Chapter 335 - 335 322 Feng Nianmeis Petty Mind
Chapter 335: Chapter 322: Feng Nianmei’s Petty Mind Chapter 335: Chapter 322: Feng Nianmei’s Petty Mind Su Hong could only shake his head, he really did not want to speak of these things.
He knew what the purpose of the Mutant Winged Dragon’s return this time was, and he was worried. Despite being the Alliance Leader at the moment, from Feng Nianmei’s perspective, this was a big deal, something to be happy about.
But in his view, it was a responsibility, a burden. If not handled correctly, he could become a sinner. So his stress was immense, really immense. But Feng Nianmei just didn’t understand and her words only added to his worries, making him less and less inclined to go back to that courtyard.
It was already at this stage and all Feng Nianmei was thinking about was not the dispute between the Immortals and Demons, but rather making their son the Sect Leader of the Immortal City Sect. She was on a completely different path than his own. How could that not make him angry?
He kept Ye Chen around because he saw him as a talent who could assist him, giving him someone to discuss matters with. After sending Qiao Fanfeng away, there weren’t many whom he could actually confer with. Ren Xiongbei, despite being able to share some of the load, lacked decisiveness, making him appreciate Ye Chen even more. But he happened to to have such a wife.
She was wary of him, not wanting him to have too much contact with Ye Chen. How could this not make him angry? He usually chose to ignore that kind of gossip because his primary focus was on protecting the Immortal City and defeating the Mutant Winged Dragon, ensuring that what happened to Wasteland City would not happen to the Central Plains. If he could turn danger into safety for the world of Immortals and Demons, he wouldn’t hesitate to risk his own life.
Ye Chen was reading when the sky began to gradually darken.
Suddenly, someone walked in. It was none other than Su Hong, which surprised Ye Chen somewhat.
Upon Su Hong’s arrival, the servant girl immediately sprung up to meet him. Su Hong saw Ye Chen in the middle of the courtyard and asked, “Are you getting used to living here?”
Ye Chen quickly nodded his head, not sure of what Su Hong’s intention was for coming here but becoming more vigilant nonetheless.
“Is Jiang Zhuge not here?”
“He should be at Fang Ziren’s place. He frequently goes there. I will send someone to call him back.” Ye Chen responded without any emotion. He was no longer a child and didn’t let emotions influence his actions easily.
“No need, I’m not looking for him. I just want to talk to you.”
Ye Chen immediately had the servant girls prepare some tea.
Su Hong said, “I should find you a better courtyard.”
“No need, it’s very nice and quiet here.”
“Thank you for coming to help us.”
Ye Chen remained silent.
Su Hong couldn’t help but blurt out, “About what was said that night, about your mother’s incident five years ago, I truly feel guilty. Really. It’s my responsibility, sure is a lot.”
“Don’t mention it again. I was drunk that night and said some nonsense. You shouldn’t take it to heart.” Ye Chen didn’t seem to want to bring up that incident again, as discussing it now seemed pointless.
“Your mother would be very proud to know how accomplished you are.”
The servant girl brought the tea and poured it out for the two of them, then Ye Chen dismissed her.
Knowing that Ye Chen was somewhat averse to this, making him uncomfortable, Su Hong didn’t want to dwell on it too much.
“Is there anything else?” Ye Chen asked.
“No, I just wanted to ask how you’re settling in here,” answered Su Hong.
“I’m doing fine.”
“That’s good. The advice you gave us today was very good. I agree with it. We lacked caution and your advice made us much more cautious.”
Ye Chen remained silent.
“You can continue to stay here for now. We may need to discuss some things with you.”
“If there’s anything that needs to be arranged, you can discuss it with Jiang Zhuge.”
“No, I think your insights are very good, very very good. You’ve been of great help to us.”
It seemed as though Ye Chen had long since grown accustomed to his current way of life. At his age, there was no need for someone to care for him. Having a father figure was by now not of necessity to him.
…
Zhan Ze went to see his mother. Feng Nianmei was upset, and Zhan Ze asked, “Mother, did Father upset you again?”
“Your father is now beyond reproach,” Feng Nianmei said.
“Did you fight with Father again?”
“I don’t want to argue with your father, it’s him who provoked me.”
“What happened now, mother?”
“It’s all because of the boy who just arrived. Recently, there has been gossip spreading around. They are saying we were the ones in the wrong back then, sympathizing with him and his mother, saying we shouldn’t have acted the way we did.”
“Ah, but those things are in the past, aren’t they? If those people want to talk, let them. Can we silence everyone?”
“That’s easier said than done. Your father, his heart is too soft. He always feels like he owes others something, that he’s wronged them. He’s insistent on keeping the boy in Immortal City, I’m afraid he might even give up his position as Sect Leader one day.”
“No way, mother, what are you thinking!”
“Who says it’s impossible? Your father has blamed me ever since Ye Xue died five years ago. He couldn’t let go, always searching for that boy, never giving up. But who would have known that the boy snuck into the Wastelands, otherwise, your father would’ve found him by now. Your father’s sense of debt towards him could be disadvantageous to you.”
“That can’t be, mother.”
“Who says it can’t be.” Feng Nianmei continued, “You see, this time, there’s no need for him to insist on keeping him in the mountains, the matter is already settled, why keep him there? I’ve heard from others that they arranged for the New City Sect to leave a person in charge of communications up there. But your father insists on keeping him here, what’s his intention? It’s clear that your father feels a deep guilt, and he desires to make amends for his years of self-blame.”
Zhan Ze listened very attentively.
Feng Nianmei continued, “Everyone now believes your father was in the wrong, unreasonable, and disgraceful. Everyone’s discussing this. You insist on keeping him here, aren’t you just giving them more to do so? Why not let him leave the mountains, but your father refuses to listen. I’ve tried talking him out of it, after all, it’s for his own good, but he walked away. Can you imagine how infuriating that is!”
“Mother, please, stop talking about it.”
“Oh, my son, you don’t understand, your father has always been kind-hearted. If this continues, I fear your father will give up his position as Sect Leader of Immortal City out of guilt.”
“That’s impossible, that could never happen.”
“Why wouldn’t it be possible? Say, if the boy returned to Immortal City to deal with the Dragon Slaying Clan, I don’t mind. What worries me is his intent to avenge the events five years ago, to harbor resentment against us. Could he have a hidden agenda to avenge his mother’s death?”
“Could that be possible?”
“Why wouldn’t it be? Look, your father hasn’t slept well for days since that speech at your wedding ceremony, your father already feels deep guilt. If this continues, he’ll only think about that boy, leaving no room for us, mother and daughter.”
“Could you be overthinking?”
“Are you suggesting that I’m being unreasonable, conjuring up wild ideas? I’m telling the truth, his purpose for coming here is likely not just to deal with the Dragon Slaying Clan. I suspect he’s trying to stir up trouble for us, seeking revenge for his deceased mother.” Feng Nianmei remembered something and added, “By the way, that Yu Qing, wasn’t she interested in him before? You should be careful.”
Zhan Ze became cautious.
“We don’t know if he has any other intention, if he really has other purposes. Coming back to the Central Plains might be to deal with the Dragon Slaying Clan, to avenge the deceased members of the New City Sect. But he may also seize the opportunity to seek justice for his deceased mother. Don’t take things too lightly.” Feng Nianmei continued, “Your father has a good heart, that’s what worries me. You mustn’t assume he’s a good person. Maybe he’s been plotting against us, and we just don’t realize it yet.”
Zhan Ze said, “Mother, don’t be angry.”
“I’m not angry, it’s just, your father is being inconsiderate. I am his wife, but he’s treating me worse than a stranger.” Feng Nianmei continued, “Anyway, your father can’t get too close to that boy.”
“Mother, what are you planning to do?”
“He must leave the mountain, we need to make him to do so.”
“But father has already decided to keep him on the mountain.”
“No, the more your father wants this, the less we can let him stay. If he stays, my heart won’t be at ease.”
“Are we going to force him off the mountain?”
“I’ll figure out a way.”
“But if father finds out, that won’t be good.”
“Actually it is good for you too. After all, Yu Qing and Ye Chen have a history. If he stays on the mountain, who knows when they will rekindle their old feelings.”
“No way.”
“We can’t wait until something happens before you start regretting it. Dealing with these things promptly will be beneficial for you.” Every time Feng Nianmei thought about Ye Chen staying on the mountain, she felt deeply unsettled.
Zhan Ze finally said, “Alright, as long as it can ease your worries, mother, then let’s find a way to make him leave the mountain.”
“He must leave the mountain, it’s not a good idea to keep someone like him around, we need to be decisive.” She was adamant that he had some other scheme.
“I’ll think of a way.” Said Zhan Ze, he had been contemplating a lot since the evening. Seeing that figure, he didn’t ask Yu Qing how they ran into each other. Was it really a chance encounter? He didn’t know, and he could no longer calm his unrested heart. He was too embarrassed to ask, so he held it in.
