Chapter 482 - 482 468 Ambush
Chapter 482: Chapter 468: Ambush Chapter 482: Chapter 468: Ambush Ye Chen sought ways to cheer up Ling’er, exposing her to more positive things, hoping little by little to elicit a smile from her.
Jiang Zhuge and his followers quietly returned to Wasteland City, now a dilapidated and ruined area, the only reminder of its past being fragments of its former grandeur.
What surprised them, however, was that some people remained, much like newly sprouting buds from a cut-down tree, though not as resplendent as before, there was a glimmer of hope to behold.
Especially when the survivors saw the returning New City Sect, excitement swept them and an evening of wild celebration ensued.
In the Wastelands, a city, no matter how well built, could easily fall into ruin again without a guardian. The New City Sect had thus taken up this role.
Jiang Zhuge, however, didn’t allow himself any relaxation. He knew that everything was only beginning, and Gua Zhengnie and his lot wouldn’t make things easy for them.
As expected, three days later, Gua Zhengnie led his troops and launched an attack on Wasteland City. However, since Jiang Zhuge had made preparations in advance and Gua Zhengnie’s forces were not significant, they managed to repel the attack and force Gua Zhengnie to retreat.
However, word soon reached them that Gua Zhengnie was planning an even larger campaign, now with a larger force.
News came that Xiao Bai had led a group of people to join their team.
Jiang Zhuge was unsure whether this news was true.
Kong Sha then ran in, saying, “It’s true, Xiao Bai indeed led a group to join the New Third Demon.”
Upon hearing this, someone angrily said, “That bastard! I knew he wasn’t any good. He’s joined Gua Zhengnie to come against us; he’s a damn traitor. We should have killed him when our previous Sect Leader was alive.”
Jiang Zhuge stayed silent, lost in his thoughts.
Kong Sha added, “The group that Xiao Bai brought wasn’t big, but being a former member of the New City Sect, him joining the New Third Demon puts us at a disadvantage. I heard they are planning a larger encirclement.”
“Fear an egg! Didn’t we drive them away last time!” someone said.
Can Mo, however, said, “It was only because we were prepared beforehand, and Gua Zhengnie’s forces were lacking, that we managed to reluctantly push them back.”
Hearing this, Kong Sha suggested, “Maybe we should evacuate first.”
Upon hearing this, Jiang Zhuge responded, “No. We have just established confidence in Wasteland City. Suddenly evacuating now would make us look bad to the people here. We can’t withdraw, at least not now.”
Can Mo understood Jiang Zhuge’s point of view.
“We haven’t given up on Wasteland City. If we truly can’t hold our ground, we can temporarily withdraw and then return later,” argued Kong Sha.
“We can’t do that. If we do, then how would the people in Wasteland City trust us afterwards?” Jiang Zhuge retorted.
Can Mo suggested, “We should inform Ye Chen about this and see if there are other ways.”
Kong Sha agreed, “Yes, it would be even better if the people from the Xian Mo realm could help us.”
We can’t count on others; we’ve got to rely on ourselves,” Jiang Zhuge countered.
“We should at least inform the Sect Leader about the current situation in Wasteland City,” Can Mo chimed in.
Jiang Zhuge nodded in agreement, “We should certainly do that.”
“We should start preparing,” Can Mo said. “Even though Xiao Bai has joined them, I think they need time to coordinate. We need to make good use of that time.”
“Yes, we must keep an eye on Gua Zhengnie’s movements. If anything happens, report back to me right away.”
It was already nightfall, a figure stood in the dark. It was Lang Ji. She knew Ye Chen was a formidable martial artist, her mission this time is akin to walking into certain death. Nonetheless, it didn’t change her intention to kill Ye Chen.
A person walked over and said, “Confirmed, they’re not far from here. They’ll rest in the inn ahead tonight.”
Lang Ji remained calm, saying, “Once we go, we may not return, even if the plan succeeds. If anyone wants to back out, let them go.”
“No, we’ll all follow your lead.”
Lang Ji insisted, “Let them choose for themselves. Their lives are their own.”
The subordinate nodded obediently.
“I don’t want to force anyone. I know this mission is dangerous, and I can’t guarantee we’ll all make it back alive. But I must avenge my master.” Lang Ji continued, “Alright, go on. Tell them.”
The subordinate withdrew, and the stillness of the night returned.
They had already been in Kaifeng City for four to five days, visiting many of its historical sites.
This was a nice place, leaving them somewhat reluctant to depart.
Ye Chen looked at Ling’er and asked, “How about it? Shall we move on to the next city tomorrow?”
Ling’er sneered, “You don’t seem to care at all about the situation in the Wastelands.”
“I believe Jiang Zhuge can handle it.”
“He might not be able to hold off Gua Zhengnie and his people,” Ling’er said.
“So, do you think I can hold them off?”
“I don’t know, but you did defeat the Dragon Slaying Clan. After all, you’re still the Sect Leader of the New City Sect, they all listen to you. You were at least the Alliance Leader of the Xian Mo Realm.” Ling’er was not as aloof with him as she had previously been.
“I even forgot that I was once the Alliance Leader of Xian Mo,” Ye Chen laughed as he passed some delicacies to Ling’er.
Ever since they had last quarreled, even though Ling’er hadn’t accepted Ye Chen, their relationship had clearly eased a bit, this city was truly a place which helped people forget past grievances.
“I knew being a Sect Leader wouldn’t be fun, I have to take responsibility for everything. People think being a Sect Leader is all about enjoying privileges, but I know better. Everyone is looking at me, their lives are my responsibility.”
“Power and duty are intertwined.”
“I don’t see much power.”
“Of course, you didn’t exactly get to enjoy privileges like having a harem.”
“Forget about a harem, I would be satisfied with just one.” Ye Chen glanced at Ling’er and added, “But I can’t even get one.”
Ling’er just gave a faint smile.
“Alright, the hot pot is ready.” Mu Wanlan had brought the food to the table.
All kinds of dishes were served.
The evening had descended into darkness.
Ling’er said, “We should focus on important matters. There will always be time for leisure.”
Ye Chen nodded after hearing this and said, “Alright, we’ll do as you say.”
Suddenly, there was chaos outside. Not long after, someone announced that the stable was on fire.
Li Mo quickly stood up. He heard panicked footsteps and saw people carrying water towards the stables.
Their carriage and horses were still at the stables.
Li Mo said, “I’ll go and see,” before leading his dozen or so disciples out.
“Be careful,” Ye Chen said.
“Don’t worry.”
Li Mo and his disciples hurried out.
Suddenly, a crowd of people surged in.
Ye Chen continued, “After we deal with the matter of the Wastelands, we’ll travel the world.”
“We’re not kids anymore. What is there to enjoy?” Ling’er said.
The crowd was coming closer, already reaching the tables next to Ye Chen.
At this point, Ye Chen was the only one left at the table.
Suddenly, there was a clatter as someone dropped a knife from their bosom. It caught Ye Chen’s attention. These people were concealing blades under their clothes. Proper warriors from the Demon Domain should wear their blades at their waist, but they hid theirs, seemingly not wanting others to know.
The atmosphere instantly grew tense.
Mu Wanlan was delighted to see that things were going smoothly between Ye Chen and Ling’er. Fearing Ling’er would find it difficult to reach for the roast chicken at a distance, she picked some pieces of good quality meat for her.
Ling’er became alert and watched the person picking up the sword.
The person picking up the sword first gave Ye Chen a sidelong glance.
Ling’er nudged Ye Chen, who was also becoming anxious.
Apparently not needing to hide anymore, one man who was still crouching didn’t stand, instead swinging his blade at Ye Chen’s feet.
Ye Chen stepped on the blade, trapping it against the floor. Knife and sword handlers on both sides were pulling out their weapons from beneath their clothes.
Ye Chen kicked the man on the ground away. The man flew forward and crashed into an old-fashioned square table, smashing it to pieces.
As the attackers swarmed from one side, Ye Chen quickly shoved the unsuspecting Mu Wanlan aside, picked up a chair and hurled it at them, forcing several people on the right to pull back.
The attackers on the left were closing in. Although Ling’er’s legs were paralyzed, she was skilled in martial arts. She quickly defeated two attackers and dodged a sword.
But just then, numerous ambushers on the second floor leaped down, swords in hand. Without a word, they charged at Ye Chen, who kicked the old-fashioned square table towards them, blocking the two attackers behind Ling’er.
A dozen assassins had revealed themselves.
“Who are you? Why are you trying to kill us?” Ling’er asked.
Ye Chen said, “They must be from the Dragon Slaying Clan.” He speculated as their martial arts were obviously of the Dragon Slaying Clan.
Panicked, Mu Wanlan started yelling for help, hoping Li Mo outside the stable would come back to their aid.
However, the commotion of the fire outside was even greater. The cries from within the inn weren’t heard by those outside.
Two men charged towards Mu Wanlan.
Ye Chen threw a chair at the men who were chasing Mu Wanlan.
“Go tell Li Mo quickly,” Ling’er shouted.
The panicked inn employees and Waiter scurried to find places to hide.
Although Ye Chen was a skilled martial artist, he knew that in the heat of battle, blades would not discriminate. He must protect Ling’er, whose legs weren’t functioning well and could only sit on the wheelchair. More tables were thrown over. Ye Chen and Ling’er were now surrounded by their enemies.
Mu Wanlan was blocked by three men at the inn’s entrance, and couldn’t get out.
Ye Chen protected Ling’er closely. The blades came flying towards them, and Ye Chen hurled every chair and stool he could find at his attackers.
“These people came prepared.” Ling’er thought the fire outside was purposely set by them. They wanted to draw away Li Mo so they could attack them. She believed Ye Chen was their target.
If these people were from the Dragon Slaying Clan, even though Ye Chen didn’t kill the Mutant Winged Dragon, without him, the Mutant Winged Dragon wouldn’t have died either. They must be seeking revenge.
