Chapter 256: Chapter 252: Bad Premonition
Qin Guanglin was proud of his promotion.
He Fang had always led a life that was neither warm nor fervent, attending classes, writing novels, and seeming quite content with this lifestyle, rarely caring about his income—at least she never did until he brought it up, only then responding perfunctorily with apparent indifference.
He Fang might have been indifferent, but it mattered greatly to him.
As the family pillar—well, the future family pillar— a man’s confidence often stemmed from his income. If she could earn as much as him by casually writing novels, while keeping the home in perfect order, he would only be able to assert himself at night.
Though he could accept such a life, it didn’t sit well with him... Maybe it was a bit of chauvinism, but Qin Guanglin felt that since He Fang already excelled at being a woman in every aspect, he, as a man, should excel at men’s responsibilities.
Building a family and career, the family was He Fang’s domain, and the career was his; that was the best way for two people to get along.
—It wasn’t about pursuing equality with clear boundaries but about a man’s duty and responsibility.
Now brimming with confidence, he halted his talk of future plans, stopped the car at a red light intersection, looked up, and said, "Let’s go eat lobster!"
"I’m allergic to lobster."
"Then shark fin soup!"
"Not tasty."
"Abalone!"
"Ugly, I can’t bring myself to eat it."
"Hey!" Qin Guanglin turned and pinched her cheek, "You’re doing this on purpose, right? Tell me, what do you want to eat?"
"Look how showy you are, just for a promotion. I didn’t flaunt as much when I published my book," He Fang rolled her eyes with some disdain, "To the uninformed, you’d think you won the lottery, acting like a nouveau riche."
"Yes, you don’t swagger. Quietly, you donated all your royalties, you’re the real definition of ’low-key luxury.’"
Qin Guanglin shrugged, reached into his pocket, took out a piece of fruit candy, unwrapped it, and popped it into her mouth, "Then don’t eat anything, just have candy. After all, you are a fairy. You can get full just on candy."
The light turned green, and the car slowly started again, heading towards Shengtian Square. He Fang, candy in her mouth, glanced at him while he concentrated on driving. Qin Guanglin, gaze forward, smiled at the corners of his mouth. He was still dressed in plain casual wear, but he somehow looked different.
After persisting in the gym for over half a year, although he hadn’t developed the physique of a bodybuilder, there were definitely improvements. Like he had been inflated, his shoulders and torso had become thicker. The once slightly loose shirt was now taut, fitting well and giving him a more dignified look rather than his prior rustic appearance.
From his temperament to his appearance, there were significant changes. To the point He Fang felt a slight sense of unfamiliarity.
The scenery outside whizzed by, Qin Guanglin’s fingers tapping lightly on the steering wheel, he suddenly asked:
"Is it sweet?"
He Fang nodded subconsciously, "Sweet."
"I love you." Qin Guanglin, seeing He Fang staring blankly at him through the rearview mirror, smiled at her, "Wait for me to park the car, then I’ll have to kiss you fiercely."
"..."
He Fang paused, a smile spreading from the corners of her mouth across her face, her eyes curving as she looked at him, then unbuckled her seatbelt and leaned over to peck his cheek, "Is that how it is?"
No matter how he changed, inside he was still Fool Qin.
Whether chubby, skinny, or buff, he remained unchanged.
"Not like that."
"What’s it like, then?"
"You’ll know in a bit. I have to show you what ’fiercely’ means."
He Fang chuckled, turning her head to look out the window without saying more, the bulge of candy puffing out her cheek, she smacked her lips, moving it to the other side, savoring the lychee candy in her mouth, the tangle in her heart quietly unraveling.
All things straighten out with time; one can only take it step by step. No matter what, cherishing the present is what’s most important.
The dinner location they finally chose was the lamb spine hot pot restaurant where they had eaten before.
Large portions, satisfying, and most importantly, delicious.
Qin Guanglin looked at the bubbling soup base on the table, the pile of lamb bones inside releasing a fragrant aroma, then glanced at He Fang and said, "Why do I have a bad feeling?"
"Just eat!" He Fang saw right through what he was thinking, gave him a look, and picked out a piece with her chopsticks to put in his bowl, then poured some soup into another bowl and set it aside.
The air conditioning inside the restaurant was set very low, and drinking cold beverages even gave a slight chill, but once they started eating the hot pot, the temperature didn’t matter anymore. Both of them, sweating, gnawed on the bones, truly more enjoyable than eating something like a Western steak.
"Imagine... once I’ve made enough money in the future, could I become a PE teacher at your school?"
"Hm?"
"You teach Chinese, write novels in your free time, and I’d teach PE, draw when I’m not busy, wouldn’t that be great? Plus, we could commute together... Oh, do PE teachers have offices? Would I sit with you?" Qin Guanglin thought the idea of both of them being teachers didn’t sound too bad.
However, that would be in their thirties or forties. By then they could even retire together.
"Why not be an art teacher?" He Fang was puzzled by that.
"Aren’t PE teachers more laid back, though? Just sit in the office and drink tea when sick all day, teaching art is too bothersome, what can you really learn in primary school.
...Like that chubby kid next door, can’t even draw a cat, and comes up with all sorts of weird ideas every day. If I managed to teach him, I’d definitely end up with some kind of human-sized cannon cat."
Qin Guanglin’s calculation seemed sound, the only uncertain thing was whether PE teachers actually had an office. If they didn’t even have a place for an office, that would be terrible.
The idea of a couple both being teachers, it did have a certain appeal.
"Then quit your job and take the teacher qualification," He Fang was quite straightforward. No matter what kind of teacher, he would be under her watchful eye, which was better than him working outside.
Qin Guanglin shook his head, "Not now, I’ll wait until I’ve made enough money."
"How much is enough?"
"Well... at least there should be a house, and a house for our son too, and then... right, two houses plus some savings. Then we can rent out one and live in the other, and we can peacefully nurture the flowers of the motherland."
"Two houses, and rent one out," He Fang snorted through her nose, "Why don’t you just plan for retirement?"
"Everyone should have dreams, what if they come true?"
"My dream is for you to stay at home and paint for me, waiting for me to get off work."
"Then wouldn’t I just be a househusband? Why don’t you stay at home and write novels, waiting for me to get off work?" Qin Guanglin countered.
He Fang thought for a moment and asked, "Do you like comics?"
"Uh..." This stumped Qin Guanglin, did he like them?
Comics were just a tool, a platform to document their daily life on WeChat, a way to make money at the company. As for comics themselves, he couldn’t say he liked or disliked them.
It was like asking, "Do you like bowls?"
Bowls were for eating; there was no liking or disliking, only the need to use them, and thus they were used.
"I enjoy being a teacher," He Fang continued, "so I don’t just stay home writing novels. What about you? Do you like your current job?"
"..."
"You used to love drawing, and now..."
"Now, I love you," Qin Guanglin interrupted and smiled as he ladled soup into her bowl and passed it to her, "Eat up, you talk too much, just focus on being a teacher."
"Oh." He Fang pouted, "I hope you can do a job you love, and be happy working."
"You support me, that’s the job I’d love most, and I’d be very happy doing it."
"Pfft, dream on."
