Chapter 1073 - 1073 1059 Older Sister or Younger Sister
Chapter 1073: Chapter 1059: Older Sister or Younger Sister Chapter 1073: Chapter 1059: Older Sister or Younger Sister Nangong Yan looked ahead, halting in utter hopelessness as she stood there for a long time, certain that Ouyang Yue and her father had entered the dark zone.
She wondered if they were still okay, and Qiandu Xiang had also gone in.
How could she possibly help them? Nangong Yan’s thoughts dispersed as she pondered.
Someone came up behind her, it was Shao Hengjiang. Seeing that the girl was still standing there, he walked over.
Nangong Yan hadn’t noticed him yet, but she knew a storm was coming and said, “Ah, Xiyue Island.” She didn’t know what awaited everyone, and she felt somewhat melancholic.
“Girl, go down first.”
Nangong Yan was startled, not expecting Shao Hengjiang to be right by her side. Suddenly, she remembered what Ye Chen had said about wanting to recognize her as his goddaughter, and the thought made her feel strange, as if he didn’t seem so much like a pirate anymore.
Shao Hengjiang looked into the distance and said, “A big storm is coming. Don’t go outside unless you have to.” Night had already fallen, and encountering a storm at sea was dangerously enough, but at night, it was even more perilous.
The flashing lightning struck one after another, bright then dark, as if haunted by ghosts, with no warning at all, appearing either to her left or right. She was truly afraid it would strike her head, and in this night, the thunder rumbled much louder than during the day.
Nangong Yan, seeing that he was concerned for her, felt somewhat baffled and wanted to say something, to ask him what exactly his relationship was with her mother. But as she raised her finger, she suddenly felt embarrassed to ask. What was the point in asking? So, she lowered her head and went straight down to the cabin.
Who wouldn’t be curious as to why this man would spare her for her mother’s sake and had painted so many portraits of her? What exactly was his relationship with her mother? But the moment she thought of her father, she couldn’t bring herself to ask. After all, this was her father’s love rival. What was the point in asking about these things?
The sea waves began to surge, and the ship slowly started to sway, shaking more and more violently, as a light rain began to fall.
Nangong Yan returned to the cabin. Ye Chen lay on the floor, looking at the Secret Manual, and Nangong Yan seemed deflated.
Ye Chen smiled and asked, “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.”
“You’re out of ideas, aren’t you?”
Nangong Yan felt her mouth dry, gulping down several cups of tea before she could ease her discomfort, murmuring, “What’s the use of reading that book? You could go mad at any moment, what’s the point?” She had heard from Red Demonic Spirit that the Sacred Spiritual Stone might be able to destroy the ring, but it wasn’t a sure thing.
“If you think it has meaning, then it has meaning. If you think it doesn’t, then it doesn’t. It’s all about how you see it.”
“You speak as if you’re just farting, as if you’ve said nothing at all.”
“I’m telling the truth. Have you ever heard of ‘to hear of one’s death in the morning’?”
“Don’t talk to me about those life philosophies, they’re pointless.” Nangong Yan was still somewhat unwilling to give in, but now it was clear she couldn’t stop it anymore.
“Right, indeed, great truths are useless. What’s most important to a person is taking care of their own belly.”
“Aren’t you worried about that girl you’re trying so hard to save, that she might marry someone else? Have children for someone else?”
This girl was really malicious, insisting on saying such things to provoke him. He wouldn’t let her get her way.
“That would be quite good. At least I wouldn’t feel guilty, nor would I feel that I owed her anything,” thought Ye Chen. If she really could find someone who would love her dearly for a lifetime, that wouldn’t be so bad.
“For her to be so stunningly beautiful and then just marry someone else, wouldn’t that be a pity?”
Ye Chen set aside the book in his hand and said, “It would be somewhat regrettable, but I understand one thing, not everything good is meant for you. In this lifetime, many things will happen, and who knows how many more such events will occur.”
Nangong Yan sneered, “It seems you have a lot of reflection on this.”
Ye Chen thought for a moment, “It’s not so much reflection, as reality is simply like this, when you think that you can’t live without that person, that’s when you haven’t grown up.”
“I bet you’re only a year or two older than me, you haven’t been through more than I have.”
“It’s not about that, even though I’m only a year or two older than you, I’ve definitely been through more.”
Nangong Yan had indeed heard quite a bit about him from Red Demonic Spirit and asked, “If you were given a chance to choose between the sisters, whom would you choose?”
“How silly can you get? I wouldn’t choose anyone.”
“Why wouldn’t you choose? How can that be?”
“There aren’t so many ‘whys’ in this world.”
“The sister treats you so well, you must feel guilty towards the other, right?”
Ye Chen didn’t speak, but he did hear her.
“I can understand that. I guess, if it weren’t for the Bell and Drum City incident, you wouldn’t have known that deep inside, you were still stuck in your childhood, liking her sister.” Nangong Yan looked at the stunned Ye Chen.
She wasn’t wrong; Ye Chen muttered, “That’s why the hardest person to understand in this world isn’t someone else, it’s yourself. You probably don’t even know your own true thoughts.”
“But someone’s sister has already gotten married,” Nangong Yan added, “but her husband has died, so it doesn’t really matter, right?” She glanced at Ye Chen again.
Ye Chen still did not speak.
Nangong Yan smiled faintly and said, “It indeed is a bit difficult to decide. I bet her sister also likes you a lot!” Of course, she was referring to Guo Yuqing.
Ye Chen recalled events from long ago, events that he had almost forgotten. Suddenly, they all came flooding back. He could feel that she had him in her heart, especially during those last few days on Dragonfly Mountain before they parted. He had noticed her being downcast and guessed she must have been as conflicted as he was.
“That really is a tough choice, having a sister who would commit suicide for you. If you two dared to be together, she would surely die to make you see.”
“Do you particularly enjoy watching others in agony?” Ye Chen said, somewhat defiantly.
“Seeing you like this now does make me quite happy.”
“Kicking a man when he’s down.”
“It seems you are still very conflicted. I think you might as well marry both of them,” she said, casting a sideways glance at Ye Chen.
Ye Chen knew this girl was mocking him and said, “I still don’t even know if I can survive this year.” Ever since he had been poisoned in Bell and Drum City, Divine Doctor Zhu had helped suppress it, but the poison had not been completely cleared and could flare up at any time. His survival thus far had been a stroke of luck.
“Have you never considered what if, one day, you actually recovered? How would you face them then?” asked a somewhat bored Nangong Yan.
How could Ye Chen not have considered this? He said, “I’ll talk about it when I really do recover.”
“Then can you tell me, would you choose the sister or the younger sister?”
Ye Chen exclaimed, “You really are annoying.”
Nangong Yan pondered for a moment and said, “I guess, you would choose the younger sister.”
Ye Chen, curious, asked, “Why is that?”
“Based on what you just said, people won’t stop living for someone else; they possess strong subjectivity, which means, you are not someone who wants to live in the past. And with her sister, it’s all in the past. You would likely choose the younger sister.”
Ye Chen didn’t want to engage with her, but her analysis was accurate.
“However, you had better hurry back before the younger sister has children with someone else, or she too will become part of the past.”
Thunder roared ominously.
As if the sky had fallen and the earth had collapsed, the rain poured down violently.
Ye Chen hurried over and closed the window that had been flung open by the storm, to prevent more rain from coming in.
The ship rocked increasingly violently, as if dancing on the sea’s surface. The waves roared menacingly, and the rain beat the deck without rhythm. The howling wind sounded like a monstrous creature screaming.
It felt as if the end of the world had come.
The thunder grew even louder, as if not loud enough.
“We’re not going to capsize, are we?” Ye Chen grew worried.
“Stop being a jinx,” shouted Nangong Yan.
“Aren’t you the one who most wants this ship destroyed? Then no one would compete with your father,” he said.
Indeed, she had thought that way in the previous days, but now she hoped to live longer and had no desire to drown in the vast ocean. Maybe she felt that Shao Hengjiang wasn’t too much a pirate and there was still hope for him.
Watching the dense lightning flash like haunting shadows, leaving behind deafening sounds that seemed to explode one’s chest, was still somewhat terrifying. Even though many preparations had been made, they were at sea, after all. If the vessel truly started leaking, or something went wrong, it was the ocean out there.
Boom, boom, boom…
It seemed as if the whole world was ending.
Ye Chen muttered, “Mother of mine, I wouldn’t be hunting for the Sacred Spirit Stone if it weren’t absolutely necessary.”
The ship rocked even more violently, causing everyone’s stomachs to churn ceaselessly.
Unable to sit still, Nangong Yan came over to check. It was truly frightening: night had fallen, and the storm was raging with fierce winds and dense lightning. The swaying of the ship made her even more anxious about whether it could withstand the storm, but she thought that Shao Hengjiang, after all, was a pirate. He had faced many storms, which to them were trivial matters.
But just then, a roar louder than thunder sounded. It was clearly the voice of a monster. What could have happened? Nangong Yan stood up.
“There isn’t a monster coming, is there?” Ye Chen grew anxious. It wasn’t as if the monster could pick the time, it had to come now.
With a bang, an impact sent teapots and teacups flying off the table, along with chairs and tables, as if suddenly, they had come to life.
