Chapter 56: Smile

She even voiced her suspicions about a former salesperson who had previously dealt with the two companies but had since left the company.

Jake’s previously tangled thoughts seemed to be washed clean by a stream of water, leaving his mind as pure as a blank sheet of paper. The parts of Lena’s "inner voices" he hadn’t understood before suddenly became clear. The ex-boyfriend Lena mentioned turned out to be him.

To confirm his suspicion, Jake asked, "Manager, do you remember the name of that salesperson?"

Mina paused briefly, then recalled. Thanks to her strong memory, even though she had only called the company’s archives department for the information at the time, she still remembered the salesperson’s name.

"Clark."

Jake’s heart trembled, and everything clicked into place. This was very likely the key evidence. But now, the main issue was how to subtly convey this crucial information to Manager Mina.

Jake lowered his gaze, deep in thought.

Mina watched Jake’s handsome face as he focused intently, his head slightly bowed, and her heart skipped a beat. For a moment, Jake’s demeanor and aura overlapped with that of her once-adored older brother. The resemblance was uncanny—this feeling, this presence. Mina’s heart fluttered as she quietly admired Jake.

Jake, preoccupied with strategizing, didn’t notice Mina’s "inner voices."

After a minute of silence, Jake slowly spoke, "Have you considered the possibility that the salesperson collaborated with someone in the sales department to leak company secrets to a third party?"

Jake’s suspicion was reasonable and didn’t reveal too much of his own hand.

Mina, suddenly hearing Jake’s words, felt as if a light had been shone on her confusion. The gaze she had fixed on Jake’s demeanor moments earlier instantly sharpened, and her admiration for him grew even more.

"He really is clever."

Sometimes, those too close to a situation couldn’t see clearly, while outsiders could. If Mina had been an outsider, she might have thought of this herself. But as the sales department manager, she was buried in countless tasks and responsibilities. Her dedication to her work often left her mentally exhausted or distracted.

Though Mina quickly steadied her emotions, the flush on her cheeks from the wine deepened slightly, adding to her mature charm. The unconscious allure she exuded in that moment captivated Jake briefly.

"That’s a great angle. I’ll start investigating it tomorrow!" Mina slowly stood up, bringing with her the intoxicating aroma of wine.

"Let’s go. Thank you for your help today."

"You’re too kind, Manager. It’s part of my job." Jake also stood up and politely added, "I didn’t drink. I can drive."

Mina didn’t refuse. With the poise of a queen, she strode out of the private room first.

Jake smiled faintly. The heavy weight on his heart finally lifted. Now, with Manager Mina’s intelligence, Lena and Director Brant wouldn’t escape unscathed.

Driving Manager Mina’s car, Jake headed toward her home.

Manager Mina’s vehicle was a black Audi A8, fitting for her authoritative and composed demeanor. Accustomed to driving his modest, ten-thousand-dollar Volkswagen, Jake felt slightly out of place in such an expensive car. He suddenly recalled his mother-in-law’s fiery red Maserati and mused that the lives of the wealthy were truly beyond ordinary imagination.

The Audi’s excellent sound insulation allowed only the faint sound of Manager Mina’s breathing to be heard as they sped down the lamp-lit highway.

Mina relaxed in the passenger seat, her all-black outfit and dark nail polish lending her a mysterious, alluring charm. Her black-stockinged legs crossed elegantly, disappearing into the footwell of the passenger side.

"Jake, where did you work before?" Mina tilted her head slightly, observing Jake through the passenger window.

"At Tongan Sales Company on Rainy Road."

"That’s not too far from ’Shigella.’ Did you live around there?"

"Yeah."

"What made you suddenly decide to work at ’Shigella’?"

Jake hesitated, then casually made up an excuse. "A friend referred me." His relationship with the president couldn’t be revealed to anyone—that was part of the agreement.

This was just in case Jake turned out to be a slacker who secretly revealed his relationship with the president. It was highly likely that a bunch of bootlickers would appear, offering Jake a certain degree of help.

Mina was an extremely intelligent woman, but she didn’t think much about other possibilities. Jake’s abilities were obvious to everyone. Even if he had gotten in through connections, it wouldn’t have been a big deal.

"Your work performance is quite impressive. Do you have the confidence to become a team leader?" Mina was particularly expectant of Jake and probed further.

"Thump, thump, thump..."

Jake could clearly hear his own fervent heartbeat. Manager Mina’s words struck a chord deep within him.

The position of team leader was something he had longed for.

He forced himself to steady his trembling hands on the steering wheel.

Trying to calm himself, he said, "I’d definitely love to, but it doesn’t seem to align with the company’s regulations, does it?"

When Jake first joined Shigella, he had skimmed through the company’s rules and regulations twice, then focused on reading the pathways and methods for promotion.

One of the points mentioned that to be promoted to team leader in the sales department, one needed at least one year of work experience excluding the probation period, along with either significant contributions to the company or performance reaching team leader level before being eligible to apply for a promotion.

Jake had been at Shigella for less than three months. Even if his mother in law had exempted his probation period, his seniority was far from sufficient. However, his performance had exceeded expectations. If he maintained this momentum, things might change.

Another crucial point was the recent sales competition, which had added considerable weight to Jake’s qualifications.

"Hehe, don’t worry about that. If this internal spy issue is resolved smoothly, you’ll have made a significant contribution." Mina paused briefly. "Don’t forget, you’re also the champion of the recent selection competition and the top performer in sales."

"I think your chances of being promoted to team leader are quite high."

Hearing Manager Mina’s remarks, despite Jake’s efforts to conceal it, the slight upward curve at the corners of his mouth betrayed his excitement. "Thank you, Manager... I don’t even know what to say."

Jake was somewhat incoherent.

Mina, however, was secretly delighted. "From now on, don’t call me Manager in private. It doesn’t sound nice."

"Huh?" Still immersed in his joy, Jake didn’t notice the subtle shift in Mina’s mood.

After a moment of hesitation, he replied uncertainly, "Then what should I call you?"

"I’m a few years older than you. Calling me Sister isn’t too much, is it?" Mina teased deliberately.

"Min... Sister..." Jake tentatively uttered a title that felt respectful yet not overly familiar.

"Mmm, not bad. Call me that from now on!"

...

The night scenery outside the window flickered past as the night deepened. After changing his way of addressing Manager Mina, Jake could sense a faint happiness emanating from her.

But his desire for the team leader position was too overwhelming, causing him to overlook Manager Mina’s reaction as he fantasized about fulfilling his agreement with his mother in law in six months and marrying Mia.

The smile on his face grew deeper than the night.

Manager Mina’s home wasn’t far from the company. It took less than ten minutes to reach the destination.

It was a standalone two story Western style house, resembling a small villa like an apartment. Many of the neighboring homes had similar designs, suggesting that the residents here were all successful individuals like Manager Mina.

Following Manager Mina’s instructions, Jake parked the Audi in the parking space directly opposite the house.

"Sister Min, I’ll head back now."

Mina suppressed the urge to ask Jake to stay and said, "You’ve worked hard. Be careful on your way back."

"Tap, tap, tap..."

Only after Manager Mina’s alluring black silhouette disappeared did Jake take out his phone, calling for a ride while walking out of the neighborhood.

On the second floor of the house, Mina silently watched Jake leave.

The smile on her lips was captivating yet carried a bewitching, almost devilish charm.

"Jake, this sister won’t let you escape from my grasp."
