Chapter 169: Chapter 167: Take a Good Look
"Auntie?"
He Fang looked around upon arriving at Qin Guanglin’s place and didn’t see Qin’s Mom. She sat down on the sofa and asked Qin Guanglin.
"I have no idea. She was still having her meal when I left," Qin Guanglin went to check the kitchen and saw no one, then ran to Qin’s Mom’s bedroom door and knocked twice, "Mom, are you in there?"
There was no response.
"She probably went out... She clearly said she wanted me to bring you over, but now she’s gone out herself." He helplessly returned to the living room, turned on the TV, and said, "Sit for a while, if she’s not back by... eight-thirty, we won’t wait any longer."
He had a fair guess about what Qin’s Mom might want to talk to He Fang about. It was nothing more than to bridge the gap in their relationship, or to clarify some things she believed everyone was well aware of.
Like staying overnight...
That misunderstanding was a bit too big. Although he did stay over, he had blacked out too severely. If it hadn’t been for waking up in He Fang’s bed in the morning, he probably wouldn’t even know where he had slept the previous night.
What’s more, He Fang had added fuel to the fire by leaving a mark on him, making the misunderstanding impossible to clear even if he threw himself into the Yellow River.
Qin Guanglin fiddled with the remote before handing it to He Fang, "Find whatever you like to watch."
"Doesn’t matter. It’s all the same," He Fang didn’t take it, and instead looked around before getting up and heading to Qin Guanglin’s bedroom.
"What are you doing?"
"I remember there were still some snacks here that hadn’t been finished." As she spoke, she had already walked in and spotted the chips and other snacks on the corner of the desk.
"You don’t eat properly during meals, and now you’re looking for snacks; they can’t replace a meal..."
Qin Guanglin murmured like an old mother while He Fang had already picked out a bag and brought it back to the sofa to tear open, "Are you eating?"
"No."
"Here." She pinched a chip and offered it to him.
Girlfriends can be strange sometimes. They ask if you want something, you say no, and then they give it to you anyway. It seems like just a courtesy question, no matter your answer, the end result is the same.
Watching Qin Guanglin crunch the chip, He Fang stuffed one into her mouth as well, "Does it taste good?"
"It’s okay."
"This Brazilian barbecue flavor seems like it would be more heat-inducing than cucumber flavor."
"It’s all chips, just different flavors; that’s your illusion," Qin Guanglin shook his head, unable to understand these peculiar notions of women.
"Are you eating anymore?"
"No."
"Here." He Fang offered another chip.
Men are equally strange about eating snacks. Ask if they want some, they always say no, but if you put it to their mouth, they’ll still eat. Then you ask again, they still say no, but put it in their mouth, and they eat.
Hmm, maybe he didn’t want to hurt her feelings.
A bag of chips was quickly finished between the two, leaving only some crumbs at the bottom.
That was the tastiest part in every bag of chips; He Fang stretched the bag, tilted her head back, and poured all the crumbs into her mouth, not leaving any for Qin Guanglin.
"Do you want to lick your fingers too?"
"Here, I’ll lick them for you."
"Ew, go wash your hands." Qin Guanglin tilted his head back to avoid her deliberately stretched-out fingers, "They’re oily, don’t rub it on my face."
"Throw this away for me."
He Fang handed him the empty bag and got up, hesitated while looking at the bedroom, then decided against grabbing another bag and obediently went to wash her hands.
"How come you’re by yourself? Where’s He Fang?" The living room door sounded, and Qin’s Mom came in with a small bag.
"She’s in the restroom." Qin Guanglin saw Qin’s Mom acting secretive and became curious, "Where did you go? We’ve been waiting for you for a long time."
"Of course, I had something to do."
Qin’s Mom stood behind the couch without sitting down, seemingly waiting for He Fang to come out.
"Auntie, were you looking for me?" Hearing the two talking, He Fang hurriedly washed her hands, dried them, and came out.
"Yes, there’s something..." Qin’s Mom hesitated for a moment, holding the small bag as she clomped off toward her bedroom, "Come here for a sec, let’s... ahem, have a talk."
Just as she had planned everything nicely, when she saw He Fang, Qin’s Mom felt a bit incapable of broaching the topic, as if she was making a mountain out of a molehill.
Yet, not saying anything didn’t feel right either, so she decided to call her into the bedroom.
"What’s with all the secrecy?" Qin Guanglin couldn’t help but glance sideways, "Can’t I eavesdrop?"
"Just keep watching your TV."
Qin’s Mom stepped aside to let He Fang in, then shut the door with a bang.
"Alright, Auntie, go ahead and speak," He Fang sat down upon entering the bedroom at Qin’s Mom’s gesture, looking at her curiously.
"Well... it’s just..." Qin’s Mom had forgotten the words she’d planned on the way over, and after humming and hawing, she gathered her thoughts and asked, "So, he stayed over at your place last night, right?"
"...Yeah, he did."
Hearing Qin’s Mom directly address the matter, He Fang blinked rapidly and then replied in a subdued voice with her head lowered.
She looked just like a little girl who had been caught lying.
"Hey, you said he was with classmates, hahaha..." Qin’s Mom rubbed her leg and let out a couple of dry laughs, then didn’t know what to say next.
"..."
"..."
"The thing is..." Qin’s Mom’s eyes darted around, not sure where to look, "you need to be careful..."
"...Okay."
He Fang bit her lip and stifled a smile.
It was much like the awkwardness when urging them on, and now, doing the opposite was just as awkward.
"What I mean to say is..." Qin’s Mom opened and closed her mouth several times, "that thing, you know what I mean?"
"I know."
"As long as you know, that’s my main concern. I was afraid you didn’t," she breathed a sigh of relief, feeling uncomfortably awkward, she simply handed He Fang the small black bag, "Take a good look at this when you get back. I won’t say much more, there’s really nothing to it, just worried. Knowing is good, knowing is good."
"Mhm." He Fang nodded, taking the bag, "Thank you, Auntie. If there’s nothing else, I should..."
"You’re going for a run, right? Then off you go. Running is good, really good."
Qin’s Mom watched He Fang leave and her heart lightened, relieved that she had managed the situation.
If it had been her own daughter, it would have been fine, but giving such education to someone else’s girl... too awkward, quite embarrassing.
"What did she say?" Qin Guanglin, who had been attentive to the noises from Qin’s Mom’s bedroom, saw He Fang come out and immediately lowered his voice to ask her.
"She talked about this and that," He Fang gestured with her hands, "and then she gave me this." She lifted the black bag, "Let’s go. I’ll drop it off at mine, and then we can go for a run."
Never mind that her conversation with Qin’s Mom was like playing charades, even if they’d had a proper talk, she wouldn’t have felt like recounting it to Guanglin.
"So perfunctory." Qin Guanglin, curious, tried to take the bag from her, "Let me see what’s inside."
"What’s the hurry? We’ll look at it outside."
He Fang was also curious about what Qin’s Mom had given her; the contents clearly seemed like magazines or newspapers, not any kind of safety gear.
"All so secretive." Qin Guanglin shook his head and followed He Fang out the door. They walked for a bit, turned a corner, and then stopped under a streetlamp to check the treasure Qin’s Mom had handed her.
"This is..."
Upon seeing a thin booklet inside the bag, they both paused, then He Fang wore a ’just as I thought’ expression, tossing it to Qin Guanglin, "Study it well."
"Study this for what? You don’t even..." Qin Guanglin’s voice trailed off, and he clammed up, putting the birth control pamphlet back into the bag, "I’ll keep it, might need it sooner or later... Where did my mom get this from?"
"She probably got it from a hospital or a clinic, the family planning office seems to have them too," He Fang rolled her eyes, "You keep it if you want, I don’t need it."
"It’s for you, so it should stay at your place... hey, there’s something else in here." Qin Guanglin fished a few square plastic pouches out of the black bag, and froze again.
"..."
"..."
She really was a true mother.
