Chapter 66: good news behind the evil plan

One year passed...

Hunter had stopped pretending to be disabled without needing to reveal his lies. Even his mother no longer dared to separate him from Isabella. Everything seemed to go as planned. He successfully brought Isabella on a honeymoon to several of her dream countries, and later his grandfather gifted him a mansion that became their current home.

Life had taken a turn for the better. Returning to his usual activities, Hunter relaxed on the upper terrace, enjoying a cup of coffee paired with a croissant filled with strawberry jam. The dashing man, dressed in a sleek black suit, gazed ahead, occasionally sipping his coffee with calm composure.

"Hunter...!"

He jolted in surprise at Isabella’s sudden shout from the bedroom. He dashed inside to find her rushing toward him in excitement.

"Oh my God... It happened! It happened!" Isabella exclaimed, her face alight with enthusiasm.

"What happened?" Hunter asked, confused.

"This... You’re going to be a father!"

"What...?"

Hunter froze, frowning as he stared at the pregnancy test in Isabella’s hand. The word "pregnant" was clearly displayed.

"This is what we’ve been waiting for!" Isabella beamed with joy.

Hunter remained silent, his heart racing. His lips trembled as though he was at a loss for words, his eyes sparkling as they fixed on the test.

"Hunter... Are you not happy?" Isabella asked hesitantly.

"Am I dreaming?" Hunter countered, his eyes misty.

Isabella shook her head. "No, honey... You’re not dreaming. This is real!" she said, gently cupping Hunter’s cheeks.

Hunter took a deep breath, gazing deeply into her eyes before pulling her into an embrace. Closing his eyes, he began to imagine playing with a little girl resembling Isabella or a boy mirroring himself, along with the joyous reactions of his grandparents.

"Hey..." He pulled away from the hug. "We need to tell Grandpa and Grandma. They’ll be thrilled by this news... It’s what they’ve been waiting for!" he said with enthusiasm.

"No!" Isabella shook her head. "We can’t tell them just yet... We’re not prepared!"

"Prepared? For what?"

"I mean, we need to tell them in a better way—with proof—so they truly believe it and can fully share in our joy," Isabella explained nervously, sitting on the couch with a worried look.

Hunter quickly sat beside her, still holding the pregnancy test.

"What are you worried about? Why don’t you want to tell them?" he asked.

"I do want to tell them," Isabella said, placing her hand over his, her eyes softening. "But I want to do it right. We need more than just this test. I’m sure they’ll ask how far along I am. I wouldn’t even know how to answer that. It’s better if we see a doctor for a proper check-up first," she said anxiously, biting her lip.

Hunter gave a slight smile. "That’s easy. You don’t need to worry. We’ll visit an obstetrician this morning!"

"But you have to go to the office. You said you had a meeting with Davin’s father."

"It’s okay. I’ll call Robert to handle it!" Hunter said confidently, pulling his phone from his pocket.

Meanwhile, Isabella rested her head on his shoulder, swallowing nervously as her hands trembled slightly, still processing the surprise of her pregnancy. She gently touched her flat stomach, smiling softly at the thought of it growing with Hunter’s child.

"Robert, I need you to lead the meeting this morning," Hunter said once the call connected.

"But Sir... Mr. Robinson insists on meeting with you. He said it’s crucial for you, as the company owner and CEO, to be present. He and Davin are already waiting in your office," Robert explained with a nervous tone.

Hunter clenched his jaw, his brows furrowing.

"They have no right to dictate my schedule. Besides, I didn’t ask them to arrive this early!" he said sharply.

Isabella lifted her head, her concern evident as she noticed Hunter’s growing frustration.

"Do as I say, Robert. Handle the meeting, no matter what they say!" Hunter instructed firmly before ending the call with a sigh.

"Honey... I just gave you wonderful news, yet you immediately acted harshly toward others. It’s like you’re not truly happy," Isabella said, displeased.

"Hey..." Hunter gave her a faint smile, gently cupping her cheek. "Of course I’m happy. I’m ecstatic. I’m just being firm because I don’t want anyone to disrupt our joyous moment."

"But you’ve disappointed them..."

"That’s not a big deal..."

"But this concerns your business and your reputation. It looks like you’re disrespecting your uncle," Isabella added anxiously.

"Honey, you’re more important than anything," Hunter said softly. "I’m not trying to be cruel to them or let them down. I just want to focus on you and... our baby," he said, shifting his hand to gently touch Isabella’s stomach, still covered by her dusty-pink nightgown.

Isabella lowered her gaze and smiled. Her anxiety seemed to melt away, replaced by the warmth of Hunter’s affection.

"Now, get ready. We’re going to the hospital," Hunter urged.

Isabella nodded and stood, heading toward the dressing room while Hunter remained in the bedroom, occupied with his phone.

...

Meanwhile, Robert pocketed his phone as he entered Hunter’s office, finding Davin and his father, Hans Robinson, engrossed in their phones.

"Sir..."

"Robert..." Davin stood and approached him. "My father and I can’t afford to waste time here. Hunter should have started the meeting by now. We have a packed schedule today," he said, frowning.

"Um..." Robert swallowed hard, slightly bowing his head. "I’m sorry, but Mr. Brown can’t attend this morning’s meeting. He has delegated it to me."

"What?" Davin narrowed his eyes, turning toward his father, who had set his phone aside. "Dad, he’s clearly disrespecting us. We came all this way only for him to send his assistant. He won’t even meet us!"

Hans furrowed his brow and stood, adjusting his blue suit as he fixed his gaze on Robert.

"Is there a particular reason why he can’t attend?" Hans asked.

"He only instructed me to represent him, Sir. I informed him that you and your son were waiting, but he insisted," Robert explained, his head slightly bowed.

"This is an insult!" Davin exclaimed, clenching his fists. "He’s grown arrogant ever since he regained his mobility. Grandfather indulges his every whim, gifting him a mansion and this company. Now he acts like the crown prince of the Brown family!"

"Robert," Hans interrupted calmly.

"Yes, Sir," Robert responded with a nod.

"Summon everyone to the meeting room. I’ll join in five minutes," Hans instructed.

"Understood, Sir."

Robert nodded and exited the room.

"This is infuriating!" Davin fumed, his fists trembling.

Hans turned to him with a sly smile.

"Dad, why are you so calm? He’s trampling on our dignity. We look like beggars pleading for a partnership, and he treats us like we’re not even family!" Davin ranted.

"Let him be arrogant. Let him dance on our frustrations for now. But it won’t last long," Hans said coolly, picking up his phone.

Davin narrowed his eyes, puzzled by his father’s composure and confidence that Hunter’s happiness would be short-time.

"Sam... Do the plan I instructed yesterday. Now. The situation is no longer manageable," Hans said with a cunning smile, glance at Davin.
