Chapter 245 - 245 233 The Doubts of Mu Wan Lan

Chapter 245: Chapter 233: The Doubts of Mu Wan Lan Chapter 245: Chapter 233: The Doubts of Mu Wan Lan Meng Yan had adapted quickly, no longer showing the shyness she had the night before.

Later, Ling’er and Wan Lan left.

Suddenly, only Ling’er and Ye Chen were left in the courtyard.

Ye Chen, messing with a fishing rod, was asked by Meng Yan who was watering flowers on the side, “Are you going fishing?”

“Yes.” Ye Chen continued fiddling with the fishing rod.

“Isn’t there supposed to be a war starting soon? And you still have time for fishing?”

“The war has nothing to do with me, I’m just a small fish, can’t make much difference.”

Meng Yan responded with a light laugh, “That’s not what they say. They talk about how you defeated the No. One Thieves, how you surrounded them, earned the Sect Leader’s favor, and even want you to become the Sect Leader, promising Ling’er to you.”

“That’s all joking around, don’t take it seriously.”

“Joking? Really? The Sect Leader said it himself, how could it be a joke?”

“Hehe, only a fool like me would believe it.”

“It can’t be, you even saved the Sect Leader.”

Ye Chen exclaimed in surprise, “Wow, you just arrived, but you already know everything.”

Meng Yan quickly explained, “Oh, I was over by the kitchen, I overheard some of the maids talking.”

“They even have time to gossip about this.”

“I just happened to overhear, you have done so many important things, they were all talking about it.”

“They seem to have plenty of time to waste.”

“The Sect Leader, letting you live with his daughter, how could that be a joke? He must really have taken a liking towards you.”

“Hehe, he’s just tricking me, he wants to hold on to me, make me help them, not let me leave, he’s deliberately doing this.”

“You want to leave?”

“At any moment.”

“Where would you go?”

“Back to the Central Plains, anywhere will do.”

“Central Plains, are you from Central Plains?”

“Yes.”

“Aren’t you a disciple of the New City Sect?”

“No.”

“Then why would they let you become their Sect Leader?” asked Meng Yan.

“Well, you obviously don’t know, although the New City Sect is huge, there are not many people who can lead them, I have talents, Wei Sisan thought I was a promising prospect, after I accidentally saved him, he didn’t know how to retain me, so he came up with this idea, even offering his daughter.”

“There’s such a thing, to be forced onto someone else.”

“Yeah, how could such a thing happen, but it’s all true.”

“That means he highly values you.”

“So they say.”

“But Ling’er isn’t bad either, she’s so pretty. If I were a boy, I would fall for her.”

“Average, she’s just passable, but a bit dumb.”

“Not just passable, she’s exceptional.”

“Compared to you, she falls short.”

Meng Yan laughed and said, “You really know how to joke.”

“I’m serious.”

“How could Ling’er let her father betroth her to you, doesn’t she have her own opinion?”

“What could she argue, I’m so excellent, marrying me, she should be satisfied. How difficult it is to find someone as handsome and excellent as me.”

Meng Yan giggled.

“You think I’m exaggerating, don’t you?”

“A little.”

“That’s because you don’t know me well yet. If you knew about my abilities, you wouldn’t think so.” Ye Chen continued, “We’ve known each other for too short a period.”

“Where are you going to fish?” Meng Yan asked.

“Over at West Lake. Want to come?”

“Can I? Won’t I be disturbing you?”

“Not at all, not in the slightest, I actually wanted to find someone to chat.”

“I’m worried that you might have a date over there, and I’ll be intruding.”

“No, don’t listen to that nonsense. I don’t have that many crushes, I’m pretty clean.”

Meng Yan stood up, putting down the work at hand.

Ye Chen said, “You don’t have to tire yourself, just doing enough is fine.”

Meng Yan ran off giggling to her room, tidied up a bit, and then came out.

Ling’er and Wan Lan came back with food, but Ye Chen and Meng Yan had left.

Ling’er anxiously asked, “Where are those two?”

A maid who was working responded, “They left with a fishing pole, they should be going fishing.”

“Fishing? Absolutely not, they must be plotting some mischief again.” Ling’er vehemently said.

Wan Lan laughed hearing this, “Those two make quite a pair.”

“Like hell they do.” Ling’er anxiously asked, “Where did they go fishing?”

“We don’t know.”

Wan Lan guessing, “Did they go back to Liuye Manor?”

Hearing this, Ling’er thought it highly likely and said, “I need to check.”

Wan Lan asked, “Are you really going to step in?”

“I’m worried he’ll stir up trouble.”

Wan Lan gave a slight smile and said, “You’re worried they’ll develop a romantic relationship, aren’t you?”

“No way, I’m worried that naive girl doesn’t know any better and would be deceived by him.”

But Wan Lan countered, “That girl is smarter than both of us. She’s not nearly as clueless as you make her out to be. Plus, she’s quite good at bridging the gap with others. She’s already got everyone wrapped around her finger, even the kitchen staff.”

“Really, she’s even got in with the kitchen staffers?”

“If it keeps going like this, I could retire.”

“No way, you claim she’s that capable?”

“She’s very clever, always makes herself familiar with people around her first, wherever she goes.”

“Isn’t that an exaggeration? She’s only been here for a day, not even a full day at that.”

Wan Lan explained, “It’s the truth, not as shy as you say. If you really fancy that monkey, be careful. If it’s possible, better to send him away than to come back crying later when no one can help you.”

Although Ling’er never admitted it and remained silent on the surface, she knew Ling’er was somewhat fond of that monkey. If she couldn’t even discern that much, then all these years of friendship had been in vain.

Remembering the previous night, Ling’er felt shy and scared, innocent and pure, not at all like what Wan Lan had depicted.

Wan Lan sighed, “Anyway, I don’t think she’s as simple as you think. Claiming she’s just an ordinary poor girl, I don’t buy it. I get the feeling she knows more than she’s letting on, especially when it comes to fostering relationships with others. She’s not shy at all.”

“Really? Did I misjudge her?”

“Hehe, I don’t know. But like I said, you better be careful.”

“It shouldn’t be like this.”

“What should or shouldn’t it be! Just take heed, girl!”

“Are you trying to scare me?”

“Hehe, If I were you, I’d rather be safe than sorry.” Wan Lan finished and wandered off.

Ling’er sat in the courtyard, lost in thought.

As she was leaving, Wan Lan tossed out one more comment, “That girl isn’t simple. I suspect the incident from last night wasn’t what it seemed.”

Ye Chen, accompanied by Meng Yan, headed back to where he used to live. When they arrived at Liuye Manor and pushed open the gate, Meng Yan asked, “Isn’t this someone else’s court?”

“No, I used to live here.”

“You lived here?”

“Yes, I’ve lived here for several years. It’s only been abandoned for a couple of months.” Ye Chen ran inside, fetched a bucket of water, a stool, and offered one to Meng Yan, adding, “The environment here is pretty good, right?”

Meng Yan looked at the calm lake surface and a few small boats sailing past and nodded, “Not bad. You really have a knack for choosing places. It’s a great spot for a date.”

Ye Chen laughed, “It’s just really tranquil, a bit removed from the bustling streets.”

“Not at all, it’s peaceful here, I quite like this place.”

“Really?”

Meng Yan glanced outside, then suddenly asked, “Isn’t that Sky Lake Manor across the lake?”

“Yes, that’s Sky Lake Manor.”

“I heard that after New City occupied Gua Zhengnie’s mansion, they moved across.”

“Yes, they did move there, but then assassins in black broke in and left it in disarray. It’s going to take them some time to sort it out.” Ye Chen walked toward a willow tree by the lake, where he spotted an open patch of land, and pulled up a bucket of water from the well.

“Did you and Ling’er know each other before?”

“We met once, when we were kids.”

Meng Yan glanced around and asked, “What does ‘met once’ mean?”

“I saved her.”

“When you were kids?” Meng Yan asked offhandedly.

“Yes, that year, I had just arrived in the Wastelands, on my way to Wasteland City. I ran into them on the road. That night, I was on a mountain top stargazing when a group of black-clad men came to kidnap her. I managed to save her by luck.”

“So, she hasn’t repaid you yet, offered herself to you in gratitude.”

“Hehe, let’s not bring that up.”

“What other interesting things happened?”

“Interesting things! Incredibly clingy, clingy to the point that I can’t break away.” Ye Chen said.

“No way, she might actually like you.” Meng Xiuluo might have only known that girl for a day, but she could tell.

“I don’t understand how girls think about this kind of thing.”

“Girls aren’t likely to readily admit their feelings to others, because they’re shy. They’re not as bold as boys.”

“Really?”

“Of course, it’s true. As a girl myself, I understand this best. If a girl likes you, she won’t readily reveal it.”

“Shy.”

“Yes.”

“I sort of feel the same way. I asked her, and she didn’t dare to admit it.”

“So, do you like her?”

“I… have somewhat of a liking for her, I guess. Not exactly love.”

“Hehe, you don’t want to admit it, do you? You probably like her.”

Ye Chen laughed, “I haven’t really thought about it.”

“How can you not think about it? You’re not getting any younger. It’s time to put some serious thought into it.”

Ye Chen asked, “Would you like to go fishing?”

“Is there a fishing rod?”

“Yes, there’s one more rod in the woodshed. I’ll give you this one, and I’ll go get the other one from inside.” Ye Chen stood up to go inside, then asked, “Do you know how to fish?”

“Never learned.”

“It’s easy. When you see the float moving, it means a fish is biting. You’ll get the hang of it after trying a couple of times.” Ye Chen said.

Meng Xiuluo was not interested in fishing. Her mind was elsewhere, curious about what Ye was really like. She didn’t dare ask too many questions for fear of drawing attention, but she believed there was something extraordinary about him if Wei Sisan had set his eyes on him. He couldn’t possibly be average, let alone a simpleton. How could the New City Sect easily hand over the Sect Leader position to a young man? If he wasn’t extraordinary somehow, it wouldn’t make any sense.
