Chapter 1336: Alliance Badge
Chapter 1336: Chapter 1336: Alliance Badge
"It is indeed so, this is the ultimate reason why the Nether Clan was banished to the Dark Sea, never again to see the light of day."
You Ming’s touch of desolation particularly caught the attention of Su Chengyu, but at the moment he didn’t feel it was the right time to ask and had to temporarily keep his questions to himself.
Mo Ningchen, who was off to the side, spoke softly, "But apart from Xia Country, how many cultivators are there in the world? Although the countries surrounding the Dark Sea seemingly resist the idea openly, privately, some wouldn’t mind the emergence of the Nether Clan and the establishment of a nation of their own."
"Have they gone mad? The Nether Clan’s method of turning the dead into puppets is utterly heartless, do they not fear their own citizens becoming such puppets?"
Su Chengyu said excitedly.
"Previously, no one desired that, but now it may well be the case. After all, a hundred years ago, Xia Country was on the brink of collapse, while now it stands as one of the world powers."
Mo Ningchen’s incisive remarks helped Su Chengyu understand the reasoning.
All these matters were things he had never thought of before joining the Demon Slayer Department. Xia Country and Dongying were mortal enemies; regardless of the complications of status, the two countries were destined to be opposed.
As for other nations, Su Chengyu had no idea what their relationships with Xia Country really were.
"Even the Bei Luo Empire, our former ally, has chosen to collude with the Nether Clan?"
His words carried a hint of disappointment, and Su Chengyu had not expected reality to be so cruel.
"That’s not necessarily the case. From what we know so far, it’s only General Lays who had an affair with the Nether Clan, and regardless of whether the Bei Luo Empire is behind it, they would definitely strive to wash their hands of it right now."
As Mo Ningchen’s voice faded, Captain Charles approached with a few of the Bei Luo border guards, and the three of them immediately turned their gaze to them.
"Gentlemen who have traveled from afar, I wonder if you might have seen General Lays?"
Su Chengyu exchanged glances with the two, then stepped forward and said, "My attendant was previously attacked by General Lays, and if nothing else, these Nether Clan members were likely gathered by him."
"How is that possible?!"
Charles said, disbelieving.
"Oh? Are you suggesting we, who have guarded the entire military camp, are lying?"
Su Chengyu spoke with a commanding confidence that rendered Charles somewhat confused.
Although he found Su Chengyu’s words incredible, he also understood that had it not been for Su Chengyu’s intervention, all inside the border guard would have been destined to become puppets of the Nether Clan.
The Nether Clan never left survivors in their wake; to them, living slaves were far less useful than the dead transformed into puppets.
"I apologize, that’s not what I meant. Please wait, I’ll immediately report this matter and wait for a reply from the higher-ups."
After dropping that sentence, Charles hurriedly left to contact the upper echelons of the Bei Luo Empire.
Su Chengyu did not stop him; regardless of the truth, the Bei Luo Empire would have to give an explanation.
Soon, Charles returned to their side and bowed deeply to the three, saying, "I apologize, General Lays’ collusion with the Nether Clan is a failure on the part of our Bei Luo Empire. The Royal Family has been informed about the incident, and His Royal Highness the Regent sincerely invites the three of you to the City of Thousand Peaks, to personally host a banquet in apology."
The Empress of the Bei Luo Empire had come to the throne more than a decade after the upheaval, which had nearly wiped out the Royal Family, leaving only a young girl of the purest bloodline alive.
Under Xu Zijing’s efforts to stabilize the nation’s state of affairs, this girl, only seven years old at the time, ultimately ascended to the throne, though of course, the real power over national affairs was assumed by Prince Blaire, who had come from outside the Royal Family.
Since then, the relationship between the Bei Luo Empire and Xia Country had always been friendly, and the attack they suffered this time could be considered the most severe diplomatic incident to date.
Su Chengyu’s peripheral vision swept over Mo Ningchen and You Ming, but the two seemed as if they hadn’t noticed and made no statement, forcing Su Chengyu to ponder and make his own judgment.
"Sorry, our journey does not include plans to visit the City of Thousand Peaks, so..."
Upon hearing this, Charles immediately said, "His Royal Highness the Regent has mentioned that if you do not intend to visit the City of Thousand Peaks, after you return to your country, he will also have gifts sent personally to the Beitang estate. Of course, before that, His Majesty is always welcome to change your plans and visit the City of Thousand Peaks."
"Then I’ll thank His Royal Highness the Regent in advance."
Su Chengyu spoke.
At these words, Charles finally breathed a sigh of relief and gave Su Chengyu and his companions a standard military salute.
He then took several documents from someone beside him and handed them to the trio, "These are your entry papers, please keep them safe."
"Thank you."
Su Chengyu received the documents with a smile.
After getting the entry papers, they did not stay in the military tent any longer. Su Chengyu and his companions set off and continued heading north undercover.
Charles watched them leave and then returned to the office where General Lays had been, sinking into the chair he had never dared to sit in before, a smile appearing on his face.
Although he had walked a fine line between life and death, after General Lays’s disappearance, he had fortuitously become the highest commander of the border defense forces, and his military rank had smoothly risen from tribunus to brigadier general, benefitting somewhat from the misfortune.
"Do you find it comfortable to sit there?"
A gloomy voice suddenly resounded beside Charles, frightening him so much he leapt out of the chair, his back drenched with sweat at the sight of Lays, who had appeared in the room at some unknown time.
"Brig...Brigadier?"
Lays retorted, "There’s no need to call me that anymore, haven’t I been dismissed?"
"In my heart, you will always be a brigadier!"
Charles responded without hesitation.
Lays snorted coldly and reclined in his chair, "Since the order from above has come down, you just focus on being the commander of the border defense. Don’t worry, after I leave, the Nether Clan probably won’t come to cause trouble at the border anymore."
Charles swallowed and said hesitantly, "Those members of the Nether Clan, was it you who..."
"Don’t ask about things you shouldn’t," Lays interrupted Charles, and then glanced at the papers on the desk, "The Beitang Family? Do you still plan to continue operating within the Bei Luo Empire under this identity?"
Charles was puzzled, "Brigadier? Is there a problem?"
"It’s nothing but problems, but it’s good in a way. With a clear identity, it’s easier to keep track of them. I want to see what these people from Xia Country are really after," Lays spoke ominously, putting the file down and tossing a badge onto the table.
The badge depicted a Black Snake intertwined with a Black Dragon, both cocooning a dazzling pearl. Charles felt confused—it was a badge design he had never seen before.
"Take this badge. From today, you are also a member of the Alliance."
"Alliance?"
Charles was taken aback for a moment, then tremblingly looked at the badge on the table.
"Is this Alliance the organization of the Nether Clan?"
"Nether Clan? No, you’re mistaken. Our Alliance is not comprised solely of the Nether Clan."
