Chapter 35: Maybe if it was Gold

"What in the..." Dawn winced, looking at the windows floating in front of him.

[Young Hero while taking a stroll in the forest, you encountered a damsel in distress. Your time has come to shine; show the world how powerful you are and let the world bask in the glory of the Superhero class.]

[You have the following choices.]

[1- Immediately go and save the people who called for help. Reward - 3 Silver Grade stat crystals.]

[2 - Ignore the call for help for the time being, understanding that you are still too weak and can’t take unnecessary risks. After all, it’s not the world which is in danger. Reward - 3 Iron grade stat crystals.]

Eh!

He could even be rewarded! Nice, he thought the system wanted him to save them for nothing.

Dawn’s eyes lit up. However, he also couldn’t help but become a little wary. These blue windows were trying to manipulate him a little.

The rewards were nice, but... why did the system feel like a sleazy merchant trying to sell me a ’great deal’?

"Anyways..."

Now that the rewards were in front of him, he decided to take a look; after all, three Silver Strength Crystals were too hard to ignore.

Without hesitating, he chose the first option. After his choice, the window automatically disappeared.

Immediately he curled his body upwards and grabbed Fiona’s hand like a caterpillar, using her hand as a rope to climb to her shoulder.

He pointed his small wooden sword in the direction where the voice came from and said in a heroic voice:

"Let’s go, big sister! Someone is in danger. As a young master of the Skylar family, how can I ignore a plea for help?"

"If word spreads that I turned a blind eye to the cry for help, wouldn’t people think my family was filled with a bunch of cowards?"

Dawn’s voice was a little forceful as he presented his argument; he was worried that she might not agree with his words.

After saying those words, he stopped and looked at Fiona’s face only to realize something.

Fiona had fallen completely silent; her face seemed to have turned into an ice sculpture.

Just as Dawn was about to call out again, Fiona nodded her head, albeit a little stiffly like a robot. Looking at this scene, Dawn’s expression turned slightly weird.

Her expression was unreadable, but inside, a small part of her felt... proud? No. That was ridiculous. He was just a child. And yet...

Just as he was about to say something, Fiona’s body suddenly accelerated.

"Wait..." Dawn felt his head jerk backward from the sudden acceleration.

He grabbed her shoulder tightly, afraid of falling down. The world in front of his eyes suddenly seemed to have blurred; the tall trees disappeared, and before he realized it, Dawn arrived in completely foreign surroundings.

Before he was even able to survey the surroundings, he heard loud battle cries echoing around them.

"Protect the young miss with your lives!"

"If anything happens to her, all of you will die a brutal death!"

A cold and rough voice similar to howling wind echoed in the surroundings. The voice hit Dawn’s head like a whip, immediately clearing it of unnecessary thoughts.

After his head had calmed down, Dawn noticed three figures protecting a little girl with their bodies some distance away.

The girl seemed to be similar to him in age, skin white as snow and two gemstone-like eyes that were filled with tears as she loudly wailed, with snot flowing down her nose like rivers.

Just one glance and Dawn immediately frowned. Compared to this girl, he had truly grown up. He could somewhat understand what Fiona meant earlier.

In front of them was a young man dressed in rags, his face covered in coal dirt. He seemed to be a commoner working in coal mines. At this moment, the young man’s expression was utter hatred, as if the four people in front of him had killed his parents. If looks could kill, Dawn was sure the three people, including the girl, would have long turned into a bunch of dead bodies.

Just as he was looking at the boy, he noticed an eerily familiar tattoo of a venomous snake on the young man’s arms.

"An abyss mark holder..."

The snake seemed to be alive as it swam upwards and curled around the young man’s arms.

From time to time, the snake would open its pitch-black maw, and particles of red light would emerge from the young man’s body and merge with the snake.

The serpent’s eyes gleamed with a sickly red glow, its scales shifting as if thousands of tiny worms writhed beneath its skin.

After the process ended, the snake would look even more lifelike, as if it was about to jump out of the young man’s arms.

The snake’s forked tongue flicked out, tasting the air. A slow, deep hiss filled the space—not from the boy, but from the mark itself.

Dawn even noticed a few white hairs at the young man’s temple.

Just at this moment, the snake seemed to have felt Dawn’s gaze, and its reptilian eyes narrowed.

Right then, his Superhero Danger sense skills suddenly seemed to have gone haywire, sending intense warnings.

"What the hell." Dawn clutched his forehead tightly; he felt as if his forehead had been stabbed by a nail.

[Chance of Death in next few minutes: 90%. Escape immediately.]

A window flashing with crimson appeared in front of him, warning him about the severity of the situation.

The three men protecting the little girl also seemed to understand something and shouted at the same time:

"His abyss mark is about to erupt! Quickly take the young miss and escape!"

One of them hurriedly turned back and quickly tried to grab the girl’s hand.

However, it seemed they were too late. The next moment, the young man’s body burst into a shower of blood.

The droplets seemed to be highly acidic, as when they hit the green vegetation nearby, a trail of smoke emerged, flying high in the air.

Looking at the scene, Dawn felt his heart jump out of his body.

"Big sis Fiona, I think mommy seems to be calling me."

Dawn said, trying to sound as cute as possible. Three Silver Crystals weren’t worth dying for. Maybe if it was Gold... No, what the hell was I even thinking!?

Fiona seemed to have ignored his words; she looked at the gathering in front of her with a strange look in her eyes. Her fingers twitched slightly. It was the only sign of emotion on her otherwise expressionless face. Dawn had never seen her react like this before.

Without saying anything, she placed Dawn on the ground and looked at him with a serious face.

"Young master, you try to escape with these people while I keep this beast busy."

Dawn obediently nodded his head with a strange look in his eyes.

"Why did it sound as if she was eager to fight with the monster?"
