Chapter 998: Chapter 103: The Battle for Dignity

To accomplish something very important, yet always having someone buzzing around like a fly is incredibly annoying.

Has the time ripened?

Yang Yi spent a brief moment pondering, then decisively turned down the invitation from the Operations Division, feeling the time wasn’t right yet.

The tension escalated.

Yang Yi appeared helpless, spreading his hands and said, "This is CIA’s training camp; we are all professionally trained special agents. Just because you lost to me in a sparring match, you keep coming after me – what do you want? Don’t you think that not only is this unsportsmanlike, it’s genuinely despicable? Also, what if you lose again? Are you planning to pester me indefinitely?"

His words were discourteous; the final fig leaf had been removed.

A younger man stepped forward, looking as though he could hardly restrain himself from getting physical with Yang Yi.

Yang Yi didn’t flinch. He simply said indifferently, "This is a shooting range, if you plan on taking action here, think of the consequences."

Having said that, Yang Yi turned and continued shooting at the targets nonchalantly.

"Is this how a professionally trained special agent shoots?"

The middle-aged man tried to save face, but Yang Yi remained unperturbed, continuing his activity unbothered.

To leave or to stay was a dilemma, challenging him to a duel only to be ignored and ridiculed instead. It would be ridiculous to actually start a fight here; after all, everyone present was an adult. Such idiocy was unthinkable, especially considering the severe consequences that no one could afford to face.

But to leave in dispirited defeat was too humiliating, and more importantly, one’s superior would lose face.

While the three were at a loss with Yang Yi, who was impervious to their tactics, he changed his magazine and then nonchalantly said, "If you must regain the dignity of the Operations Division through me, it’s not impossible. We can have a fair duel, but not now. Call it a duel. You can go find the right candidate now, lest..."

"This has nothing to do with the dignity of the Operations Division; it’s just a private..."

"No, this is about the dignity of both the Operations Division and the Admin Division. You are from the Operations Division; you work in the field, while I’m from the Admin Division, sitting in an office. You can’t accept losing to me, is that it?"

Yang Yi laid bare the unspoken truth directly.

Looking at the three men, Yang Yi smiled and said, "Denial is pointless. You feel humiliated because field agents lost to an office agent, right? No worries, I’ll give you a chance to restore your dignity. But you’ll have to wait until I have the time."

The middle-aged man’s face turned ugly, and he got serious.

"Fine, when!"

"I said, when I have time, but I don’t right now. Go back and await notice. I will settle this before I leave the training camp, so don’t worry about me running away."

"Word is bond. We’ll wait for you!"

The middle-aged man departed after speaking, while Yang Yi continued with his shooting.

"Wow, is this like a battle of dignity between the Admin and Operations Divisions?"

After watching the three men leave, Ben exclaimed in surprise, then turned to Yang Yi and asked, "Why do you deliberately provoke conflict between the Operations and Admin Divisions? They originally intended to avoid this."

Yang Yi laughed and said, "It’s nothing, I just don’t want trouble. I need to concentrate on my training. Let’s continue."

Unperturbed by the interruption, Yang Yi spent the afternoon at the range, then returned to his room for dinner.

At that time, he received a call from Walter, and after that, he left the training camp to meet with Walter outside.

"You are deliberately starting trouble, and trying to escalate it, but why?"

Walter frowned, opening the conversation by questioning Yang Yi’s motives for stirring up the situation.

Yang Yi replied softly, "Where did you get the information?"

"I don’t need to surveil you, but now the entire Operations Division knows about it. Everyone is talking about an arrogant Asian who wants to represent Admin in a showdown against Operations. Buddy, such incidents are almost unheard of. Even if minor conflicts occur occasionally, they are never brought to the fore, let alone evolve into a battle of dignity between the Admin and Operations Division. Why take it this far, what’s your motive?"

Yang Yi spoke softly, "Of course, I have a motive: to inflate the situation. How could minor private conflicts cut it? I need to enter that man’s field of view."

Walter sighed and said, "I knew this was your goal, but... if you lose, Admin folks will be in an awkward position."

"If I win though, Operations will be the ones embarrassed."

Walter chuckled and said, "But can you win? Operations has many people here, but the ones who come to train are not their very best. If Operations recalls a real ace from abroad, could you still win?"

"I’m just a young man, very young. Operations recalling an agent from overseas, who is on assignment, would be embarrassing for them, don’t you think? And is that even likely?"

"It shouldn’t be, but if the Division’s dignity is at stake, then naturally it becomes possible."

Yang Yi exhaled and said, "Well, we’ll see when the time comes. Losing won’t be overly shameful for me. No matter the outcome, Operations will lose face, and my goal will have been achieved."

Walter sighed softly, then whispered, "We’ve guessed your goal, so I’m not here to interrogate you. I want to know if you need help hyping this up, to get more people aware of the duel; if so... our guy could give a push."

Porter was actually willing to help promote the duel, linking it directly with Aaron, but after some thought, Yang Yi softly said, "Let’s not. It would be too obvious. We’d rather play it slow and steady than appear too eager."

Walter nodded and said, "Okay, I just wanted to confirm your intention. Also, when do you plan to confront the Operations people?"

"Not sure yet, but I plan to get the helicopter pilot’s license first. Let the Operations people wait; not giving them a specific time will make it inconvenient for them to call people back."

Walter laughed and said, "Firstly, congratulations on passing Hegelhaus’s test – he isn’t someone easily impressed. Also, you’re the fastest person to get a pilot’s license in the training camp’s history. How does it feel to set a record?"
