Chapter 974: Chapter 979: The Water of the Rivers
This was an unexpected turn of events. Yang Yi hadn’t planned on buying Clint’s car back, because it would take too much time, but he never expected that the car he ended up purchasing was the very one Clint had sold.
In fact, Yang Yi had even asked, and upon learning that the seller had bought the car from a middleman, he hadn’t given Clint’s car a second thought.
But this was indeed a beautiful accident.
"Take a look at your car, it can only belong to you, I hope you like this gift."
Clint rested his hand on the hood, his face filled with infatuation, "Like it? I thought I’d never see her again, but... if it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have been forced to sell her."
Yang Yi could only shrug, "Uh, all I can say is sorry, and... can you give me my documents back now?"
Clint lifted his head, took a few deep breaths, and then handed over Yang Yi’s documents, "Are you really from the CIA?"
Yang Yi smiled as he received his documents, "Genuine."
"You’re actually with the CIA?"
Clint still looked incredulous, and Yang Yi said softly, "Sorry, I was carrying out a secret mission at the time."
Clint nodded, "For Brian? Oh, fuck, you don’t need to explain, don’t say anything."
Yang Yi could only respond with a smile.
Clint looked at Yang Yi before he spoke in a serious tone, "If you came to give me this car, then you’ve done that, now you can leave. I don’t want to have too much contact with you, I’m not going to thank you, but I won’t hate you from now on, alright? Let’s call it even."
Yang Yi laughed, "Won’t you invite me in?"
Clint shook his head, then said in a low voice, "No, I have to go to work. Jobs are hard to find, and I’m lucky to have found this night shift as a security guard, I can’t lose this job."
Yang Yi smiled, but walked towards Clint’s front door, "No, I need to sit in your house for a while, buddy. I have something to tell you. As for your job, believe me, you need not worry too much about it."
Instead, Clint fell behind, hurrying to catch up, though he didn’t know whether to stop Yang Yi from entering.
While Clint hesitated, Yang Yi had already reached the door, leaving Clint to call out loudly, "Honey, open the door, we’re coming in, don’t shoot!"
Yang Yi stopped, and Clint hastily opened the door, then gestured for Yang Yi to come in.
Once inside, a woman who looked somewhat haggard stood behind the couch with a shotgun in her hands, extremely anxious.
Yang Yi smiled and nodded to the lady of the house, then addressed Clint, "This must be your wife, right? Hello, it’s a pleasure to meet you, I am a friend of Clint."
Clint said to his wife, "Put the gun away. He means no harm, you didn’t call the cops, did you?"
After speaking, Clint reluctantly told Yang Yi, "Please sit."
Yang Yi took a seat, taking a moment to survey Clint’s house, then smiled, "Your home is very nice. Where are the kids? I remember you have two, are they not home?"
Clint said gravely, "They’re upstairs. Say what you’ve come to say, I’m almost late for work."
Yang Yi pondered for a moment, then said slowly to Clint, "You now know, I am with the CIA. But back in prison, I was kicked in without any chance of defending myself, I was helpless, and you were kind to me."
Clint responded coldly, "Nothing special, just a little affinity for a fellow enthusiast."
Yang Yi smiled, then said earnestly, "Right, to you it wasn’t much, but to me it was important. At the time, I really needed kindness from a friend, uh, the food in prison was really awful."
"Yes, prisoners can’t exactly expect gourmet meals."
Yang Yi smiled, "How many burgers did I eat from you? In prison, burgers are a luxury. Without you, I couldn’t have got them even with money. I think there must’ve been at least a hundred, and then there was fried chicken, uh, and pizza. When I was still a convict, I really looked forward to the days you were on duty because I could eat what I wanted, and that was truly a treat."
Clint was inherently a kind person. He intended to keep his distance from Yang Yi, but as Yang Yi recounted the past, Clint’s heart began to soften.
"Yes, back then... I actually did enjoy our chats, not just about racing."
Yang Yi smiled, "Actually, I lied to you. I never liked NASCAR or that team."
Clint gave a wry smile, and at that moment, his wife, still nervous, blurted out, "Clint! It’s time for work!"
Caught in a difficult spot, Clint waved to Yang Yi and said quietly, "If you want to have a chat, maybe you could come back tomorrow, I really should get going to work now."
Yang Yi exhaled. He reached into his clothing and pulled out a checkbook. Flipping it open, he slowly tore off a check and spoke solemnly, "This is a cashier’s check from the Bank of the Americas. I’ve specially opened an account at their Los Angeles branch and deposited a sum of money to make it more convenient for you to cash it."
After saying that, Yang Yi placed the check on the coffee table, and then said deliberately, "This is for one million dollars. You can take it to the bank and exchange it for cash anytime. Rest assured, the IRS won’t come after you for taxes, the money is clean, and you won’t have to worry about anyone troubling you ever again."
Hearing the figure of one million dollars, Clint’s wife finally put down the gun.
Actually, the gun fell to the ground because she covered her mouth with both hands in shock.
Yang Yi pushed the check forward, in front of Clint, then said gravely, "It’s up to you what you want to do with the money, you are free to choose. But I would suggest quitting the night shift security job and find something you like doing, like becoming a police officer. Uh, your record won’t have any blemishes. If you want, I can speak to the local police department for you. I have a way to make them accept you."
Clint stared blankly at the check in his hand, looked at the amount written on it, then asked in confusion, "Why?"
Yang Yi sighed lightly and said, "It’s rare for me to owe someone a favor, and there are not many who have made me feel indebted, but you are one of them. I owe you a favor, buddy, so I wish to repay your kindness with the utmost goodwill."
The grace of a single drop of water should be repaid by a spring flooding forth, but for Yang Yi, if someone gave him a drop of water, he would repay them with a river.
