Chapter 947: Chapter 947 A Bunch of Treasures
It was dinner time and, coincidentally, today was Yan Ye’s birthday. Feng Yuzhi, clad in an apron, was busy preparing a sumptuous feast in the kitchen.
The moment she opened the door, she was a bit surprised to see several young people standing at the entrance.
Among them, she recognized An Hao but had no idea who the others were.
"What’s this..." Feng Yuzhi asked with a hint of confusion.
"Auntie, it’s like this," An Hao explained briefly, "We’re all students of Teacher Yan, and we heard it’s his birthday today, so we came to celebrate with him. These two male students have been under Teacher Yan’s care since they entered the school, so on the verge of their internships, they wanted to take this opportunity to express their gratitude to Teacher Yang."
"Oh, I see, please come in!" Feng Yuzhi hurriedly made way for the students to enter.
An Hao, living close to home, decided she must first go back to greet her in-laws, to let them know she wouldn’t be home for dinner tonight, so they needn’t prepare her meal.
By the time she returned, Yan Ye’s house was bustling with activity.
The arrival of these few people filled the living room to the brim.
Three people had come to celebrate Yan Ye’s birthday, but instead of surrounding Yan Ye, they were all busily chattering around Yan Luquan.
She went over to see Cheng Yue sitting opposite Yan Luquan, engaged in a fierce game of chess.
Gu Shuangshuang and Li Zhi were giving unsolicited commands from the side.
"Jump the knight! Jump the knight! Then bring out the rook!"
"Don’t listen to Li Zhi’s nonsense, that’s too slow, go for a double cannon attack straight away."
Cheng Yue, frowning in thought and silent, made sure every move captured an opposing piece or constrained his opponent, leaving no chance for a counterattack.
The two were jabbering endlessly, until Yan Luquan’s ears could hardly stand it anymore: "Good heavens, you two little imps. ’To watch the game without uttering a sound is the mark of a gentleman.’ Do you understand that principle?"
"I’m not a gentleman, I’m a lady," said Gu Shuangshuang.
"You’ve only heard that saying, but I’m not sure if you’ve heard the next one," Li Zhi asked Yan Luquan.
"What saying?" Yan Luquan asked, all the while fending off the strong offensive from his opponent.
"That’s ’to see someone in distress and do nothing is the mark of a scoundrel,’ haha!"
"Alright, you certainly have a smart mouth! Your specious arguments are quite something," Yan Luquan said with a laugh.
Yan Ye watched this scene, shaking his head with a smile: "What a bunch of characters."
"Uncle, you look very happy today," An Hao turned around with a smile and said to Yan Ye, "You’re always complaining that your father doesn’t play chess with you."
"I’m not really into it," Yan Ye turned around to pour two glasses of water, handing one to An Hao, "I’m really tired after a day of work and want to relax, not spend more energy thinking."
"So your father has some complaints." Recalling her own father-in-law, An Hao laughed along, "Every time Qin Jian comes back, the first thing he does is get dragged into a game of chess by his father."
"I guess the result is usually that Qin Jian wins."
The smile at the corner of An Hao’s mouth grew wider: "Indeed! ’The student surpasses the master!’"
"That’s why old Ning gets addicted to playing chess with his son, the more they play, the more exciting it becomes. And me? My son doesn’t want to play chess with me. It’s so hard just to call him over, and once in a blue moon when he does come, I lose! It’s disheartening, disheartening," Yan Luquan chuckled.
"Dad, then don’t call me to play chess next time!" He preferred the peace and quiet.
