Chapter 1259: Chapter 1259: Bite to Death and Not Let Go
"Sister-in-law! I heard the company commander is having guests at home today, so we thought we’d join in the fun and send the division commander off," Hen Zhiyuan said with a smile.
Zhang Jianguo hadn’t invited Hen Zhiyuan and his wife. He had some opinions about this deputy company commander, and besides, they didn’t share the same path, nor did they plan together.
What Zhang Lanxiang hadn’t expected was that this thick-skinned couple had actually shown up uninvited.
There’s a saying, ’You cannot slap a smiling face,’ so even though Zhang Lanxiang was displeased, she still greeted them with a smile, "Come in. Jianguo and Qin Jian are in the living room. Go ahead. I am busy preparing the meal; it will be ready soon."
"Thank you, sister-in-law," Hen Zhiyuan went towards the living room. Ma Mei also started to follow him into the living room, but he stopped her, "Why don’t you go help in the kitchen? Sister-in-law can’t manage alone."
"Ah, alright," Ma Mei said as she rolled up her sleeves and entered the kitchen.
She saw An Hao there, who looked much healthier compared to a few days ago, and not as dejected as Ma Mei had anticipated.
It was definitely different from her niece, Ruan Fangfang, who had switched places for her internship and came to complain to her once a week.
An Hao had already seen Ma Mei at the door, but she didn’t even want to acknowledge her.
If it weren’t for her, she wouldn’t still be trying to shake off a black mark against her name.
"Sister-in-law... is there anything I can help with?" Ma Mei also chose to ignore An Hao’s presence and walked in directly to speak to Zhang Lanxiang.
"Can you cook braised fish?" Zhang Lanxiang turned around and asked her.
Ma Mei blankly shook her head: "I can’t. I’m not good at cooking, but I can still handle picking and chopping vegetables."
Zhang Lanxiang lifted her chin and said, "Look, I have everything ready here. There’s no room for you here. You better go out."
The meaning of these words couldn’t be clearer!
It was clearly a rejection.
Ma Mei gave an awkward smile and turned back to the living room. The three men there were discussing matters from their service days, and she had no opportunity to interrupt.
Seeing Ma Mei sitting unhelpfully, Hen Zhiyuan poked at Ma Mei, nudging her to go back to the kitchen.
This time, when she went back to the kitchen, Ma Mei refused to leave, standing by Zhang Lanxiang and offering her help, "Sister-in-law, let me help you. Otherwise, our Old Hen really won’t let me off the hook. I’ve been home every day this month, and he’s already displeased with me."
Zhang Lanxiang naturally knew why Ma Mei was resting at home. Since she had brought it up, Zhang Lanxiang followed the topic, "You’ve only been resting for a month. Consider it a vacation. Poor An Hao, she doesn’t even have a chance to intern because of that issue! Do you realize how tough it is for her?"
Ma Mei gave a very unnatural smile and said, "An Hao is really talented, a real asset if cultivated well! But, she is still a novice! So, mistakes are inevitable. This time, though, it was truly unfortunate. The error was too big."
In her words, she alluded to the mistake being An Hao’s, because she couldn’t admit it was hers.
Otherwise, her career would be ruined.
Even if things remained unsettled in the end, she wasn’t worried, for An Hao was still carrying the burden. As long as she didn’t confess, she didn’t believe anyone could find out.
With time, the incident would fade, but everyone would still remember, there was a trainee doctor named An Hao who caused that accident.
