Starting Today, I’ll Work as a City Lord
Chapter 210: All Thanks to Lord City Lord for Valuing Me

Today, the skies were clear and boundless. Everything seemed as if it had been reborn. Yesterday’s heavy rain had breathed new life into the land.

Splash, splash…

The waters of the Ghostly Water River lapped constantly against the docks.

Lyan stood in his Deputy Director clothes and armor from the Police Department, the traverse blade hanging at his waist. Behind him were three carriages, and his eyes were anxiously fixed on the downstream stretch of the Ghostly Water River. Today was the day his fiancée, Liza, was supposed to arrive.

“Why aren’t they here yet? They should’ve arrived by now… Could Baron Omar be refusing to let Liza and her family go?” Lyan was so anxious that he paced in circles, desperate to see his beloved and his family.

“Lord Lyan, no ships have docked yet today. Don’t worry too much,” Fuji said softly. He had been dragged out the door by Lyan as early as 7 a.m.

Fuji held the rank of squad leader in the Police Department. Because he had scored better than the others, Lyan had appointed him as a squad leader.

Lyan had spent all night reading the documents Liu Feng gave him, which included the test results of all 25 recruits. After reviewing them, he understood exactly the kind of people Liu Feng wanted- and they happened to align well with his own values. So, the highest-scoring candidates were all made squad leaders.

The 25 patrol officers were divided into five teams of five, each led by a squad leader. Their duty was to patrol the city and maintain public order in West Sun City every day.

As for guarding the city gates, that remained under the jurisdiction of the military. After all, the Police Department didn’t have enough people.

“Is that so?” Lyan sighed. It had been more than ten days since he’d last seen his family, and his beloved Liza. It was no wonder he was this anxious.

After living in West Sun City for a few days, and with Tori’s encouragement, Lyan had written a letter home asking both families to relocate to West Sun City. He’d already made up his mind- if it really came down to it, he’d just become a teacher at the elementary school. That would still be better than working as a lowly clerk in Blazing Horse City.

Still, he wasn’t confident. He didn’t know whether his family and Liza’s family would believe him and make the move. After all, they hadn’t seen West Sun City’s wonders firsthand- they might think he was just sweet-talking and lying to them.

“They’re here! Lord Lyan, a ship’s coming!” Fuji, sharp-eyed, spotted a blurry silhouette of a ship approaching from downstream.

“Really?” Lyan craned his neck and looked excitedly toward the gradually approaching vessels on the river, his heart pounding. Were his family members on board?

20 minutes later, a dozen ships docked at the pier. Lyan scanned the disembarking crowd, searching desperately for familiar faces.

“Lyan, you bastard, what are you looking around for?”

A choked, tearful voice called out from his side, making Lyan freeze. He turned his head slowly- and there stood his fiancée, Liza, not far away.

“I…” Lyan was momentarily speechless. All the words he had prepared were stuck in his throat.

“You- you what? You disappear for more than ten days, and now you expect us to come looking for you?” Liza shouted, eyes wide, her tone completely unlike her usual gentle self. Her slightly chubby face was full of resentment. What kind of groom missed his own wedding? He was lucky to not have a knife held to his neck for doing so.

“I…” Lyan lowered his head in shame. He had truly messed up this time- not only had he been played by Baron Omar, but he’d also couldn’t leave West Sun City.

A soft, rounded figure threw herself into Lyan’s arms, and a quiet voice whispered, “Do you know how worried we all were about you?”

Lyan hugged his plump fiancée, his eyes falling on his family and Liza’s family unloading their belongings nearby. They’d all come.

“I’m really… sorry.” A small smile crept onto Lyan’s lips as his eyes grew misty. Their trust made him want to cry.

“Idiot. You’re the pride of Blazing Horse City!” Liza said, shaking her head. “And the way you described West Sun City in your letter- we were all really curious.”

“You… believed me?” Lyan was stunned.

“My son, what nonsense are you spouting? If we can’t even trust our own family, then what kind of false world are we living in?”

Lyan’s father, carrying a large wooden trunk, arrived behind him, along with guards carrying more boxes.

“Exactly! I’m trusting you with my daughter, and you think we wouldn’t believe you?” Liza’s father smiled- then suddenly scowled and barked, “We’ll talk about this later. You made Liza cry for more than ten days. You also owe her a wedding!”

“Yes! I’ll make it up to her.” Lyan took Liza’s hand- one not at all smaller than his- and said solemnly, “In a few days, I’ll hold a proper wedding ceremony.”

“Hahaha! That’s more like it!” Liza’s father burst into laughter, brushing aside all his earlier complaints.

“Come on, everyone- let’s go home!” Lyan called out happily. This might just be the happiest day of his last two years.

“Home?” Liza paused. She remembered the letter had said he had been renting a place to live.

“Yup, I bought a house!” Lyan said with a boyish grin. “I’m now the Deputy Director of the Police Department in West Sun City. The Lord gave me a 50% discount on the house. That’s a huge benefit.”

Civil servants in West Sun City got perks. For someone like Lyan, a deputy director, buying a home came with a 50% discount- but only on the first property.

Someone like Fuji, a squad leader, got a 30% discount. The Police Department didn’t provide housing, so the 25 new patrol officers were all renting houses- except those who already had family homes in the city. Unless they were on duty, most preferred to live at home, which they felt was the best. Plus, their salary was quite a bit higher than that of enlisted soldiers.

“Deputy Director? What kind of position is that?” Lyan’s father frowned. The letter he’d received had said that his son wasn’t doing too well and had been set up by that bastard Baron Omar.

“Well! It’s a pretty high-ranking official. I’m responsible for the public order of the entire city.” Lyan explained it in simple terms.

“Wow! That’s even better than being a knight back in Blazing Horse City. You actually get to manage an entire city’s security!” The two families exclaimed in astonishment.

“It’s okay, it’s okay. It’s all thanks to Lord City Lord for valuing me.” Lyan’s face was filled with confidence. The charm of Knight Lyan had returned.

“Hurry up then! I’m so curious to see the West Sun City you wrote about!” Liza urged eagerly.
