Chapter 1337: Chapter 1337: The Black Market of Linbei
"Before knowing what the Regent’s actual attitude is, it’s indeed a normal choice not to attend the banquet, a good judgment,"
Mo Ningchen gave a fair assessment of Su Chengyu’s performance on their way.
"After all, though ostensibly clear of connection, one can’t shake off the suspicion that Lays is under the command of the Beiluo Royal Family."
Su Chengyu voiced his reasoning, naturally he would not readily agree without being certain if it was a trap like the Feast at Hong Gate.
If he were alone, Su Chengyu might consider whether to personally investigate, but since it involved moving as a threesome, he naturally would not opt for recklessness.
"Being in a foreign land, one must always plan for the worst from the outset, and you’ve done well on that account," Mo Ningchen nodded in approval.
"That’s still far from enough."
Yu Ming spoke out abruptly, clearly still not completely convinced of Su Chengyu’s abilities.
Mo Ningchen glanced at her and said, "Yu Ming, why be so stubborn? Who knew everything when they first started? Su Chengyu is learning and progressing quickly, and besides, you couldn’t have dealt with those Nether Clan members just now either, without him."
"Shut up! Even without him, I could have wiped out the Nether Clan all the same!"
Yu Ming was visibly agitated, looking just as she had when she first detected the Nether Clan’s presence.
Mo Ningchen turned away vexed, no longer willing to provoke Yu Ming, while Su Chengyu, somewhat puzzled, glanced at Mo Ningchen and said softly through a voice transmission.
"Big Brother Mo, does Yu Ming the Saint Envoy have some past with the Nether Clan?"
Upon hearing this, Mo Ningchen cautiously glanced at Yu Ming beside him and said, "That’s something you have to ask her yourself, a gentleman doesn’t pry."
Su Chengyu was at a loss for words. Did he not want to ask? But every time the Nether Clan was mentioned, Yu Ming’s agitated demeanor made it very difficult for Su Chengyu to broach the topic.
"Stop whispering, both of you. We’re approaching our next destination."
The first city the trio visited was not Laoguan City, which was closest to Xia Country, but rather Linbei City, to the southwest of Laoguan City.
Even within the vast Bei Luo Empire, Linbei City was considered to be very large.
Not because the city itself was that big, but because it was one of the most critical port cities of the Bei Luo Empire.
Linbei City was the starting city of Desert River that connected the Bei Luo Empire with Xia Country, serving as a major economic hub of exchange between the two nations.
As such, the city was a melting pot of people, home to all sorts of individuals from the Bei Luo Empire, as well as many merchants, Martial Artists, and even Cultivators traveling between the two nations.
Here, you could find many things you desired, not limited to resources, Magical Treasures, intelligence, and even people.
Men, women, Xia Citizens, The North Luo People—in Bei Luo, where human trafficking was already a grey area, Linbei City was even more of a "lawless land" where anything could be bought for a price.
Of course, it was an orderly lawless land.
As long as you followed the rules of the game here, there was nothing you couldn’t find.
The three of them entered the city openly and rightfully through the southern port and were immediately surrounded by bothersome "flies" buzzing around them.
There were swindlers who saw their Xia Country attire and thought to make a quick profit, as well as street ruffians from the port who saw Yu Ming’s ordinary appearance and wanted to harass her.
The former, after some simple but pointed questioning from Su Chengyu, realized that the trio was not easily deceived and wisely left. The latter was promptly thrown into Desert River, along with his weapons, by Mo Ningchen.
Su Chengyu glanced at the shivering Martial Artist in the river and said in a low voice, "It’s so cold; weren’t you afraid you would kill the man by throwing him into the water?"
The Bei Luo Empire had a chilly climate, and though the Desert River never froze completely, the water temperature was already well below zero, kept unfrozen solely due to the Spiritual Energy of the earth veins.
Mo Ningchen replied indifferently, "That’s what you don’t understand. The Martial Artists of the Bei Luo Empire are also known as Fighters; unlike our Xia citizens, they focus more on the Cultivation of their bodies, aiming for the ability to overpower ten with brute strength, impervious to weapons and invulnerable to fire and water. This guy may not be strong, but if he were to freeze to death in these waters, it could only mean... he deserved it."
Su Chengyu was taken aback; he hadn’t expected Mo Ningchen, who seemed amiable most of the time, to also have such an uncompromising side.
But Su Chengyu soon understood; after all, they were Saint Envoys of the Demon Slayer Department, and even if it came to decisive action, Su Chengyu could not fault Red Flame, who only chose the wrong team, whereas Qian Jun had so far proven to be trustworthy.
Following Yu Ming, they arrived at an inn of simple style, and an old man in Executor attire immediately addressed them upon one glance.
"Are you Ms. Black Rose’s reservation?"
Su Chengyu and Mo Ningchen turned their heads toward Yu Ming, who, without changing her expression, nodded and said, "Three rooms and three tickets."
The old Executor nodded and said, "The entry tickets have been placed in your rooms already. Here are the keys."
After each took a key, the trio made their way to their lodgings. Along the way, Mo Ningchen and Su Chengyu exchanged frenzied looks, nearly writing their thoughts on their faces.
An exasperated Yu Ming from behind them said, "Black Rose is an alias I used when I was executing a mission here last time. When in Rome, do as the Romans do; I simply picked a convenient name from this place."
Su Chengyu and Mo Ningchen were momentarily taken aback, but ultimately, it was the more familiar Mo Ningchen who gave a thumb’s up and complimented, "Not a bad name; it has taste."
Yu Ming glared at him and said, "Without an identity in this underground place, did you think entry tickets were easy to obtain?"
Hearing this, Su Chengyu finally spoke up, "What are these entry tickets for?"
When Su Chengyu touched upon serious matters, Yu Ming put on a sober expression and said in earnest, "Linbei’s underground black market opens once a month. I figured our arrival in Linbei City would coincide, so I secured three tickets in advance."
"What’s special about this black market?"
Su Chengyu had visited many auctions and exchanges, but he had never really been to an underground black market.
On one hand, his previous lack of strength made him worry about being ripped off, and on the other, prices in the black market for valuable items were usually even higher than through regular channels.
"The black market in Linbei City doesn’t just trade goods; more importantly, it trades in intelligence. Though the Demon Slayer Department has been operating in the Bei Luo Empire for many years, outside of City of Thousand Peaks, we haven’t established a complete intelligence network in other places. To start an investigation into the Demonic Path’s status in the Bei Luo Empire, this place is our best entry point."
Mo Ningchen spoke gravely, "Intelligence is the most expensive commodity. Even for the well-funded Demon Slayer Department, getting a reimbursement for this is not going to be easy."
"I know, but the dead don’t ask for payment."
Upon hearing that, Su Chengyu froze in place, realizing at that moment.
They, it turned out, were here to cheat the cheaters.
