Starting Today, I’ll Work as a City Lord
Chapter 209: Police Department Opens

“You go change your clothes too,” Liu Feng said when he noticed Lyan shivering. He didn’t want the future Deputy Director of the Police falling ill before even starting work.

“Yes, sir!” Lyan saluted and quickly jogged toward the warehouse.

The Police Department was divided into front, middle, and rear courtyards. The front courtyard was the main hall, used for reception and administrative duties.

The middle courtyard was the training ground for the Police. It housed the interrogation rooms, a warehouse, and a dining hall.

The rear courtyard held rows of jail cells and solitary confinement rooms used to temporarily detain prisoners.

The place Lyan and the others went to change was the warehouse in the middle courtyard, and it was also where the weapons were stored.

As soon as Lyan entered, his eyes went wide. Before him stood a row of half-naked men- every one of them muscular, though they were small and not very visible.

Lyan’s cheeks flushed red. It was humiliating how his, a knight’s, body couldn’t compare to the bodies of a bunch of militiamen. Thinking back, he hadn’t trained his body ever since Baron Omar arrived at Blazing Horse City over a year ago.

Sigh… He let out a resigned sigh and looked around the warehouse, noticing rows of metal lockers. Each person stood in front of one, changing clothes.

He walked up to one of the lockers, opened it, and found a neatly folded set of leather armor, a one-handed sword, and a piece of paper on top.

“What’s this say?” Lyan opened the note and grew increasingly surprised. “Rules for armor and weapon use?”

Note:

Each person gets four sets of uniforms (including winter wear). Damages during duty can be repaired. Damage caused privately must be compensated for. Uniforms cannot be worn while off-duty.

Each person gets one set of leather armor. It must be worn during patrols or missions.

Each person gets one traverse blade. If lost, you’ll be jailed.

Each person gets one Police Token. This represents the Police Department’s face. If lost, you’ll be jailed.

“…”

“So strict? Probably even stricter than the Royal Knights,” Lyan muttered.

He inspected the Police Token- a palm-sized (baby palm) token forged from refined steel, engraved with the words “Police Token”, encircled by a serpent-like creature with four legs. On the back were three strange symbols he couldn’t understand.

“This token alone would fetch several silver coins in the capital… No wonder you’d be thrown in jail for losing it.” After examining the token, Lyan picked up the vertically placed traverse blade. It felt lighter than his one-handed knight sword.

“This is called a traverse blade? What a strange name…”

Shing!

He unsheathed it- the blade flashed white, and Lyan was stunned. A single-edged blade, clearly also made from refined steel. Just this sword alone could sell for a gold coin- maybe even more.

“Yeah, lose this and you’d be locked up for life…” Lyan couldn’t even imagine the consequences. The equipment here was no worse than a full knight’s set- and in some ways, even better.

“But… why did the Lord call me here?”

Suddenly, Lyan froze as a thought struck him: Could Lord City Lord want to recruit me as a knight?

“No way…” Lyan dared not think further. Right now, he was poor and relied on Tory’s help to survive, occasionally doing odd jobs. Just a few days ago, he had even borrowed some silver coins from Tory to buy a house.

Can this be the start of my second career? Is my chivalric path of the knight finally being recognized?

Overwhelmed with emotion, he hurriedly put on the uniform and leather armor, stuffed the token into his chest pocket, grabbed the traverse blade, and dashed out of the warehouse.

By the time he reached the main hall, everyone else was already there. Realizing he was last, Lyan quickly took his place in the line.

Liu Feng looked at the twenty-six patrol officers in front of him with a stern expression, scanning each of their faces as he said solemnly, “Starting today, you are all patrol officers. The safety of West Sun City and its people rests on your shoulders.”

“Yes, sir!”

Everyone except Lyan shouted in unison, shocking him.

“Good. I hope you won’t disappoint me.” Liu Feng nodded with satisfaction. After military training, they already carried a strong presence.

His large investment had paid off- the leather armor they wore had been specially designed for the Police Department, flexible and suitable for active duty.

In the middle courtyard’s warehouse, there were also shields and small crossbows- prepared in case of riots within West Sun City.

“Go get familiar with the work environment. You officially start tomorrow,” Liu Feng waved them off. Rules and procedures would be later be taught by Buff.

Everyone dispersed, leaving only Lyan standing there dumbfounded, making Liu Feng wonder if something was wrong with his head.

“Lord City Lord, may I ask why you summoned me?” Lyan quickly saluted when he noticed Liu Feng looking at him. “I was once a knight. I am willing to serve you, my lord!”

“Oh?” Liu Feng stepped forward and poked a finger at Lyan’s chest. “I don’t care what you used to be. Knight, civil servant, commoner- it doesn’t matter. What I want is your future.”

“My future?” Lyan was stunned, then quickly understood and shouted excitedly, “Yes! My future is granted by you, my lord!”

“Not bad- you’re not stupid,” Liu Feng chuckled lightly, then turned and walked toward another area. “Follow me.”

“Yes, sir!” Lyan quickly followed.

They entered an office. Liu Feng sat at the main desk. Mina and Tess stood to one side, and Lyan obediently stood on the other.

“This room will be your office from now on.” As he spoke, Liu Feng took a few documents and a token from the drawer and placed them on the desk. “Take good care of these. Read them thoroughly. This token is yours.”

“Yes, sir!” Lyan nodded respectfully.

“Your uniform and armor are also here. As for the ones you’re wearing now, wash them and return them to the warehouse.”

This was the Deputy Director’s gear. Although Lyan might not personally patrol or catch criminals, he still had to be distinguished from the regular patrol officers. Sometimes, brains were strength too, and represented the face of the organization.

Tess’s leather armor was different as well- hers was brought from Earth. As the Patrol Captain, she also had her own independent office.

As for squad leaders and ordinary patrol officers, they worked in the shared office area in the main hall, though most of the time they’d be out patrolling.
