—
Ten minutes later.
Gongsun Ce massaged his sore abdomen, his face a picture of misery as he weaved through the racks of clothes.
He figured his friend’s anger had mostly subsided and cautiously asked, “Respected Miss, may I humbly inquire why you are angry?”
“Why, the self-proclaimed clever Ah Ce can ponder that himself.”
Qin Qianbai sat with her back to him at the clothing store’s seating area, radiating a fearsome oppressiveness.
It was as if a retired master hidden in the mountains for years had their murderous intent awakened.
Just approaching her conjured the illusion of blades upon one’s body; the human instinct for survival screamed deafening alarms!
High school girls nearby whispered to each other, “They must have had a fight…” “Definitely a fight.” “Shh, don’t gossip about other people’s private matters.”
Stop it, Miss can hear you.
She’s already fuming, and hearing you use the term “couple” will only make her angrier, more enraged!
Gongsun Ce realized he had to do something for his sake and for the innocent bystanders.
He picked out a pink wool sweater and a matching pale yellow jacket, bracing himself against the pressure as he approached with a forced smile, “Miss, what do you think about this set…”
“I don’t like it.”
You didn’t even look before rejecting it!
Are you picking fights on purpose?!
Gongsun Ce nearly lost his temper, but he strived to suppress the urge to roar.
A man who lashes out at a comrade with whom he has faced life and death over trifles is undoubtedly the scum of the scum.
Be patient, be patient.
Don’t act like a rude thug…
tolerate a woman’s occasional irrational behavior…
A mature man should resolve issues appropriately, not scream and shout like a child…
He rubbed his hair forcefully, pondering the way out of this deadlock.
Qiluo thought all he needed to do was earnestly pick a suitable outfit if Miss wasn’t angry, which should be the right answer.
So, the question changed from “how to pick clothes she likes” to “how to show her his sincerity.”
…This shouldn’t actually be difficult to resolve, right?
Gongsun Ce made up his mind.
He spent a long time looking at the freestanding clothes racks and chose a new outfit: a black long-sleeved checkered shirt with a purple-patterned lantern skirt featuring cute white lace.
He thought it had a girlish feel.
It would look terribly out of place on Shiyu Ling, but should suit Qin Qianbai.
“Miss, what do you think about this set?”
“I don’t like it.”
Again dismissed without a glance, but this time Gongsun Ce had a solution in mind.
He faced the invisible pressure head-on, approaching the girl and pretending to be deflated.
“This one’s no good either.
Sorry, sorry, I was just imagining how cute you’d be in it, but I neglected the requirements.
Just a moment, I’ll look for something else—”
Qin Qianbai looked up at him.
“…Wait.”
Good!
There’s a chance!
Suppressing his joy, Gongsun Ce played dumb, “What is it?”
“What does Ah Ce think of this outfit?”
“I truly think it’s quite cute, and you’d probably look good in it…
but since you won’t try it, I can’t verify my guess,” he said earnestly.
“I can’t use a tailor’s dummy to simulate it, that would be too impolite.”
The invisible pressure weakened, Miss Qin took the clothes, “Then, I’ll go try it on.”
Gongsun Ce silently wiped the sweat from his brow, thinking to himself that this should clinch it.
From the side came the high school girls’ comments: “He’s so patient.” “To forgive just like that…” “Must be first love to let it go so easily.”
Patient my ass.
Mr.
Gongsun has already taken a few punches today.
Why did he so easily make the promise to take care of her…
The phrase ‘asking for trouble’ suits him well.
Reflecting on the past, Gongsun Ce couldn’t help but feel nostalgic about his immaturity.
A few minutes later, as Gongsun Ce snapped back from his reminiscence, ready to pull out his pocket watch to check the time, the expressionless girl finally came out of the fitting room.
“How does it look?”
—
Three years ago in Supibia, Gongsun Ce had visited the Morton Royal Museum once.
Three hundred years earlier, as seafaring came of age, Morton’s merchants followed their fleets overseas.
They presented the royal family with treasures from around the world, trading for honors and statuses that money couldn’t buy.
These rare items from every corner of the globe were once cherished by generations of royalty and now generously placed within that grand and resplendent museum.
He followed closely behind the Knight of the Dawn, walking in the castle-turned-museum.
He tried hard to look unimpressed, to show off as someone who had seen everything and was not intrigued by the old stuff here.
Yet, his prying eyes undoubtedly betrayed his inner awe and admiration.
He observed the huge mural that dominated the dome, nobles’ armor engraved with complex patterns, the exquisitely intricate bone carvings of the ancient Ustus tribes, as well as jade and bronzes from the Empire…
These were items that he, snatched to the skies as a child, had never seen or even heard of before.
Among them, the most impactful were the dolls crafted by Morton’s artisans.
The dolls, with proportions close to that of real people, clad in faded classical attire, stood motionless in glass cabinets, their expressionless, exquisite faces observing the passing tourists with an unreal gentleness, perfectly embodying their inanimate identity.
