Chapter 117: Oddly Familiar (1)

"Is that a spring?!" Celestine exclaimed, pointing at the spring near the farm. "You actually have fresh water here?"

Without waiting for an answer from Medeia or Lucian, Celestine immediately ran toward the spring. She dipped her hands into the cool water, feeling its freshness spread from her fingertips through her entire body.

The water sparkled as the sunlight hit it, making it look breathtakingly beautiful.

Celestine fell silent for a moment, letting the wind play with strands of her hair. For years, the only things she had seen were ruins and devil mosses. Hence, she couldn’t help but think that maybe this place wasn’t so bad after all.

The water, the farm, the fresh air, everything felt so unreal that she began to cry.

This place seemed like a haven in the middle of hell.

Seraphina walked closer to her, patting her shoulder. "Well, maybe we can try living here for a while."

Medeia watched them from a distance, wondering if everyone would react the same way upon seeing the base, especially those who had survived by constantly moving from place to place.

The base wasn’t perfect, but for some, it might feel like a perfect place to live.

Medeia might not be able to let everyone stay here, but if she did, the refugees would see her as a savior.

In that way, she could fulfill the system’s desire for her to be a good person without completely changing who she was.

At that moment, Medeia realized something: the system was ultimately guiding her to become a kind person, not just forcing her.

But who knew what the system’s true purpose was?

After all, it was just a machine, a damn machine controlled by other beings with higher authority.

"Let’s just stay here for the night, okay?" Lucian knelt beside Celestine, patting her back to calm her down. "Tomorrow, we can discuss this further. If you really don’t want to stay here, I’ll take you back to the Junk Garden."

"No!" Medeia suddenly shouted, but she quickly pretended to cough to cover up the awkwardness. "I mean, Richard had a good reason for bringing them here. If you take them back, it’s like you’re slapping him in the face."

Medeia paused for a moment to arrange her words. "How about this, stay here for a week first? Richard will be coming here next week anyway. If you still don’t want to stay, you can protest to your brother directly."

In truth, Medeia just wanted Richard to speed up the construction of the base. If Lucian took them back, not only would Richard see them as a nuisance, but it might also delay the construction even further.

So, please, my dearest, don’t be kind and gentlemanly for once!

"But if you really ... really don’t like living here, just tell me, even if it’s before the week is up," Lucian said to Celestine. "The choice is yours, after all."

Medeia hit her forehead with her palm, muttering, "Unbelievable. Of course, he’d say that." She watched as Celestine crossed her arms, glaring at Lucian as though she was deciding whether to throw a tantrum or not.

"Fine," Celestine huffed, flipping her hair dramatically. "But don’t expect me to be happy about this arrangement. I’ll stay for a week, but only because I decided to, not because you told me to."

Lucian nodded and smiled at his cousin. "Of course. I’m glad to have you here."

Even though Celestine said that in an annoying tone, in reality, she and Vivienne were the ones who seemed the happiest here.

In less than fifteen minutes, they decided to step into The Spring. They played with the water, soaking their clothes in the process.

Laughter bubbled up between them as they splashed each other like carefree children, ignoring the cold droplets trickling down their skin.

They even pulled Lucian to join them and forbade him from leaving. Meanwhile, on the other side, Seraphina and the others brought their belongings to their tent, accompanied by Medeia.

"I know you don’t really want to help us," accused Seraphina as Medeia escorted them to their tents.

Because of the limited number of tents, for now, they could only occupy two tents until the others finished setting up new ones for them.

"What do you mean by that, my dear cousin?" Medeia asked as she sat on the air mattress, flashing a calm smile at her. "I’m truly worried about all of you. Besides, Vivienne and Celestine seem to be secretly enjoying this place."

Medeia turned her head toward the spring, watching Celestine as she playfully attempted to drown Lucian.

She hissed, unsure whether they were just playing with him or silently plotting his demise, especially since he had planned something with Richard without telling them.

"They do like this place," Seraphina couldn’t help but sigh. When she saw Camille and Odette heading toward another tent, she added, "I’ve talked about this matter with Richard before, and I agreed to let them move here while I’ll stay in the Junk Garden. However, I didn’t expect him to bring us here by force."

"That boy is really a mess," Seraphina muttered, sitting beside Medeia. "Instead of being angry, I’m actually kind of worried about him."

"He’s a 30-year-old man now," Medeia replied. "He can take care of himself."

"I know," Seraphina smiled. "But as an older sister, it’s hard for me not to worry about my little brother."

She was the eldest. Therefore, she always thought that she had to be responsible for the lives and well-being of all her siblings.

"Even though you’ve moved here, it doesn’t mean you won’t be able to see Richard again. Our alliance is working together, so we’ll definitely meet often, at least once a week."

"You’re right. Maybe I’m just worrying too much."

Medeia stood up. "Did you bring a thicker jacket? The night will get colder here. I’m not sure if there’s enough winter clothing for all of you."

"I wasn’t the one who packed my bag, but I guess Richard will make sure we have warm clothes," Seraphina said, opening her bag. "Let’s check it first."

Medeia opened another bag, but one of the bags didn’t contain clothes; instead, it was filled with old magazines.

The colors of the magazines were somewhat faded, but Medeia could still clearly see the images on the covers. She tilted her head and brought one closer to her face.

The man on the cover seemed oddly familiar.
