Chapter 246 - 246 234 The Symbol of the Dragon Slaying Clan
Chapter 246: Chapter 234: The Symbol of the Dragon Slaying Clan Chapter 246: Chapter 234: The Symbol of the Dragon Slaying Clan Ye Chen quickly grabbed another fishing rod from the house.
Seeing Meng Yan’s float moving, he said, “Alright, pull it up, there should be a fish.”
As soon as she pulled, the line reeled in making a crackling noise.
“Is it really that easy?” Cui Mengyan chuckled.
“Yeah, it’s that simple, did you think it was hard?” Ye Chen replied.
“I thought it required some skill.”
“Haha, it’s not that complicated.” Ye Chen set down his fishing rod and helped her unhook the fish from the line – it was a carp, which he then put in a bucket containing half a tub of water.
“Looks like it’s not that hard.”
“Hmm.” Ye Chen responded.
“So we’re just fishing?”
“Do you want to grill a couple to taste?”
“Really? That’s fantastic, I’m kind of hungry.”
Ye Chen then went to get some firewood, intending to start a fire nearby.
“Let me handle this, you continue fishing.” Meng Xiuluo wanted to take a look at the thatch house.
“Can you handle it?”
“Don’t worry, I’ve done this before, it’s not difficult.”
“Alright then, be careful, the knife is really sharp.”
“Don’t worry.” Meng Yan said and gave the fishing hook to Ye Chen.
While preparing to clean the fish by the well, she asked: “You just recently joined the New City Sect and you’re not even one of its disciples, so how come your martial arts skills are so good?”
“How do you know my martial arts skills are good?” asked Ye Chen curiously.
“Everyone says so; they say that no one in the New City Sect is better than you,” Meng Yan replied.
“They’re just talking nonsense.”
“Probably not, even if they made things up, it can’t be far off from the truth.” Meng Yan said.
Ye Chen had already thrown the worm-laden hook back into the water and answered, “I’m not as good as they say.”
“How could you learn martial arts so well on your own without a mentor?” She knew that Ye Chen had just joined the New City Sect, so without a good mentor, how could he possibly master martial arts?
“I happened upon a secret manual and haphazardly learned some martial arts techniques from it.” Of course, Ye Chen couldn’t just blurt out about the Red Demonic Spirit. He and this young girl had only just met, and he hadn’t even told Wei Yiling about the Red Demonic Spirit yet.
“Haphazardly learned, really? You’re being too humble. If one can simply haphazardly learn, I’d like to do that as well.”
“Yes, I guess I’m just a little clever and accustomed to hardship.”
“You must be somewhat clever, or else you wouldn’t have been able to learn so well.” It seemed that he was still somewhat wary, so she couldn’t push further without arousing suspicion.
Then, another splash of water approached.
Ye Chen pulled another fish up and said, “Now we have two.” as he tossed it over.
“Did you really teach yourself?” asked Meng Yan, fueled by her curiosity.
“Hmm, taught myself.”
Meng Yan wouldn’t believe these lies. Having learned martial arts herself, she knew how things worked. It was tremendously difficult to comprehend on one’s own without tremendous perseverance and a good mentor.
“What kind of martial arts is it?”
“I don’t know.”
“You don’t know?”
“Right, it’s a nameless book.”
“Haha, it truly is an unusual book.”
“You seem to be very curious about my martial arts skills.”
Meng Yan hurriedly replied, “I want to learn some, just enough for self-defense. Although I don’t necessarily have to become an expert, knowing some may help protect myself in dangerous situations. Then, I wouldn’t be as embarrassed as I was that night.”
“If you get the chance, I’ll teach you.”
“Really?” She feigned excitement on purpose.
“Only if you can bear the hardship.”
“Bear hardship. No problem.”
“But some people say, if you want to master martial arts, you must be as if you’re dead for a few years. What do you think?”
“Who told you that?”
Ye Chen quickly shook his head, saying, “No one, I’m just saying. Every day, you undergo repetitive training and slowly develop a liking for it. Although you may feel resistant at first, there’s no choice if you want to be good at it. You must gradually enjoy the tediousness. Once you’ve chosen this path, there’s no way out. Without some hardship, it’s hard to succeed.”
“It’s like simmering in oil.”
“It might be a bit similar. You have to be able to stand loneliness and withstand hardship to succeed. Glory is attainable, but others only see the glory, nobody cares about the effort you’ve put in to achieve it.”
“It seems like you’ve been through a lot.”
“While talent is needed, it alone is not enough. I don’t believe in geniuses anymore. Although geniuses exist, I’m not one of them. But if you really like something and can endure solitude, learning from within, there will be rewards.”
Meng Yan felt like she had heard these things before.
“So, are you still interested in practicing martial arts?”
“Yes, why not.” Even more so, Meng Yan felt that this guy must have a mentor, but he was unwilling to share. She didn’t ask any further. It seems she couldn’t just rely on asking – she also needed to take some action. There must be some secret in this thatched house.
She worked quickly, cleaning a few fish and stringing them on skewers before placing them on a grill. After washing her hands, she took a deep breath and said, “Ah, done.”
“Not bad. It’s good to have you here. If it had been that young lass, I would have had to do all this work myself.”
Meng Yan laughed at his comment.
“I’m serious, I’m not lying to you.”
“I didn’t say you were lying.”
“Light it up, and it’s done. My grilling skills aren’t the best, so I might char it.”
“Right, light it up, I’ll do the grilling.”
“Should we use some seasoning?”
“Right, let me get the seasoning.” Ye Chen hastily put down his fishing rod, ran back to his room, and brought out some special sauce that he used to use.
“Hasn’t it gone bad?”
Ye Chen sniffed it and said, “It should be fine.”
“You can smell that?”
“No, just a sniff, it shouldn’t kill us.”
Meng Yan giggled as she lit the fire.
Ye Chen strung those fishes, not too far from the fire, and not too close.
“What’s that you’re wearing around your neck?”
Ye Chen touched his neck and said, “Jade Ring.”
“Can I take a closer look?”
Ye Chen quickly took it off and handed it to Meng Yan, who suddenly became serious.
Ye Chen asked, “What’s wrong, do you recognize that symbol?”
A Horned Dragon was engraved on the Jade Ring, how could she not recognize it? She quickly said, “No, I don’t.” She gave a faint smile and asked, “You don’t know what symbol that is?”
“I don’t know, my mother never told me.”
“Your mother gave it to you?”
“My mother said it was left to me by my dad. That’s the only thing he left me.”
“Your dad, who’s your dad?”
“Ah, let’s not talk about that.”
“Why, you don’t like your dad?”
“Ah, it’s a long story. My mother and I, standing in front of him, he doesn’t even recognize us,” Ye Chen said.
“How is that possible?”
“He has a new wife and child now.”
Meng Yan smiled faintly and said, “That’s really despicable.”
“Ah, let’s not talk about these sad things.”
Meng Yan, afraid she might have seen it wrong, looked closely again. There was no mistake, it was that symbol. How could she not know? How did the Dragon Slaying Clan’s item ended up in the Wastelands? It really surprised her, she needed to ask the Zen Master to clarify. She didn’t know what it was, but she recognized the symbol.
“You hate him so much, yet you still keep what he left you.”
“It’s the only thing. I’ve been wearing it since I was little. Might as well keep wearing it. Hating a person is one thing, hating a thing seems unnecessary.”
Meng Yan nodded and said, “If you dislike it that much, why don’t you give it to me.”
Ye Chen was surprised. Could this girl know the secret of this item? He said, “Haha, I can give you other things, but this is the only thing my mother left me.”
“I was just joking with you, don’t take it seriously.” She returned the Jade Ring.
Ye Chen put it back on.
“Have you heard of the Dragon Slaying Clan?” Suddenly, she realized she may have misspoke.
“Dragon Slaying Clan, yes, people at the inn have been talking about it these past days. They say the Zen Master is likely a member of the Dragon Slaying Clan. I don’t know if it’s true or not.” Suddenly, she was puzzled, why did this homeless girl know about the Dragon Slaying Clan? She asked, “How do you know about the Dragon Slaying Clan?”
“Well, I heard it on the street.”
Ye Chen quickly nodded.
“Don’t worry, just stay with us. If we have a meal, you’ll be included.”
“Wouldn’t I be intruding?”
“We’re friends, there’s nothing to intrude. Don’t overthink.” Ye Chen said.
Meng Yan giggled upon hearing this.
“Everything I said is true.”
“I’m afraid Ling’er will misunderstand, thinking there’s something between us, it might affect your relationship. After all, her father arranged for you two, you could get married any day.”
“Huh, I haven’t agreed yet.”
“You haven’t agreed! But you’re not a disciple of the New City Sect. Why did you choose to stay and help the New City Sect?”
“Well, Sect Leader Wei was injured, wasn’t he! With all the changes that suddenly occurred, I have lived in Wasteland City for several years. I have feelings for this place, I think the New City Sect is pretty good. If I can help, I will, they asked for my help anyway, so, I stayed. Doing something feels quite meaningful. I also want to see if I can really stand on my own.”
“So, you’re really kindhearted.”
“Haha, really!”
“A lot of people have left out of fear, but you chose to stay despite the danger. Isn’t that because you’re a good person?”
“It’s not entirely like that, after all I also want to do something. Besides, if we really can’t hold on anymore, with my skills, it wouldn’t be too hard to survive.”
“Could it be that girl, you can’t bear to leave her?”
“How is that possible? I won’t easily get entangled in love affairs.” Ye Chen confidently said.
“Don’t be so absolute, maybe you like her, you just don’t dare to admit it.”
Ye Chen chuckled at this.
“Don’t believe what I said?”
“No, I just haven’t thought about it.”
“When you can’t leave her in the future, you won’t say that anymore.”
“Maybe, but for now, I am free. I want to make a difference, I enjoy this freedom.” Ye Chen flipped the fish and seasoned it again, and the aroma filled the air.
