Chapter 990 - 990 976 Awake
Chapter 990: 976: Awake Chapter 990: 976: Awake Ye Chen remained silent for a long time.
Xuan Si said, “Don’t tell me you have no feelings for Yun’er at all.”
Ye Chen smiled and replied, “Actually, I’m not entirely sure myself, but I do have feelings for her. She’s been so good to me, running into the Wastelands for me, not caring about her own life, almost died, and it seems we could live our days together.”
“I understand.”
“What do you understand?” asked Ye Chen.
Xuan Si replied, “What you like most is still Qing’er, but you know it’s impossible with her. Wei Yiling is dead, and you don’t want to regret anymore. When another Ling’er comes along, you want to live for somebody else.”
Upon hearing this, Ye Chen was silent for a long while before saying, “You are partly right, but that’s not entirely it.”
“Is that so! Now I think I understand. It’s strange that the person who’s the most difficult to understand is oneself.” Xuan Si also sipped some tea and then added, “This world is not perfect, just being ‘good enough’ is already pretty good. There’s no certain right or definite wrong.”
Ye Chen, too, smiled and said, “It feels a little like being caught up in the rivers and lakes, unable to help oneself.”
Xuan Si also smiled faintly and said, “I admire Yun’er even more.”
“Why?”
After a moment of thought, Xuan Si said, “She knows what she wants and hasn’t changed, regardless of any difficulties and hardships. She chases relentlessly and fearlessly. We can’t do that, which is why she’s the most genuine.”
Ye Chen listened intently, nodding slightly.
“And we are always thinking of all kinds of messy things and never dared to be as real as her.” Xuan Si’s words seemed as if she was also speaking to herself. There could not be purely platonic friendship; there had to be some feelings from her side.
The statement struck Ye Chen, who also laughed. The girl had analyzed it well. Just as Qing’er had accused him, why didn’t he show up on the night of their wedding? Would things have been different if he’d been more decisive and had fewer worries? But life is devoid of ‘ifs’.
“Could you let me know if there is any news?” Xuan Si was, of course, referring to the search for the Sacred Spirit Stone, knowing full well the danger of the journey, uncertain whether the Sect Leader of the Sacred Spirit Sect would agree.
“Don’t worry.”
“Honestly, I’m quite reluctant to let you go like this, but I know I’m not worthy of you.”
“Hey, that’s not right. I’m the one who’s not worthy of you.”
“I’m not as smart as Yun’er, nor do I have her kind of fearlessness.”
“Don’t talk like that anymore. Let’s go down for some late-night snacks.” Ye Chen stood up, stretching his limbs.
“Aren’t you afraid of being recognized?”
Ye Chen shook his head and said, “It should be unlikely to happen by such a coincidence.”
Xuan Si also stood up, having remained there the whole day, and said, “If you’re not afraid of being killed, then let’s go. Anyway, I’m not the one getting chopped up.”
Ye Chen pushed open the door of the room, below was pitch-dark.
“Following you is doomed to be a life of hardship. I’d rather keep it simple and ordinary.”
Ye Chen chuckled in response.
“Hopefully, there will be a time when the sky clears after the rain.”
In fact, Ye Chen initially wanted to announce to the public that he had died, but later he thought of deceiving Guo Yuyun. He knew Yun’er’s stubbornness, the unpredictability of his own future, and all the mess he was in. He didn’t want to bring her pain and danger, out of shame he made such a decision.
At dawn, after a quick meal,
Ye Chen had already told Ling Bo everything that needed to be conveyed; the weather was good that day.
Xuan Si was somewhat reluctant to part ways, not knowing how long she would have to wait and what fate awaited the monkey.
Meanwhile, Li Mo led two horses out of the stable.
“How about a farewell kiss for life or death?” Ye Chen said in his usual tone.
Xuan Si, however, smiled and replied, “Let’s save the kiss for when you come back.”
Ye Chen glanced around and said with a smile, “Then how about a warm hug?”
The two of them shared a brief hug.
“Hey, don’t cry and make a fuss. It’s quite unbearable. A beautiful mood becomes less beautiful that way.” Ye Chen mounted the horse.
“Send some word soon.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll send you a letter when my son turns one month old.” Ye Chen rode away first, with Li Mo following on horseback behind him.
He quickly disappeared ahead, leaving Xuan Si still looking out.
Xuan Hong had not seen Xuan Si the whole night, searching the streets, when he saw her drooling like she was in heat at the door of the inn, and came running over, “Senior Sister, what are you looking at?”
That broke Xuan Si’s concentration, and she shook her head.
“Where were you last night?”
Xuan Si replied, “I met a wild man.”
“Are you still looking for that masked man? I’ve told you, the man from New City Sect is dead, died on Sky Mountain,” Xuan Hong knew Xuan Si was looking for the masked man the day before.
“Yes, the monkey is indeed dead.” Xuan Si turned around and asked, “Where’s Uncle Xuan Wen? Where are we headed next?”
“Uncle Xuan Wen is making preparations. The Third Demon’s people have set out to sea, and their destination is unknown. We can’t return to Demon Valley now, but he’s found us a manor recommended by the Sect Leader of the Nine Leaves Sect. Uncle Xuan Wen said for now we’ll head to the village and then discuss our future plans.”
“”Alright then.”
“Where did you go last night, all night long?”
“They’re saying that I ran off with a wild man.”
Xuan Hong knew Xuan Si was joking.
Wan Danrong called out, “Hurry up, Yun’er is awake.”
It was as if she had returned from hell itself.
Guo Yuyun slowly opened her eyes, glanced around, and found herself in a girl’s room, yet it felt very unfamiliar. Seeing her own sister, she asked, “Sister, where are we?”
Yang Tao’er smiled and said, “Dragonfly Mountain, this is Divine Doctor Zhu’s hometown.”
Guo Yuyun felt as if she had been in a very long dream and asked, “How long have I slept?”
“Hehe, now that requires some serious calculation.” Yang Tao’er started to count.
Guo Yuqing helped Guo Yuyun sit up with support, leaning against the pillow.
Yun’er, touching her aching head, began to recall and immediately asked, “Where is Ye Chen?”
Upon this question, the atmosphere inside the room instantly turned solemn as they looked at each other.
“Where is Ye Chen?” Yun’er pressed on.
Guo Yuqing didn’t know how to begin, only saying, “We’ll talk about that later.” He was worried that revealing everything now might be too much for Yun’er to handle.
Wan Danrong brought in some tea, set it down, and hastily went out again, leaving only Yang Tao’er and Guo Yuqing in the room.
Yun’er remembered the last part of her memories, that Ye Chen had turned into the Wolf King, and then she couldn’t remember anything at all.
“Sister, tell me, where is Ye Chen?” Their expressions indicated that something had happened to Ye Chen.
Only then did Yang Tao’er say, “He’s buried up on Sky Mountain?”
Yun’er not understanding the implication, exclaimed, “What? Impossible.”
“You had passed out, and he went up Sky Mountain to pick the Sky Mountain Snow Lotus to save you. He got caught in an avalanche and didn’t make it back alive.”
Already feeble, Yun’er fainted upon hearing this.
Guo Yuqing called out several times but couldn’t wake her, so she hurried to call for Divine Doctor Zhu.
Wan Danrong came jumping in, exclaiming, “What’s happened, has she fainted?”
She then learned that indeed Yun’er had passed out again.
Wan Danrong reproached, “Couldn’t you wait until after she had something to eat before telling her?”
Yang Tao’er retorted, “She kept asking, could you not tell her? It’s all because of that damn monkey, always stirring up trouble, he deserves to be struck by lightning.”
It wasn’t until the afternoon that Yun’er awoke once more. As soon as she did, she called out for her sister. Qing’er ran into the room, and at that moment, Yun’er persisted in asking about Ye Chen.
Having no alternative at that point, Qing’er followed the plan they had devised and recounted the story to Yun’er, who listened and wept. Wan Danrong tried to console her from the side, but no matter what comforting words she said, none were effective. Yun’er’s crying grew increasingly heartbroken, and nobody knew how long she wept. It took a great deal of effort to get her to eat a little food, after which Guo Yuyun fell into a drowsy sleep again.
Having washed her face, Wan Danrong stepped out of the room and saw Yang Tao’er drinking tea on the other side. She blurted out, “And you still have the nerve to drink tea.”
“Why shouldn’t I drink tea? None of this mess is my doing,” Yang Tao’er responded.
“I feel like I’m doing something equivalent to giving birth to a son without a PI eye,” Wan Danrong said, unable to endure seeing Yun’er in such tearful misery.
Yang Tao’er gave a cold laugh, “It’s that monkey who brought a son into the world without a PI eye.”
“Why do I feel this is too cruel?”
Yang Tao’er retorted, “If you knew it was too cruel, why didn’t you object when Ye Chen proposed this?”
“What objection could I raise? You didn’t oppose it either, did you?”
“What’s done is done; let’s all just do our best,” said Yang Tao’er, who could still understand that monkey’s feelings, annoyed as she was. She knew Ye Chen must have made his decision after careful consideration.
Wan Danrong also drank a couple cups of tea.
It was then that Qing’er finally came out from the room.
Wan Danrong asked, “Senior Sister Qing’er, what do we do next?”
Qing’er answered, “He Xibai and Ling Jian will arrive today, and I plan to take her down from the mountain. We’ll go to Demon Palace City. As for her stepmother, who knows how many letters she’s sent already.”
“Are we going back now? Shouldn’t we stay a few days?” Wan Danrong was still somewhat worried.
“After all, this isn’t home,” Qing’er said, glancing around.
Wan Danrong still looked concerned and suggested, “Then let me go back with you.”
“Don’t you need to return to the Wastelands?”
Wan Danrong contemplated and replied, “It won’t make much difference if it’s a few days later. Since I’ve already left, I’d like to help Yun’er if I can.”
“I’m very grateful for that.”
“Don’t mention it. She and I are friends after all. At a time like this, we should help each other.” Wan Danrong wasn’t sure what else she could do.
