Chapter 909: Chapter 914: Schizophrenia
Doctors are respected everywhere, which should be a universal rule.
In Iraq, in Baghdad, particularly in the Green Zone, doctors are revered even more. Here, no one knows when they might get shot, and once someone is hit, a doctor who can save a life becomes extremely important—especially a well-known surgeon, who is not just important but also precious.
So when a few people having their meal learned that a famous war zone doctor in the Green Zone needed a few tables for dining, most of them didn’t complain and chose to share tables, vacating three tables for Yang Yi and his companions.
"I really didn’t expect this, you have quite a status here."
In response to Yang Yi’s admiration, Woody humbly said, "It’s nothing. In a place like this, doctors always get some special treatment. Oh, everyone, this meal is on me."
Woody patted his chest, and then he told his companions, who were sitting at three separate tables, "This one’s on me."
Nowadays, no one lacks the money for a meal, but when someone offers to treat, it’s still proper to express gratitude.
However, only when the menu was brought did everyone realize why Woody seemed so proud when he said he would treat.
It was damn expensive. Kebabs that cost less than a US dollar outside the Green Zone were five dollars each here, and vegetables were more expensive, but a skewer of grilled tomatoes for twelve dollars was particularly shocking.
Regardless of the cost, of course, they would still eat. After all, Woody certainly wasn’t short on meal money now.
After ordering the food, several people who had just been through a long flight began to relax, but Yang Yi was constantly observing the only new face among the travelers in secret.
Stone Statue, the man’s name reflected his characteristics.
Brian had only met Stone Statue a few hours ago, but neither Brian nor Paul showed the excitement or closeness of old comrades reuniting. The three of them sat together, but there was no interaction between them.
Even when there was talk, it was between Brian and Paul, who acted as if Stone Statue was invisible beside them.
Stone Statue really was like a stone statue, sitting upright in his chair. Even in a place full of soldiers, he still stood out as a distinctly different military man.
Silent and still, he resembled a statue.
But Stone Statue’s gaze was too sharp. His eyes were like a sharp knife, as if he wanted to see right into the heart of anyone he looked at.
Yang Yi was somewhat puzzled, as Stone Statue was like a blade, so sharp it was hard to overlook.
Or like a gun with a bullet in the chamber, waiting to pull the trigger.
Undoubtedly, being around someone like Stone Statue would not make one feel comfortable.
Yang Yi was curious about how such a man with such an exposed edge could be a sniper, since all the snipers he had met were reserved. It might not be quite fitting to use the term reserved, but certainly no sniper was as openly sharp as Stone Statue.
The first plate of skewers was delivered. When the skewers were placed on the table in front of Yang Yi and his group, Brian subtly slid the whole plate in front of Stone Statue.
Stone Statue picked up a skewer from the edge of the plate and began to eat.
Only after Stone Statue had picked up the skewer did Brian push the plate back, allowing everyone to help themselves.
Stone Statue had a unique way of eating, very slow, incredibly slow.
Yang Yi was hungry, and by the time he finished his first skewer and picked up the second, Stone Statue had only eaten two pieces of meat.
He chewed slowly and swallowed slowly, then picked up a bottle of mineral water from the table, twisted off the cap to take a small sip, screwed the cap back on tightly, and then tore off another piece of meat to chew at the same slow pace and swallow before again opening the mineral water, taking a small sip, and tightening the cap.
Mechanically repeating meaningless actions, Stone Statue’s hands were smeared with the grease from the grilled meat. After he finished the first skewer, Brian pulled the plate towards him again, and this time Stone Statue picked up a skewer of grilled tomatoes from the edge of the plate.
Stone Statue ate the grilled tomatoes just as slowly and with relish.
Splashes of tomato juice landed on his fast-drying shirt, which was bleached but clean, yet Stone Statue didn’t seem to care.
Moreover, Stone Statue’s eyes had changed, they had become tender, completely lacking in aggression, no longer imposing, because he never made eye contact with anyone.
Yang Yi couldn’t hold back any longer, he beckoned Brian over, then turned his head away and whispered to Brian at the side of the table, "Could this Stone Statue have dissociative identity disorder?"
Brian was taken aback, then he whispered back, "You can tell?"
Yang Yi was equally surprised, "It’s really true?"
Brian sighed and said in a low voice, "Yes, he has dissociative identity disorder. He has two personalities, one is a sniper, the other is... a different kind of sniper."
"What’s the difference?"
"One is like a hunter in search of prey, the other is like... a hunter who has found his prey."
Yang Yi didn’t know what to say, he whispered, "Fuck! Is there a difference?"
"Of course, there’s a difference, umm, his two personalities are similar but still different, like a hunter in search of prey and a hunter who has found his prey; their mental states are definitely different. How do I explain this to you, his two personalities are very similar but never the same, umm, I can guarantee he has two different personalities, it’s just that those unfamiliar with him can’t tell the difference."
"How can you tell?"
"When he’s like a knife, he’s looking for prey. When his gaze becomes tender, he has found his prey, no, he has turned his prey into food. But how did you notice?"
"I noticed he has a cleanliness obsession, but he doesn’t have it when he eats. Of course, the look in his eyes is indeed different. I saw just this slight difference, so I wasn’t too sure."
Brian said admiringly, "No wonder Anna says you’re different from others. It’s true, one of his personalities has a cleanliness obsession, the other doesn’t, so Stone Statue spends his free time either showering or doing laundry. One personality gets dirty, and the other is in charge of cleaning up. That’s why he always needs to wash his clothes so often. Wait, now it’s my turn to ask him questions."
Brian sat up straight, then he smiled at Stone Statue, "Hey, Stone Statue, what have you been up to lately?"
"Hunting."
"What kind of prey? Humans or animals?"
"Humans."
"Bounty Hunters?"
"Yes."
Brian smiled, "I was worried you’d gone off to Alaska to be a professional hunter, and then I wouldn’t be able to find you."
Stone Statue said indifferently, "Alaska, ten years."
"Oh, then why aren’t you hunting in Alaska anymore? I remember your dream was to be a hunter in Alaska."
"People, more interesting."
Stone Statue put down the metal skewer he was holding, then he stared at the empty plate motionless.
Immediately, Brian handed over half-eaten skewer of meat to Stone Statue, and when Stone Statue took it and ate without hesitation, Brian smiled and said, "I’m glad you’re willing to help me, and I promise you won’t be bored anymore."
