Chapter 911: Chapter 916: Having a Gun Without Bullets

The transaction location was within a courtyard in the Green Zone. At eight fifty, Yang Yi and his six men arrived outside the transaction spot.

"This is the place, the address is correct."

Glancing at his watch, Yang Yi whispered, "Ten more minutes. We’ll wait outside until nine o’clock."

When it was nine o’clock in the evening, Anton stepped forward and knocked on the door.

The door opened, and after two burly men opened it, they sized up Yang Yi and his group. An impatient Anton said, "We are here to make a purchase, can we go in now?"

A very tall person gestured for Anton to raise his arms and then searched him before waving his hand, and then waved toward Yang Yi who was behind Anton, indicating that it was his turn to be searched.

"What a pain, hurry it up."

Yang Yi also appeared somewhat dissatisfied, yet he compliantly allowed himself to be searched.

When it was Zhang Yong’s turn, he opened the bag he was carrying, revealing a bag full of money, then placed the money on the ground and raised his arms to be searched.

Only after searching all six men did the tall searcher speak in a deep voice, "Go inside, follow me."

Leading Yang Yi and his group through a small door, they entered a large room carpeted with rugs, where Yang Yi saw Barbosa.

Barbosa, barefoot, lounged on a couch with two men standing behind him, and another person sitting opposite him with seven Middle Eastern-looking individuals standing behind.

"Who among you is Viper?"

Anton stepped forward and declared in a grave tone, "I am."

"From the United States, looking to make it in Iraq?"

"Yes."

Barbosa nodded his head and then said to the person sitting opposite, "They are the ones, wanting to buy some stuff from me, so I’m handing this deal over to you."

The person opposite Barbosa turned and gave Anton a look, then swept his eyes over Yang Yi and the others before demanding in heavily accented English, "The money, let me see your money."

Zhang Yong opened the bag and poured all the money onto the ground, then Anton pointed at the cash on the floor and said solemnly, "One million four hundred thousand, ten thousand a bundle. Can we see the goods now?"

The person seated across from Barbosa waved his hand, and then two people from behind him began to inspect the money. Meanwhile, another two people walked to the side and pulled open a door.

The opened door revealed guns and cardboard boxes.

In the meantime, Barbosa still casually lounged on the couch and chuckled, "The equipment you’re buying is high-end. I’ve been doing business here for a long time and rarely see customers like you. For mercenaries, I must admit, you are good customers."

What qualifies as a good customer, of course, is because they spend a lot of money.

Actually, Yang Yi looked down on the equipment they were buying, but for most mercenaries, what they had was top-notch gear.

Though not all could be equipped with a thermal imaging scope, at the very least each had a helmet-mounted night vision monocular, which was still the current mainstream standard. It should be noted that just these night vision devices accounted for half the transaction’s astonishment.

How much does a gun cost? If it were just the weapons, each person having ten thousand US Dollars wouldn’t be enough to use it all up; the majority of the 1.2 million US Dollars was spent on purchasing electronic equipment.

And this electronic equipment was an absolute luxury for mercenaries—luxury products that only high-end mercenary groups could afford.

With his hands in his pockets, Anton exuded confidence as he stated, "We are certainly good customers because we are the best mercenaries. If you want to make money, especially big money, you need to be stronger than others."

Barbosa added with interest, "Got any deals?"

Anton shook his head, "Not at the moment, but I believe we will soon."

Barbosa laughed. "Your gear is good, amongst the best in the whole of Iraq. But having good gear is obviously not enough. Besides, what interests me is that your guns are very ordinary. Can you tell me why? Since you have the money to buy so much good gear, why not get better guns?"

Shrugging his shoulders, Anton replied, "In this place, it’s better to use AKs. I don’t want to find myself needing 5.56 mm ammo and not being able to find any, while 7.62 and 5.45 caliber bullets are everywhere."

Barbosa sat up straight and extended his hand toward Anton, saying, "Buddy, take a seat. There’s no need for formalities. Since this is our first transaction, I want to know if you understand who I am?"

After hesitating for a moment, Anton said soberly, "I’ve heard of you, but I’ve always dealt with Russians, Polovich that is. But he disappeared, vanished. So, a friend recommended you."

Barbosa’s expression soured slightly because Polovich was under Big Ivan and his biggest competitor.

"You’ll find that dealing with me is your best choice, buddy. Polovich won’t have the range of goods I have here. Indeed, guns are actually the least of it. If you just wanted guns, anyone in Baghdad could sell them to you. But what about the quality goods you need? Like the active-duty U.S. Military radios, or the night vision goggles you want? Only I have them here, buddy. In all of Iraq, only I can sell them to you."

Having finished, Barbosa pointed to the person sitting opposite him, saying, "Mughal, he’s the one selling the gear to you this time. But I’m the one who supplied it to him. You understand, right? We’re the best and the biggest sellers in this market, buddy. You are a good customer and can contact us directly in the future. We won’t let you down."

So the person opposite Barbosa was Mughal, Yang Yi thought, his mind suddenly stirring.

The few bodyguards in the room... maybe it was time to strike.

After the money was counted, Mughal finally showed a smile and then told Anton, "Go check your gear."

Anton waved his hand, and everyone but him went into the little room where the equipment was kept.

The guns didn’t need much checking; Zhang Yong pulled back the bolt of a rifle to check the barrel, confirming that all the guns were brand new, while Yang Yi opened the cardboard boxes and took out one night vision device after another.

Before long, Yang Yi called out to Anton outside, "Boss, the numbers are correct. The number of guns is also correct, but there’re no bullets, not a single one, no grenades, no rocket launchers."

Anton’s brow furrowed, and then he turned to Barbosa, "We agreed that each rifle would come with five thousand rounds and six spare magazines. Where are the bullets now?"

With a wave of his hand, Barbosa said, "Ammunition isn’t part of the Green Zone transaction, buddy. Get your guns here and pick up the bullets outside the Green Zone. Why? I don’t want trouble in the Green Zone, especially with the guns I’ve sold."

No wonder Barbosa and Mughal had so few guards with them; they hadn’t planned for bullets. Without ammo, even the best guns were no more useful than a stick for burning, and Barbosa had no need to worry too much about several unarmed potential enemies.
