Chapter 1316 - 1316 1302 Searching for Someone
Chapter 1316: Chapter 1302: Searching for Someone Chapter 1316: Chapter 1302: Searching for Someone “Such a thing would never happen here, at our inn. It never has happened before.”, the innkeeper said, as if she knew the young man had some clout and was afraid someone would smash up her inn.
The Red Demonic Spirit had already stepped back.
Ye Chen didn’t want to waste words persuading her and asked, “I heard from the manager that you and he take turns managing the cash at the front desk?”
The matron replied, “Yes, there must always be someone at the counter, if not me, then him.”
“Your husband?”
“My husband is generally in charge of things outside, such as goods needed by the inn; this includes food, various drinks, and other necessities. So, I’m basically in charge of the inn’s affairs, with the manager assisting.”
“I see.”
“Nothing like this has ever happened at your inn?” Ye Chen asked with a hint of suspicion. He couldn’t fully trust this inn as he had heard that many shady inns conducted their businesses while also engaging in harmful side activities, which were quite common.
“I swear boldly that such a thing has never happened before,” the innkeeper said, seemingly afraid of being disbelieved, and added, “You can ask around.”
Ye Chen looked into her eyes. He could tell if she was even slightly nervous. This was part of the experience he had gained after becoming Sect Leader.
The innkeeper seemed to be aware of his significant presence. Just last night, a group of people had dined here. It was better to avoid trouble after all since someone had gone missing and was surely in a hurry to find them. She suggested, “Could they have gone out and forgotten to come back?”
Ye Chen didn’t want to explain that and said, “Just answer my questions.” He then returned to the subject and asked, “Today, have you encountered someone with an androgynous voice in the inn, rather deep, around the age of twenty?”
It seemed the manager had already spoken to her.
She became silent, as if reminiscing. It could be that the day’s patrons were indeed too numerous.
Ye Chen reminded her again, saying, “It could be someone checking out, during the checkout, did you come across such a person… possibly not alone, they might have had companions.” Yun’er was quite skilled in martial arts, to subdue her wouldn’t have been easy, especially for someone around the age of twenty. Yun’er shouldn’t have been that weak.
Upon hearing about the checkout, and the possibility of companions, it grabbed her attention and jogged her memory. She said, “I think there was such a person. She only mentioned checking out rooms two-one-four and two-one-five, and then handed me the silver. She was followed by four or five men who all seemed skilled in martial arts. The voice was a bit deep and somewhat androgynous.”
“How do you know they were skilled in martial arts?”
“Because they carried swords. However, one of them had a facial injury that looked fresh.”
At this moment, the Red Demonic Spirit came in again.
“A fresh injury? Was it a cut from a sword?”
“No, his eyes were bloodshot. If it wasn’t from a bump, it was the kind you get from a punch.”
Ye Chen asked further, “That girl, how old did she seem, any features to note?”
After recalling for a while, the innkeeper said, “Around twenty or so, she looked very imposing. Although she was with a few men, she seemed to be the leader—serious, forthright, and also very beautiful with big eyes. Just like a flounder gazing back at you, a real beauty.”
“Just her and a few men, no one unconscious, or carrying a box or anything?”
This reminder helped the innkeeper recall further, “Right, they were carrying a box.”
“Are you sure it was a box?”
“Yes, it was the two fellows behind them who carried it out.”
Red Demonic Spirit looked at Ye Chen, who glanced back at her before asking, “When did they check in?”
“Last night.”
Ye Chen rubbed the back of his head. It seemed she had indeed been kidnapped by those people. He asked again, “Do you know who they are?”
The innkeeper hastily replied, “Definitely not people from this island. I can assure you of that. There aren’t many people on the island, and I’ve lived on this island for over a decade. If those people resided here, we would definitely remember them. You know, we greet everyone we meet on the island, whether we know them or not, but they didn’t do that.”
“Is there anyone on this island involved in something like, say, human trafficking?”
“Well, there is, but traffickers wouldn’t dare to abduct someone directly from the inn. They snatch people, usually from the streets or maybe from smaller inns. They’d never be so bold as to target a large inn like ours. You know, there are more people here. If someone really shouted for help, people would come running, and the traffickers could suffer a loss, likely getting caught.”
“Perhaps they took the risk because they saw someone particularly beautiful.”
“That possibility is still very low. They’d generally pick someone on the outer streets where they could escape if they failed.”
Ye Chen’s head throbbed painfully. He was somewhat at a loss as to what to do next.
“Do you recognize those people?”
“If they’re caught, I’ll certainly be able to recognize them.”
“Do they look like traffickers?”
The landlady said, “You completely couldn’t tell, I thought that girl seemed like an educated person. Even if she was a human trafficker, she must be an extremely clever one. Didn’t look around in a frenzy, very calm. I remember on the night they arrived, they asked for a room and didn’t eat downstairs. They went straight to their room and had our people deliver food to them.”
“Right, when did they leave?”
“At noon, that was when the manager left; it was I who settled their bill.”
“I also want to ask, did we arrive at the inn first, or did they?”
“Surely you guys arrived at the inn first.”
Ye Chen let that landlady go.
Red Demonic Spirit looked at Ye Chen and said, “She must have been taken by them.”
“We might really have been targeted by unknown human traffickers the moment we entered the inn,” Ye Chen said.
“Is it because we arrived at the inn?”
“Don’t know, maybe yes, maybe it was just a coincidence,” Ye Chen felt somewhat confused at this point. If the girl was really taken away by human traffickers and had left Gu Island, where could he even begin to search? It was like looking for a needle in the ocean. Finding her would take who knows how long, and by then, it was uncertain whether they had already left or not.
“I’m sending people to search now.”
“Where will you search? What are you looking for?”
“Of course, I’ll ask around about that girl, as well as about the local human traffickers.”
Ye Chen called out, “To the seaside, go check every port.” Regardless of whether they had already left or not, Ye Chen wanted to make one more effort. Maybe they hadn’t left yet, of course, that was just wishful thinking.
“I’ll send people to search the ships that have set out to sea, you calm down for a moment, have something to eat.” It was already midnight, everything was silent, and Ouyang Yue and her group had long since departed.
Red Demonic Spirit asked the waiter to prepare something for Ye Chen to eat and then said, “Maybe they haven’t left, they just left this inn, because they probably knew they would be exposed sooner or later, and went to another inn instead.”
Ye Chen could only think this way.
“I’ll have people check each inn for that girl.”
“Alright, go ahead,” Ye Chen desperately tried to calm himself down.
The streets were already much less crowded.
Red Demonic Spirit went down to get busy again.
Ye Chen, eating food that he couldn’t even taste, wondered were they really human traffickers? But the landlady had said they didn’t seem like traffickers. If they weren’t traffickers, why would they target a girl? It seemed that the only explanation was that Yun’er was too beautiful and just happened to come across them at this inn, so they took the opportunity to abduct her.
That seemed to be the only explanation.
If they had taken Yun’er, they certainly would have planned to leave. There was only one way off the island: by ship. According to the landlady, they weren’t island locals, so they wouldn’t stay on the island for long. They had just arrived at the inn last night, could they have already left today? That possibility didn’t seem large; it would have been too hasty. They probably just left the inn.
Following Ye Chen’s instructions, Red Demonic Spirit began dispersing people and, based on the landlady’s description, started the search around the island.
But most of the inns had already closed for the night, making the search difficult. However, Ye Chen knew that the time was slipping away, and the window to find Guo Yuyun was rapidly narrowing. Now, time was of the essence.
After giving orders, Red Demonic Spirit returned and said, “If there’s any news, we will know very quickly.”
Ye Chen nodded.
“Find out which ships arrived yesterday and haven’t left yet.”
“That’s right, if they checked into the inn yesterday, that means they must have arrived on the island yesterday. But I think there are quite a few ships here. Even if they came over by one, they might not leave on the same one.”
“I know what you mean, but it’s also very possible that they left on the same ship,” Ye Chen continued, “Check if there are any ships that came yesterday and are leaving today.”
If Yun’er had truly been taken away, this lead might help track them down later on. Of course, he hoped that those who took Yun’er hadn’t left. He prayed that Yun’er was still on this island.
Red Demonic Spirit nodded slightly and said, “It would be good if Ouyang Yue and her group hadn’t left.”
Ye Chen understood what he meant. The island might only be as large as a small town, and sending out hundreds of people was stretching resources thin. He said, “Let everyone make an effort.”
Red Demonic Spirit said, “Don’t worry, they won’t complain about anything.”
“Have someone draw a portrait of Yun’er and look for her everywhere.”
“If Yun’er has been captured, how could anyone still see her?”
“I know, but it’s also possible that by chance, someone did see her. It’s indeed like looking for a needle in a haystack, but we can’t stop trying. Maybe we’ll get lucky.”
