laughed, "Let’s go inside, why stand here?"

He Fang and Qin’s Mom went to stroll through the old street together. He didn’t want to have them cram onto a bus in the hot weather and convinced He Fang to drive instead.

After being cooped up at home during the school break, He Fang was happy to go out with Qin’s Mom. They left Qin Guanglin alone at home and strolled through the old street, occasionally picking up some small trinkets to bring back.

"Wen, you’ve bulked up, huh? Are you living in the gym 24/7 now? I bet your boss is losing money."

"Losing my ass, it’s just a monthly membership. You obviously haven’t gone," scoffed Sun Wen, then he pinched Qin Guanglin, "This guy here really has bulked up; he’s gotten muscular."

"I just casually work out to lose weight, I can’t compare with you."

"Just me, weak, helpless, but still able to eat," Xiao Yu sighed with a slight bow, feeling somewhat demoralized.

After more than half a year without seeing each other, one had gotten a BMW and the other looked more robust and stable, almost like a different person, exuding a completely different aura.

Qin Guanglin had been a director for almost half a year—although officially it had only been for two months, but he had already taken on the role earlier, and his actions had indeed cultivated some leadership qualities. He sat with a sense of steadiness, quickly ran through the menu, and passed it to the others.

"How have you been lately? Seems like you’re both doing well."

"Can’t compare to you two, but it’s much better than before, less overtime, and a bit higher pay," replied Xiao Yu. Since switching jobs after the new year, he found quite a decent company. He could make over eight thousand a month, sometimes even ten thousand, and importantly, he had weekends off, which was rare in his field.

He had been quite proud of his salary and treatment. Although it was average in Luo City, it compared favorably among his peers—now, next to these two, it seemed like nothing.

Sun Wen crossed his hands behind his head and sighed aloud, "It’s okay, sometimes I make a good sum selling courses, otherwise I just stick to the base salary."

"Heh—modesty is good, but too much humility is just shitty," Xiao Yu exaggeratedly sighed, "A base salary lets you get a BMW?"

"Lucky, I guess," Sun Wen smiled and turned to Qin Guanglin, "Heard you’ve become a director?"

"Yeah, not too long ago."

Qin Guanglin didn’t hide it; it was all above board. Although Sun Wen had introduced him to the company initially, the intent wasn’t purely altruistic, and moreover, he had tried to persuade Sun Wen to stay, but Sun Wen was set on going solo and wouldn’t listen.

Sun Wen felt somewhat mixed emotions, took out a cigarette and sighed, "You deserve it, without you, Chen Rui alone wouldn’t have been able to hold up the company like this."

"What’s going on? Who’s Chen Rui, your boss?" asked Xiao Yu curiously.

"It’s nothing." Sun Wen pulled out a cigarette and tossed it to Xiao Yu, "Not quit yet?"

"Almost there."

Xiao Yu caught the cigarette, put it in his mouth, and gestured with his fingers, "Light."

"Bumming cigarettes and now fire..." grumbled Sun Wen.

Qin Guanglin still remembered the last time Xiao Yu nervously stretched his neck and sniffed around, laughing as he asked, "Aren’t you afraid of getting beat up when you get home?"

"Pfft, you guys..." Xiao Yu clacked his teeth and pointed at the two, "always thinking about me getting beat up. How could I possibly get beaten? It’s funny, it’s just a cigarette... I can smoke three a day, and now I’m just smoking the second one."

"Ha ha ha, smoke a few more, since you already smell like it. Just go home and say you only smoked one," Sun Wen suggested.

"What are you talking about? This is my choice, I gotta have some self-discipline. We’re not living together; I can smoke as much as I want if I feel like it."

Amid the laughter, the dishes were served, and Sun Wen took a few bites before looking up at the pair and heaving a deep sigh.

Initially, when the three of them drank together, they talked about who would get married first, taking that final step of fulfillment. Back then, he was the furthest ahead; Qin Guanglin had just gotten a girlfriend, and Xiao Yu had no prospects, just a cat he was hoping would repay his kindness.

Now, it was the other two who had stable, ongoing relationships, and he ended up alone, trailing behind.

"How about it, you’ve been together for over a year now, had any fights?" Sun Wen still remembered Qin Guanglin saying they had never argued and now brought it up, nudging his chin towards Qin Guanglin.

Qin Guanglin shook his head, saying, "You were right. It was just that we hadn’t been together long enough to argue before. With more time, conflicts are inevitable."

Sun Wen seemed to relish the drama, "How many times have you fought?"

"Just once."

"Hey, only once?"

"Of course, what else did you expect?" Qin Guanglin shrugged, putting down his chopsticks, "We fought in the afternoon and made up by evening."

"What did you fight about?" Xiao Yu interjected, curious.

"Um... money."

"You guys fought over money too, huh? Sheesh," Sun Wen suddenly felt irritable, tapping his chopstick against his plate, making a thunking sound, "Women just freakin’ care about money..."

"No, no," Qin Guanglin waved his hands, "It’s not like what you think. She didn’t consult me and donated all the money she earned to charity. We just had a little argument over that."

"..."

"..."

Xiao Yu and Sun Wen were stunned, and an eerie silence fell over the dining table. After a moment, they exchanged glances and cautiously asked, "This ’all’ you mentioned, how much is that?"

Donating money wasn’t new to Xiao Yu; he donated too, albeit in small amounts on some treasure site to improve some credit score.

Praising someone as a ’good Samaritan’ for donating even one-tenth of their earnings would already be something, but to donate ’all’ of it, in reality, was unheard of. The most he’d seen were occasional donations of a few tens or hundreds, the more generous might throw in a few thousand, and those who could donate tens of thousands were usually entrepreneurs or bosses.

Qin Guanglin didn’t see any reason to hide it, straightforwardly saying, "Eighty thousand."

"..."

"..."

Sun Wen opened his mouth to speak, propped his elbow on the table and wiped his lips with his hand, then fell silent again.

He didn’t know what to say.

Last year, when he was working under Chen Rui, he didn’t make eighty thousand in half a year.

The world of the wealthy was truly different.

After a long while, Xiao Yu spoke up solemnly.

"You’ve found yourself a living saint."
