Chapter 213: Chapter 209: Mortal
"I am a lawyer, anything you need to discuss, you can talk to me."
He Shan, true to his name, wore a benign smile, but his words baffled the three people across from him.
Lawyer?
It was just a fight... Why was a lawyer involved now?
"That..." The skinny middle-aged man in the middle hesitated before speaking, "The kids were just being mischievous and fought. We came to see the situation, it’s not so serious that..."
"Kids being mischievous?" He Shan tilted his head and interrupted, "Kids aren’t held criminally responsible. Maybe the precinct arrested the wrong people. Why don’t you go check there first? The issue here involves adults."
"You..."
"As for the situation here... The injuries are severe, and if you’re here to express your concerns for the parties involved—they’re not conveniently available right now. Better to come back another day."
"..."
"..."
"Which kind of lawyer are you? We want to talk to the parties involved!" The middle-aged woman interjected impatiently, "A kid gets into a fight and ends up in the hospital? Are you just trying to extort..."
"Shut up!"
The middle-aged man frowned and interrupted her, and after a moment’s thought, turned to He Shan. Just as he was about to speak, he saw He Shan cheerfully pull out a business card from his upper shirt pocket and hand it over, which he involuntarily accepted.
"Anything you need to discuss, you can talk to me. The parties involved don’t want to see you—if you’re not mistaken, this issue doesn’t involve children here. This isn’t like some star in their thirties still acting like a child. Once adult, you need to be responsible for your actions, and it’s not just a matter of calling it a kids’ fight."
"..."
"That... It’s not serious, right? I heard it was just..."
"The severity is for the doctor to decide. Nobody knows until the assessment results come out."
"Let’s get straight to the point, how much money do you want?" another slightly plump man beside him asked.
"May I ask who you are...?" He Shan inquired, looking at him.
"Never mind who I am. With hospitalization and lawyers involved, and assessments... aren’t you just trying to escalate things? So how much do you want? As long as it’s not excessive, we can consider it." His son was inexplicably taken into custody, and now he was anxious, growing even more irritable at He Shan’s smiling demeanor.
"Excessive?" He Shan pondered for a moment, straightened his collar, and gave a light cough, "Speaking as the brother of the person injured, what would you define as excessive? Is it excessive to go out for a stroll and end up in the hospital?"
"The incident has already happened, you..."
"Don’t rush, we’re not here to argue," the skinny middle-aged man touched his shoulder, looking somewhat headache-stricken.
"Impulsive actions by a child, it’s best if everyone sits down together to talk it over..."
"I understand, who doesn’t act impulsively sometimes?" He Shan nodded and pointed behind him, "It just so happens they were impulsive too. There’s no need to talk further, hmm... I suggest you find a lawyer early. If you don’t have one, I can also help introduce one."
"..."
"Everyone gets impulsive once, it’s quite fair, right?"
...
"What do you feel like eating?"
After the doctor’s examination, He Fang peeled an orange, stuffed a segment into Qin Guanglin’s mouth, and asked him.
"Anything... Is there a Sha County Hotel? I feel like eating steamed dumplings."
"Then I’ll go get some for you."
"Wait." Qin Guanglin stopped her, "I’m not hungry yet, let’s go in a bit."
"You haven’t eaten all day, no one would believe you’re not hungry."
He Fang rolled her eyes and stuffed another orange segment into his mouth, "Just wait, there’s one downstairs, I’ll be back quickly."
He Fang was about to leave the room when the door was pushed open from outside, and Zhao Qing came in with a food container in hand. She handed it to He Fang, who returned to the bedside and shrugged at Qin Guanglin, "No more steamed dumplings."
"Hmm? You wanted steamed dumplings?" Zhao Qing, following behind, chimed in, "You should’ve said so earlier, I could’ve brought up two servings from downstairs."
"Wow, pig’s feet are way tastier than steamed dumplings. Sister-in-law’s cooking is simply delicious."
He Fang opened the food box in amazement, complimenting Zhao Qing, then laid out the food on the table before looking at Qin Guanglin, "Do you need me to feed you?"
"No, it’s just a minor superficial injury, making it out to be something dramatic..." Qin Guanglin slowly propped himself up, nodding to Zhao Qing, "Thanks, sister-in-law."
"Thank me for what? You two haven’t eaten all day; her brother asked me to cook and bring it over."
Zhao Qing sat beside and looked around, then turned to both of them, "How are you? The injury isn’t serious, right?"
"It’s not serious, it’s nothing."
"I just saw your brother outside talking to someone; it seemed not very pleasant."
"It’d be strange if it was pleasant." He Fang scoffed, "Everything has its price."
"Jeez, why go so harsh." Zhao Qing shook her head.
"I should have known not to take you out last night." Qin Guanglin sighed, "Around here..." He paused, glanced at Zhao Qing, didn’t continue, and instead said, "Didn’t they say they caught them? Of course, there’ll be a price to pay, don’t get mad."
Yet Zhao Qing seemed to know what he was implying, nonchalantly saying, "He City’s public security is okay, but not great; this incident was just a coincidence..."
"A single coincidence could ruin someone’s life." Qin Guanglin, without looking up, spoke calmly.
Thankfully He Fang wasn’t alone when he went out, otherwise, the mere thought was frightening.
This time it was just a bottle to the head, but what about next time? Who would be the unfortunate one? Man or woman? Old or young?
Security is vital. Although it’s not fair to judge He City over a singular incident, he couldn’t help but feel a touch of revulsion.
It was fortunate that no major incident had occurred, truly a blessing among misfortunes.
"Um... what are your plans now?" Zhao Qing pursed her lips, steering the conversation away. There was no refuting that; although every place has its scoundrels, towns like He City tended to have more.
"It depends on my brother." He Fang gestured outside, "No settlement, we’ll do what needs to be done." She then turned her head to Qin Guanglin, "What do you think?"
"Absolutely."
"Alright, I’ll go see if I can lend a hand." Zhao Qing nodded, indicating she understood their stance, then got up to check on He Shan’s situation outside.
It was hard to swallow that her future brother-in-law had been hospitalized during his first visit.
"Thanks, sister-in-law."
Watching Zhao Qing leave, He Fang scooped up a spoonful of soup, blew on it twice, and brought it to Qin Guanglin’s lips, "You scared me last night."
"I’m fine, aren’t I?" Qin Guanglin smiled. "Why did you come back when I told you to go?"
"You really thought I’d leave?"
"That was the best choice at the moment; the worst they could do was beat me up while you stayed safe," he touched He Fang’s face seriously, "Next time you can’t do that, if something happens to you, I’d lose too much. Be smart, run away if things look bad. If I can fight back, I will; if not, I can run too. That’s way better than you sticking around—
You’ve seen those TV dramas, haven’t you? Bu Jingyun and his likes always get messed up by women, in such situations you’re just a liability, running far away is the biggest help you can provide."
"Tsch, you and Bu Jingyun." He Fang rolled her eyes and hummed, then suddenly burst into tears, quickly turning her head to wipe them with a finger.
"What’s wrong?!" Qin Guanglin was stunned, not understanding why she suddenly became like this, "I’m fine aren’t I? It’s just a small injury..."
He Fang took a deep breath to calm herself, her eyes rimmed red as she looked at him again, "Next time, no more acting tough, if we run, we run together."
"But that’s not—"
"You’re not Bu Jingyun, we’re both ordinary people; we must first protect ourselves. Can’t you stop thinking whether I can take it all the time?"
"No, I can’t, I’m a man and you’re a woman."
