Chapter 302 - 302 290 An Unchanging Heart

Chapter 302: Chapter 290: An Unchanging Heart Chapter 302: Chapter 290: An Unchanging Heart Ye Chen reminisced about the events of the past.

Jiang Zhuge expressed his concerns, saying, “It would be better for me to handle this reconnaissance mission. You should lead the team.”

“To be honest, you’re better at leading a team and coordinating efforts than I am,” Ye Chen continued, “Rest assured, my martial arts skills are superior to yours. If anything happens, I can easily break free.”

Jiang Zhuge could sense that Ye Chen had made up his mind. In fact, Ye Chen wasn’t keen on leading the team at all. After all the recent events, he wanted to take some time off and relax.

“Actually, I have another purpose. Walking with a large group isn’t convenient for me. I also need some quiet time to relax. I’ll go ahead and report back if something comes up,” Ye Chen added.

Jiang Zhuge accepted the plan, saying, “Alright, you are the Sect Leader.”

“Don’t get too close to them. If the Dragon Slaying Clan discovers us, we’ll be in big trouble. Even if they don’t, if the people of Heavenly City mistake us for the Dragon Slaying Clan, it could lead to a fight. That would be disastrous,” Ye Chen warned.

“Understood,”

“Just keep an eye on them. If they change their course, let me know immediately.”

“Alright.”

“So it’s settled then. You will lead the people, and be cautious in everything.” Ye Chen had already called Li Mo over to explain the plan. Soon after, they began their journey.

Although the Slaughter Saint and Jing Po had regained their stability, a group from the Dragon Slaying Clan had already entered the Central Plains through the Wastelands’ gate.

Su Hong knew about this and quickly conveyed the news to those in the Demon Domain, preparing them for what lay ahead.

Ren Xiongbei returned and declared, “It’s not Mutant Winged Dragon. He’s still in the Wastelands.”

Su Hong feared that the intruder could be Mutant Winged Dragon. If it was him, the danger would be far greater. Hence, he sent someone to investigate if Mutant Winged Dragon had indeed returned. Ren Xiongbei had just confirmed that it wasn’t him.

Su Hong was somewhat relieved, but the fact remained that a group from the Dragon Slaying Clan had arrived, keeping him on high alert.

Ren Xiongbei reported, “A group managed to evade us and enter Central Plains. They certainly don’t want our Demon Domain grand meeting to proceed smoothly.”

“Yes, I’m aware of that. How do you think they’ll proceed?” Su Hong asked curiously.

Ren Xiongbei speculated, “According to Qiao Fanfeng, the number of Dragon Slaying Clan disciples that have infiltrated is roughly between one thousand and fifteen hundred. They wouldn’t dare to attack our Immortal City or Demon Palace outright. They’re more likely to target the smaller sects.”

“How do you think they’ll choose their targets?”

“They have already started to mobilize. If they can unify and move together, they can provide support to each other. If anything happens, they can aid each other. That could be advantageous.”

“That sounds like a good idea.”

“I will advise them to move together, particularly those who are closer to each other”, Ren Xiongbei added.

“What about Qiao Fanfeng right now?” Su Hong inquired.

“He’s been eluded by those people and has only a small number of people with him. They’re desperately hurrying back here.”

“Ask them not to rush back to Immortal City. They should try to group up with disciples from other sects.”

“Indeed, that would be beneficial.”

“It is crucial that we figure out their whereabouts as soon as possible,” Su Hong felt an urgent need to avoid any mishaps during this critical time.

“Right, in that case, let’s not rush Qiao Fanfeng back here.”

“Let them return together with disciples from other sects.”

“Good, that’s a plan.”

Su Hong, unable to think of a better plan, asked, “What about the people from Demon Palace?”

“They should have set off already.”

“Great, try to get them to move together and arrive in unison.”

“Alright, don’t worry, I will.”

In a blink of an eye, five years had passed. Guo Yuqing was no longer a little girl; it was time for her to be married. She was filled with apprehension, scared that she might make a wrong decision that would affect her happiness for the rest of her life.

She hesitated for a while, recalling events from a long time ago. After Ye Chen left, there was no news of him. Later, she reconciled with Su Zhanze.

Over the years, she moved frequently and felt that there were no better options for her. Her mother arranged her marriage. Actually, it was her stepmother who persuaded her. Xia Yue used her tricks, knowing that Su Zhanze admired Guo Yuqing, she felt this marriage was a good match.

At first, Xia Yue wanted her own daughter, Guo Yuyun, to marry Su Zhanze. But after learning that Guo Yuyun had no interest and knowing Su Zhanze’s true feelings, she decided to push Guo Yuqing towards him.

Now, at this crucial time, she felt that even though Guo Yuqing was not her biological daughter, if she can marry Su Zhanze, it would forge a relation with the Immortal City Sect. That would be beneficial for her son’s future succession as the leader of the Demon Palace, even though her son was still very young. Who knows when this connection might come in handy?

On balance, it made sense.

Su Zhanze knew about Xia Yue’s intentions and tried his best to please her, always bringing lavish gifts every time he visited.

As for Xia Yue, she was always pleased.

If Guo Yuqing yielded to Xia Yue, her days in the Demon Palace would be much easier. If not, they would be considerably more difficult.

Under Xia Yue’s influence, days have passed, and things have led to the current state.

When one is not alone, one can talk big and bluster. But when seclusion and silence take over, one truly has to ponder the contents of their heart – what do they really desire?

Because this is not child’s play.

The horse carriage halted. Luo Rui outside called out, “Qing’er, it’s time to get off the carriage.” She had assumed that Yu Qing had fallen asleep. Upon opening the carriage curtain, she noticed Yu Qing sitting there blankly as if deep in thought, unaware that they have stopped.

Her face, still tantalizing as ever, round like a peach, and those sparkling eyes, forever captivating.

“Still daydreaming! You should be emotionally prepared by now!” Luo Rui chided.

Looking outside, Yu Qing realized that it had started to get dark. Her expression didn’t fluctuate much; she understood the implications of marrying Su Zhanze, as it would benefit Demon Palace. She accepted this, and most importantly, she knew Su Zhanze’s affection for her was genuine, and that was enough.

They have now entered a city.

“Come down, my princess.”

Only then did Yu Qing show a hint of a smile.

Luo Rui said, “If this happened to someone else, they would be so excited that they wouldn’t be able to sleep for days and nights.”

“But you are the exact opposite, looking all worried.”

“Who said that? I’m not. I am just not swayed by material things.” Yu Qing got off the carriage, her expression didn’t change too much. She asked, “Where’s my sister?” It seemed everyone was excited about her wedding, everyone except her.

“She couldn’t wait for you. She has already gone to the main street.”

Upon not seeing her father, Yu Qing asked, “Where is my father?”

“Your father got held up with some work halfway. He will arrive a bit late.”

Yu Qing nodded upon hearing this.

Luo Rui said, “I heard that people from the Dragon Slaying Clan have made their way into Central Plains, eluding the pursuit of Qiao Fanfeng and others, they have now infiltrated deep into Central Plain. Your father and others are worried that they might cause trouble for the disciples of the Immortal and Demon Domains and disrupt the Alliance Leader selection conference.”

Yu Qing of course had heard something about it too.

Luo Rui further added, “Well, you don’t fret either. Your father is here, they can certainly handle things. You need not worry.”

Yu Qing slightly smiled and said, “What can I worry about? My martial arts skills aren’t even good, I wouldn’t even be of any help.”

“Who says so? This time, your marriage with Zhan Ze is the biggest help.”

Yu Qing grinned cynically upon hearing this and spoke, “The more you say it like that, the more I feel like I’m being sold off.”

“My girl, you and Zhan Ze are in love. How can you say you’ve been sold?”

“Don’t try to console me.”

“What’s wrong now? Having second thoughts? You do not need to mull over it. Zhan Ze treats you so well.”

“That’s exactly why I’m afraid.”

“So, it would have been better if he didn’t treat you well?”

“I fear that my feelings for him are just a whimsical impulse rather than genuine affection; I’m afraid I might end up hurting him.”

“Then why don’t you treat him better! You’re not still hung up over that boy, are you? It’s been several years already, even if he is alive, he would already be married with kids. There is no way he can still be waiting for you. You have been searching for him for so many years, it’s time to let go. Even if he isn’t married, he’d probably be an illiterate country bumpkin; I bet you wouldn’t even want to see him.”

Upon hearing this, Yu Qing gave out a faint smile. To be honest, she never forgot him, and yet he was so heartless, to disappear without a trace, leaving her in the dark whether he was dead or alive.

“Surely you’re not still thinking about him. What did he even look like, I don’t remember anymore.” Luo Rui said.

Ling Jian, who was further away, called out, “Qing’er, come over here.”

Luo Rui replied, “Ok, you guys go first, we will catch up soon.” The horse carriage had been led to the stables at the back. Yu Qing had been sitting on it for half the day, she started stretching her limbs to ease the numbness in her thighs.

“Are you truly considering backing out? If you do, no man would dare to come near you in your life.” Luo Rui said.

“Hey, girl, watch your mouth.”

“I’m just speaking the truth. Everyone knows you’re marrying Su Zhanze now. If you back out, who would dare approach you?”

“Are you threatening me?”

“Oh, my girl, you ought to be grateful for your blessings. Do you know your mother Xia Yue wanted to betroth Guo Yuyun to Zhan Ze? It is only because Zhan Ze likes you and Yuyun has no interest in him, that you’re in this position now.”

“I don’t like hearing you say that.”

“I’m presenting you the bare truth. None of what I have spoken is nonsense. Once you are married, you’ll be the wife of the Sect Leader of Immortal City. All the luxuries and prestige in your life will be well taken care of.”

“To be honest, I really don’t care for all that.”

“Stop clinging to hopeless things. People should move forward. If that boy was still here, it would have been reasonable for you to cling on, but it has already been five whole years since he disappeared. What more do you want to happen? Accept reality, be with someone who loves you, and stop torturing yourself.” Luo Rui opined.
