Chapter 49: The First Step to Build A New Base
Medeia would be a fool to say no. She had felt like she had returned to hell when Lucian had left her, so from now on she would follow him wherever he went.
"Then let’s go together," Medeia replied.
She leaned her back against the seat, settling into a comfortable position for the next few hours.
She thought they would meet more monsters on the way, but surprisingly the road went smoothly, so smooth that Medeia suspected that Lucian had killed most of the monsters on the road in the last few days.
No wonder his face looked a bit pale from exhaustion.
He might be strong, but that didn’t mean he was invincible.
"Lucian, you have to sleep when we arrive at the Red Canyon."
"I don’t think I can do that." Lucian refused her order, "I have to take care of these new people."
Medeia, "Lucian, I’m with you now, so let me take care of everything while you rest."
Chief Eldric and Harry had helped Lucian a lot in the last few days, but they were nothing like Medeia.
They may have had experience ruling the village, but Medeia had the ability to make people listen to every word she spoke.
Even the most stubborn would eventually follow her order.
She was truly a natural-born leader.
Lucian, "Maybe just for a couple of hours?"
"Got it." Medeia said, "I’ll give you a few hours rest."

Medeia’s eyes widened as the car drove into the base. The base that once looked like it came out of hell was now becoming more lively.
The main building had not yet been completely repaired, but the villagers had used the base material to build temporary shelters.
A small farm sprawled near the springs. No crops had been planted yet, but at least Naomi had planted a lot of fertility stones to enrich the soil.
Medeia’s jaw dropped slightly. "This ... this is incredible," she whispered as she got out of the car.
In just five days, a lot had changed at the base, it even looked better than before.
Lucian glanced at her with a hint of pride. "The first group has been working hard these past few days."
The villagers had worked hard, but Lucian had worked harder than they had. Without his ability to manipulate the terrain, they probably wouldn’t have been able to build a decent farm or temporary shelters.
"Medeia, can I escort them to their new shelter?" Lucian said, "I promise I will take a proper nap afterwards."
His words made him sound like a husband afraid of his frightening wife.
"Okay, but make it quick," Medeia replied.
Lucian gave her a quick nod. Without wasting any time, he turned to the group of villagers, his commanding yet gentle voice instructing them to follow him to the temporary shelters.
"Medeia, welcome back!" Matilda ran toward her, carrying a basket of potatoes. Her face was brighter than the last time Medeia had seen her.
Medeia, "How are you these days, Matilda?"
"My life has never been better!" A genuine smile appeared on her face. "After years of eating disgusting canned food, the girls and I can finally eat fresh vegetables. Dr. Rory and Sister Jeanne also help me take care of the pregnant women and monitor their health."
At first, Matilda and the other women were worried that the villagers would treat them as badly as the Stormclad, but when they arrived in Red Canyon, they immediately offered them plenty of fresh food.
When the second group arrived, things got even better. The kids greeted them happily and gave them their old clothes for their unborn children. After experiencing so much sorrow and a harsh environment, they were finally able to see the lights of the world again.
Those kind children were the embodiment of the kindness of the villagers.
People tended to oppress the weak, especially children, so when Matilda saw that the children were healthy and showed no signs of abuse, she was certain that the villagers had taken good care of them.
"Thank you." Matilda’s voice softened. "If it weren’t for you and Mr. Lucian, I might never have been able to give all these things to Penelope and others."
Medeia shook her head. "This is your choice, Matilda. You and others are the ones who choose this life."
If Matilda had chosen to leave the base like Sharon, she might not have been able to have such a decent life.
"But still, your kindness is one of the reasons we get to experience this kind of life." Matilda said, "You are very kind, Medeia."
Medeia’s lips curled into a strained smile. Deep in her heart she disagreed with Matilda’s words.
Kind? Medeia thought bitterly. I just did all of it to gain more points.
She had never dared to think of herself as a kind person. Kindness didn’t manipulate a bunch of men into killing each other. A kind person would never devour humans’ souls to become stronger.
Maybe it would be better if she was called practical instead of kind.
"It’s nothing, really." Medeia replied hesitantly. She didn’t want to talk about it anymore, so she tried to distract Matilda. "Can you give me a tour of this new base?"
Matilda nodded quickly. "Sure! But let me get these potatoes to the kitchen first."
"Kitchen? You have a proper kitchen now?"
The Stormclad only ate canned food, so they never built a proper kitchen at the base. Medeia knew this because she and Lucian had toured the base before they left.
"Oh, you would be surprised. Tilly used to run a family restaurant, so she can cook a lot of delicious food." Matilda smiled. "Well, she hasn’t cooked for a long time, but I can guarantee that her food still tastes amazing!"
Maybe it tasted amazing because they hadn’t eaten delicious foods for so long.
But, she decided to not speak those words out loud.
After going to the kitchen, Matilda guided her to walk around the base. There were still many rooms that needed repairment, but it was decent enough for now.
"Oh, Medeia. I heard that you and Lucian will distribute the water supplies to the Junk Garden first." Matilda suggested, "Maybe it will be better if you make your appearance ugly."
