Chapter 856: Chapter 861 Find a Reason
The people wanting to destroy evidence weren’t just Yang Yi—Eric’s need was equally intense.
By the time Wilson’s house had started to blaze with fierce flames, Yang Yi and Eric were already driving on the road.
Eric’s complexion looked rather grim, whereas Yang Yi had turned on the car’s light, engrossed in the contents of a notebook.
Finally, Eric spoke up.
With a sigh, Eric said in a grave voice, "Will I really get the money?"
"Mhm."
Yang Yi didn’t even lift his head; he was still focused on the contents of the notebook.
Eric turned to glance at Yang Yi, then whispered, "Being dragged into this kind of situation was really beyond my expectations. To be honest, I didn’t foresee Ian being so important—no, actually, I did think of it, but I didn’t anticipate that Wilson would go this far. What was a simple little matter has escalated to this point, and now it feels like I have absolutely no chance of surviving. Regardless of which side, the most convenient option for you all would be to kill me."
Yang Yi still didn’t look up, his voice indifferent, "Are you trying to give me a reason to kill you?"
Eric’s face showed a helpless expression, "If I don’t say it, will you not understand?"
Yang Yi just shrugged his shoulders.
Eric sighed again, "Ten million US Dollars was too tempting for me. I never should have crossed the line; there’s no benefit in doing so. I really am... It’s too late for regrets now; things have already turned out this way."
Yang Yi finally looked up and said, "Your deal with Mr. Wilson wasn’t that substantial anyway."
Eric gave a scornful laugh, then said in a serious tone, "If all my equipment came from him, I would have starved to death long ago."
Yang Yi took a breath and said, "Did you never think of killing me?"
Eric let out a bitter laugh, "Kill you? Of course, I’d thought about it, but could I? Even if I did, what would it change? I’d still be a dead man. Since you’ve been saying that you won’t kill me, naturally, I can only hope that you’ll keep your word, buddy. Having your word is a virtue, don’t you agree?"
Yang Yi nodded, but Eric’s face was one of despair as he said, "It’s a pity we both know that’s just empty talk."
Yang Yi replied helplessly, "Do you need to keep reminding me to kill you?"
Eric, with a look of resignation, said, "I don’t want to deceive myself. It’s like when you told Wilson you’d let him go, then turned around and stabbed him in the neck. Who are you fooling with that kind of talk?"
Yang Yi smiled and said, "If it’s necessary, I will kill you, but I don’t think there’s a need to kill you. It’s quite simple, what benefit is there in killing you? I’m thinking about how to lock down the news, how to erase every trace I’ve left so that no one finds out about Ian’s whereabouts."
Eric said with a mournful expression, "Yeah, that’s why I think I’m as good as dead."
Yang Yi waved his hand dismissively and then he addressed Eric, "Do you think, the Grey-cloaked People Wilson mentioned will be able to find you?"
Eric exhaled deeply and said, "If it’s really like Wilson said, and he kept my information very well hidden, then... maybe they won’t be able to find me."
"So, will you go to the Grey-cloaked People and tell them all this?"
"Am I crazy?"
Yang Yi shrugged and said, "That’s right. Since you won’t tell, and I believe you won’t because there really isn’t any advantage in doing so, why should I kill you?"
Eric still seemed not quite convinced. Yang Yi said seriously, "Maybe you think I’m just spouting nonsense, but I still want to tell you, I actually value... friendship more than you might think. Do we have friendship between us? Maybe not exactly, I can’t find a better word to replace it, but Eric, I really don’t have the habit of silencing my own partners— it might seem unbelievable, but I am that kind of person."
Yang Yi tore off a stack of papers from the notebook, then casually extended them towards Eric, saying, "This is the part concerning you. Handle it yourself."
Though a bit surprised, Eric grabbed the papers Yang Yi handed over. After a quick glance, he exclaimed loudly, "You really... uh, I like your style!"
Yang Yi reached out to turn off the lights inside the car, then he said in a deep voice, "Buddy, of course I know it would be safer to kill you, but then how can I be sure you haven’t arranged something for after your death? That’s the reason I found for not killing you. Reason tells me I should kill you, but emotions make me not want to do it, so I had to find myself a reason not to."
After finishing, Yang Yi smiled and said, "What do you think of the reason I found?"
Without hesitation, Eric said, "The reason is very sound. I was indeed prepared for you to finish me off. So if you killed me, someone would reveal everything. Yes, you’ve thought it through correctly."
Yang Yi spoke softly, "So how did you come to know Ian?"
Without any hesitation, Eric said, "Who is Ian?"
Yang Yi started to chuckle bitterly. Eric quickly said, "I just came to know a very promising scientist. A company wanted to poach him, so I found this scientist and told him I was an agent from a headhunting firm. I spoke with him twice, and then he agreed to meet that’s all."
Yang Yi could only smile bitterly. Eric sighed and said, "Of course, as a headhunter, I had to appear very familiar with this scientist and seem very influential to him. That way, I could demand a higher commission when recommending candidates to the company. As for any personal friendship with the scientist, uh, of course that was faked. As for this Ian you’re talking about? I don’t know him. Could it be you’ve made a mistake?"
Yang Yi breathed out and said, "Okay, maybe I got it wrong. I thought you knew the same person I do."
"I don’t know him, don’t know him at all, never heard of him. Oh, buddy, where are you going?"
Yang Yi laughed and said, "Okay, you don’t have to keep playing the straight man. Are you still worried about that ten million dollars?"
Eric didn’t speak for a while, before finally saying softly, "Well, it might be possible that I remembered it wrong."
Yang Yi spoke softly, "Actually, I’m really someone who keeps their word. Although the buyer still needs to pay, I could cover it for now."
Yang Yi made a phone call, then he said softly, "Coordinate with me. Also, transfer ten million to the Christmas Tree account. We’ll cover it, and make it quick."
After hanging up the phone, Yang Yi called Zhao Qiang, then he said in a solemn voice, "Pull out, you have to pull out. Time is life, things are more complicated than you think."
After ending the call, Yang Yi said indifferently, "Buddy, remember to check your account."
Eric said with great sentiment, "You really are a man of your word. If I don’t die and you guys don’t run into trouble, let’s keep in touch. If you need anything, let me know and I’ll give you an eighth discount. And I guarantee it’s a real discount!"
"How about a half or sixty percent to show some sincerity? Where else can you find such a quality customer like me?"
Eric was very firm and said, "Seventy percent, I really can’t go any lower, a maximum of seventy percent!"
