Surviving the Apocalypse: All I Want Is to Find a Husband -
Chapter 93: Manipulate The Young Doctors
Chapter 93: Manipulate The Young Doctors
"Are you going to kill us too?" asked one of the doctors. She seemed younger than the rest, so Medeia thought the doctors had taken on apprentices to continue their work in the future.
Well, in that way, it would be easy for Medeia to choose the doctors who deserved to stay at the base.
Medeia looked at the young doctor. "That depends," she said, "have you ever touched the specimens with your hands?"
The young doctor immediately shook his head. "No, no! My friends and I have only lived here for six months, so we have not been allowed to enter the dungeon yet."
"Please, I beg you, let me and my friends live. They kidnapped us from our shelter and forced us to help with their research." Tears rolled down her face. "I promise I’ll never touch the medicine again if you let me live."
Medeia crossed one leg and bowed her head. The young girl was shaking with fear, but her voice remained steady.
She also made sure to talk about her past in order to gain some sympathy from Medeia and Lucian.
This girl is smart.
’System, I want to know her ability.’
[Check her status ...]
[Name: Joy Allen
Age: 20
Ability: Life Spectrum Vision (Grade-A) — Sees the ’life spectrum’ of any living being, showing their health status, disease progression, or injuries as colors.]
Medeia had never heard of such an ability before. She couldn’t heal anyone, but she could diagnose their illnesses and injuries just by looking at them.
Her ability was basically a mini system.
’I think she’ll be more useful than you,’ said Medeia to the system.
[Host, it’s not the system’s fault for not being able to show everyone’s status.]
Medeia rolled her eyes. ’Yeah, yeah ... it’s because someone has restricted your access.’
The young girl would probably be very useful for their base, but Medeia had to make sure she wouldn’t betray them in the future.
Her eyes moved around the young doctors, then landed on a handsome young man with black hair and gray eyes. He sat in the back row, always trying to avoid Medeia’s gaze.
’That young man is handsome enough and looks like a kind person, why don’t you offer him as my potential husband?’
If Medeia remembered it right, the system had said that she could have many potential husbands before deciding to marry one man.
However, after she chose Lucian as her potential husband, the system stopped offering her handsome men.
[Why would the system offer them if you were going to reject them, Host?]
She encouraged the system. ’You won’t know my answer unless you try.’’
[The system has detected a potential handsome, kind husband!]
[Name: Ulric Cantrell
Age: 21
Ability: Pain Extraction (Grade-S) — Absorbs and removes physical or emotional pain from others, leaving them calm and comfortable.
Handsome Value: 86/100
Kind-Hearted Value: 82/100]
[Do you want to accept him as your potential husband? (Yes/No)]
Without thinking, Medeia immediately chose ’No’.
[Why? You said you wanted the system to offer you a new potential husband.]
’When did I say I wanted a new potential husband? I just asked you to offer him to me.’
The real reason was that Medeia wanted to see the value of his kindness so that she could judge the nature of the young doctors who had lived in the same refugee camp as him.
It was not accurate, but usually, people tended to have the same value when they stayed in the same place for a long time.
Besides, his ability was really useful!
Tilly could also remove someone’s pain, but it was only a Grade-B ability, and she couldn’t remove emotional pain.
This young man was a treasure and a perfect physiatrist for the people in the doomsday.
"How many people are from the same shelter as you?" Medeia finally spoke back to Joy.
Joy was a bit startled because she thought Medeia had decided to kill them all. "There are four of us. Ulric, Keith, Melody, and me."
"Why did the Warstock take young people from your refuge? Is your refuge a medical center or what?"
Medeia had only detected the abilities of Joy and Ulric, but both of them had an ability related to the medical field. Therefore, she guessed that their base must have something to do with that kind of field.
"Yes." Joy seemed a little hesitant to talk about her refuge, but if she didn’t explain it, she was afraid that Medeia would kill her and her friends. "Our shelter is ... it’s in a hospital. A big one. It used to be a state-of-the-art medical research center before everything fell apart."
That explained a lot."
Although the research center was no longer active, there were still many journals and medical research in the building. Besides, Medeia could guess that there were still professors and doctors in that research center.
However, it would be difficult to brainwash old people, so Orlon decided to kidnap the young ones instead.
"So ... what’s your name?" Medeia pretended not to know anything about her.
"Joy. My name is Joy Allen."
"All right, Joy." Medeia looked her straight in the eye. "I want to give you and your friends a chance to live."
The youngsters gasped and immediately lifted their faces to see Medeia. They hadn’t expected to hear such words from her mouth.
"Thank you!" Joy’s voice was filled with relief and happiness. She turned to look at her friends, who looked as stunned as she was.
"Don’t thank me yet. This isn’t charity, Joy. I don’t do anything for free." Medeia cut her happiness off.
Joy swallowed and her momentary relief vanished instantly. "What ... what do you want from us?"
"Simple." Medeia smiled. "I want you all to work at my base. We don’t have any doctors yet, so I think you and your friends can fill that spot."
"But ... but we—"
"You want to go back to your old base? Oh, Joy. People like you and your friends won’t be able to get there without the help of others." Medeia’s voice was soft but filled with gentle manipulation. "There are a lot of monsters on the road, and the only thing you can do is diagnose diseases and make medicine."
"You will definitely die if I release you into the wild."
Her words were harsh, but it was the truth.
Just by looking at their skinny bodies, Medeia was sure that they were not good at fighting or using weapons. Moreover, their abilities were not the combat type, so they could only cry or run when a dangerous monster approached them.
"Do ... Do you also experiment on humans?"
Medeia chuckled. "No, we’re not that kind of people, dear." She continued, "I just want you to become a doctor, that’s all I need."
If she wanted to grow medicinal herbs, people like Joy and her friends would be the right people to take care of the herbs and turned them into medicines
"Of course, you won’t work for free. I’ll provide decent living places, food that’s better than canned goods, and a stress-free place to work." Medeia said, "I’ll also give you a vacation every six months."
She added, "I can also ask some hunters to escort you to your old base whenever you like."
Joy looked at her in disbelief. Those kinds of offers were too good to be true after all. "Why would you offer us all that? People like us aren’t exactly in a position to bargain ... or to be trusted, for that matter."
A doctor was able to be a healer and a killer at the same time. Hence, people would not usually entrust that role to someone they just met.
"Trust?" Medeia laughed. "I never said that I trust you." She leaned toward her. "I simply just want you to work with me and if you dare to betray me or plan to kill me or whatever ... this scary old man will immediately turn your body into dust."
Joy moved her eyes to the scary old man standing right next to Medeia. But this scary old man turned out to be a handsome man with a kind smile on his face.
However, Joy had seen what he did to Orlon before and she knew very well not to try to challenge his ability.
"So, what’s your answer?" Medeia pretended to look at the clock. "I don’t have a lot of time, so I want you to make that decision in ... one minute."
Her body was already screaming at her to lie down on the bed, so Medeia did not want to waste her time by talking with them any longer.
She just wanted to sleep in Lucian’s arms immediately.
Joy swallowed hard, her eyes darting between Medeia and the ’scary old man’ who clearly wasn’t old at all. "What choice do I have if I refuse?"
Medeia replied nonchalantly. "I will release you and your friends into the wild. What is the worst that can happen? Maybe a monster will be kind enough to kill you before it eats your body."
