Surviving the Apocalypse: All I Want Is to Find a Husband -
Chapter 96: The Armory
Chapter 96: The Armory
"Cut the crap." Tian looked at Medeia in annoyance. "Tell them to stop following me."
Medeia rolled her eyes because Tian didn’t want to accept her ’sincere’ intentions. She darted her eyes toward the young doctors, saying, "You heard him. If he passes out again after this, don’t try to help him."
"No! No! Don’t listen to her!" Ren was trying to convince the doctors. "My brother is not a bad person. He’s just grumpy all the time..."
While Ren busied himself narrating tales of his brother’s hidden kindness to the doctors, Medeia turned to Tian and asked, "Where are the others?"
"Simon and Harry are sealing the dungeon door so the rotten smell from the corpses won’t spread outside," Tian continued, "while Lucian is checking the weapons in the armory."
Before Medeia could respond, Tian spoke again, "The armory is in the east wing of the base."
Medeia smiled because she could guess what she wanted. "Got it."
Without wasting any time, Medeia turned and began heading toward the east wing.
She didn’t know the exact number of weapons stored in the Warstock base, but she guessed it would exceed hundreds.
"Lucian!" she called out, tilting her head to peek through the slightly open door of the armory.
The room walls were made out of strong steel and the air smelled of oil and metal. Rows of shelves lined the walls, each containing: rifles, pistols, grenades, and crates of ammunition stacked to the ceiling.
But her eyes immediately landed on Lucian. He was at the far end of the room, crouched beside a large crate. As he heard Medeia’s voice, he lifted his head toward her, smiling, "Here you are. Did you have a good sleep?"
"I don’t know." Medeia approached him. "Did I kick you while I was sleeping?"
"No, you didn’t." Lucian chuckled. "You slept as soundly as a kitten."
"Like hell I’m like a kitten." She crouched beside him, looking at the crate Lucian had been inspecting. "What do we have here?"
Lucian tapped a clipboard on the crate. "I’ve been taking stock. So far, I’ve counted seventy rifles, forty-five pistols, thirty crates of ammunition, and a handful of grenades. Still more crates to go through, though."
Medeia narrowed her eyes, looking at him suspiciously. "You must not have had a good night’s sleep, right?"
If he had counted that far without missing a single detail, it was clear he hadn’t rested properly. Lucian avoided her gaze, busying himself with writing down the number of ammunition boxes.
"I slept enough," he said lightly. "Don’t worry."
Liar.
The bed beside her was so cold when she woke up, meaning that he had been out of the room for such a long time. Sometimes she wondered, what made it so hard for Lucian to sleep soundly all night?
"I’ve planned to bring all these weapons and ammunition to Red Canyon." Lucian immediately changed the topic. "There are twelve wheeler trucks in the garage that we can use to transport everything."
Medeia rested her head on top of her hands. "What about the tanks? Should we bring them too?"
Lucian paused for a moment, considering the question. "The tanks would be useful for us, but we can’t risk the extra attention they’ll draw. Beside monsters in the road, we have to be alert of a lot of bandits."
Lucian could even guess there were bandits who had already targeted the Red Star Alliance base since they moved from the village.
"Facing the bandits is going to be tricky," Lucian continued, "The tanks might be powerful, but they’re slow and they’ll be easy targets in open areas."
"Besides that, they would think this base is not operating anymore and they’ll try to rob this place before we can move all of the resources in here."
The bandits didn’t have the courage to rob from the Warstock Base because they knew better than to deal with Orlon and his colonel.
Hence, if they knew all the soldiers and the general were dead, then they would immediately try to take over the Warstock base.
It would be troublesome for them.
"If we want to pretend this base is still operating, then we have to create fake activity around the base." Medeia suggested, "Maybe leave a few vehicles running, lights on, and make sure the guard posts look manned even if they’re not."
"Or maybe, we can leave a few people here," Medeia suggested thoughtfully, "How about Tian and Simon? I’d like to ask Harry, but his father would definitely go feral if his son doesn’t return soon. And... maybe we should let a doctor stay here to monitor Tian?"
Lucian nodded. "Tian’s good with weapons, especially guns. He could help secure the base while we’re gone. And Simon is a reliable choice too. As for Harry... I agree. His father would cause too much trouble if we kept him here."
The last time Medeia returned to Red Star base, Chief Eldric wouldn’t stop bothering her and asked so many questions of his son. If she had to experience it again, her head would explode.
"We can bring Nico here later and ask him to make the shield, so we don’t have to guard the base directly," Medeia said, "I don’t want anyone stealing the tanks from us."
If something bad happens in the future, then the tanks can be a great help for them.
Lucian nodded in agreement. "Yes, we can do that. But sometimes I find it a nuisance that we can only go through the shield if Nico opens and closes it manually." He paused for a moment, thinking it over. "It’s a bit of a limitation, don’t you think?"
Medeia considered his words carefully. The shield was a great asset for them, but Lucian had a point. If Nico wasn’t around, they would be stuck behind that invisible barrier, unable to leave or enter the base without him.
"The shield’s great for our base." Medeia sighed. "But you’re right. It’s not practical if we’re going out too often, or if something goes wrong and we need to leave quickly, especially if Nico is not with us."
That poor kid probably won’t be able to sleep if the base is active for 24 hours in the future.
Lucian, "We might have to rethink the way to protect our base. It will be more efficient if we don’t rely too much on Nico." He continued, "Besides, I don’t want him to be stuck at the base forever without being able to go anywhere else in the future."
It was easy to manage Nico when he was still a little kid, but he probably wouldn’t want to listen to their every word once he became a teenager.
Medeia did not even want to imagine having to deal with an irritating teenage boy in the future.
"I gave a blueprint to build our base to Jose a while ago. Maybe we can discuss our fortress more with him later."
"A blueprint? You made it on your own?"
Medeia smiled proudly. She was finally able to brag about that blueprint to Lucian. "Yes, I designed it myself. It’s not that hard though."
Lucian was clearly impressed. "Not that hard? I bet it took you a lot of effort to come up with all the details." He said, "You should have asked me to help you. My father was an architect, so I’m very familiar with the blueprints. Perhaps we can design the new fortress together later."
Medeia’s face immediately turned pale. She had gotten the blueprint from the system, so she wasn’t able to make another design by herself.
Pretending to be a great architect my ass, Lucian probably understood the blueprints better than she did.
She shouldn’t have lied in the first place.
"Y-yeah, we can design it together later." Medeia laughed awkwardly before she changed to another topic. "About the doctor who will stay here... What about Joy? I think she is calm enough to stay here with them."
Even though she seemed a bit scared of Medeia before, she was still able to maintain her composure, so Medeia thought Joy wouldn’t panic easily and could work under pressure.
"If you think she is the right person, then I don’t doubt your judgment," Lucian said.
This man.
Medeia finally realized he indeed followed every word she said to him and never doubted her even for a second.
’Doesn’t that mean he’s my loyal follower? My mission is done, right?’
[The system asks you to have loyal ’followers’, Host. So you need more than one person.]
’How can I prove that someone is already my loyal follower? Lucian is easy to spot because I spend more time with him.’
[Then, you have to spend more time with other people too, Host.]
[Humans are social creatures. You can’t spend all your time with just one person.]
’I prefer quality over quantity.’
[The system prefers both of those.]
Medeia grunted inwardly because the system was so stingy and hard to please. If only someone offered her to change the system, then she would immediately do it.
