Chapter 83: Chapter 82: The Swindler
Yang Yi was taken to Owen’s office.
As the head of security, Owen was the boss of all the prison guards; in his position, he could leave on time every day, but today it was quite late, and he still hadn’t left.
Seeing Yang Yi again, Owen’s face turned particularly expressive.
"It’s actually you, how could it be you?"
Owen seemed particularly baffled. He stood up from behind his desk and said with a puzzled face, "Is the Boxing King an idiot, or how else could he have let you come out alive?"
Yang Yi shrugged his shoulders, looking innocent, and said, "I didn’t do anything; the Boxing King killed himself."
"Killed himself? He killed himself?"
"Everyone has their moments of weakness, don’t they?"
Owen shook his head, looked down and pondered for a moment, then shook his head again and laughed, "I thought I’d put a sheep into a pack of wolves, only to find out you’re a lion in sheep’s clothing, hiding your claws and teeth, making people think you’re a tame and tasty prey, but unexpectedly..."
Spreading his hands towards Yang Yi, Owen said with a look of helplessness, "I thought you’d become a plaything for some convict, or that you wouldn’t be able to bear it and would kill yourself. So, I arranged for you to be locked up with a con man, so you could live a bit longer, after all, you were sent in by Raymond."
Yang Yi was taken aback for a moment. Owen paused, then sighed and said, "It’s just the two of us here, so some things are better said clearly. Usually, when scapegoats like you are sent to prison, I hope they can serve their time quietly and then leave, but if they’re trouble-making scapegoats, I think it’s better for them to die sooner."
Raymond was the person who had Yang Yi sent to prison. He was the middleman. And of course, Raymond had to be in touch with Owen to make this happen.
What Owen said was also easy to understand. A person substituting for someone else’s sentence should best keep quiet once in prison. If they cause trouble every day and make it hard for the prison to keep things under wraps, that’s one thing; but if they don’t and that leads the judicial department to investigate, that’s an even bigger problem.
When dealing with a prisoner who could easily expose the black market trading in prison, getting rid of them swiftly was definitely the most hassle-free solution.
So, after Yang Yi got into an irreconcilable conflict with the Boxing King, Owen naturally preferred to let Yang Yi die quietly. While eliminating the Boxing King could solve the problem, moving Yang Yi to a high-security area could also solve the problem, but why should Owen bother with any of that? Letting Yang Yi die, so nobody would ever inquire about him again, wouldn’t that be better for good?
Both Raymond and Owen, since they dared to engage in this business, definitely had the confidence. Moreover, for a deal that would drag down many people if it went south, they would certainly be very selective when looking for a scapegoat. Generally speaking, the best ones are those whose death wouldn’t concern anyone. However, this time the situation was a bit different.
Owen pointed at Yang Yi, then with a serious face, he said, "I mentioned your situation to Raymond. I wanted to inform him, let him know that you’d be taken out, but to my surprise, he actually requested that your life be spared."
Owen was a frank minor villain, his words straightforward, so Yang Yi unexpectedly found himself unable to hate Owen.
"It’s strange, I told Raymond that you were as good as dead and that the person who paid to put you in jail had better be ready to completely change their identity. But to my surprise, Raymond insisted on keeping you alive. I don’t know what kind of deal you have with Raymond, but I have to say, his request gave me quite a headache. I thought you should be dead, so I’m actually quite pleased that you’re not."
After explaining with a smile, Owen waved his hand and said, "You did well, even knowing to fake a scene of Boxing King’s suicide. That makes things much easier. Most of the inmates in this prison are muscle-bound idiots with simple minds. They’d rather spend decades more in confinement than use their brains, so good for you. You’re in the clear now. No one’s going to press charges against you, and there won’t be any additional time added to your sentence. Now go back to your cell and serve out the rest of your time."
Yang Yi said in a low voice, "Thank you."
Owen shook his head, "Don’t thank me. You should thank Raymond. But remember, if you keep causing trouble for me, I won’t tolerate it forever. You understand what I’m saying?"
"I understand."
"Good, then off you go."
"Wait, please wait, Officer. Could I be transferred to the felony ward? Boxing King still has many followers, and I’m sure there will be conflicts with them if I stay here. I would like to go to the felony ward, Officer."
Owen laughed and then mockingly said, "You prefer the felony ward over facing Boxing King’s idiotic followers? Are you joking? Compared to the lunatics in the felony ward, Boxing King’s followers are like harmless babies. Now that you’ve killed Boxing King, no one dares to mess with you, so you’ve got nothing to worry about."
Yang Yi let out a sigh, then with a troubled expression, he said, "But I really want to go to the felony ward, Officer. Can you do me a favor?"
Owen frowned and then said sternly, "Why? There must be a reason. Why do you want to go to the felony ward so badly?"
Yang Yi smiled, "To find someone, to settle a matter, Officer. I don’t mean to cause you trouble, but there are some things I must do. Using Benjamin’s name to get into jail was just taking the opportunity as it came. Do you understand what I mean? I think it’s best if you don’t know some things. It’s for the best, for both you and me. If you still want to know, I suggest you ask Raymond. He’ll give you good advice."
Yang Yi decided to intimidate Owen a little, because by now, he had enough clout to scare someone. It was funny, but easily killing Boxing King and spending seven days in the hole had made him look like anything but a regular guy. So, Yang Yi didn’t mind enacting more of a hired killer sort of character, especially one from an organization.
Owen did hesitate, but it wasn’t long before he said, "I’ll transfer you to the felony ward."
"Thank you, Officer. Sorry to bother you with another question, but you mentioned earlier that you had me placed with a con artist. What did you mean by that? Is Chris a con artist?"
Owen nodded, "Yeah, a big-time con artist. Relatively speaking, he’s one of the more harmless inmates, so I put you two together. Any problems with that?"
Thunder roared.
Yang Yi swallowed and then asked with great surprise, "Just a con artist? Why is he in jail?"
Owen shrugged, "Of course he’s in jail because of his scams. You don’t know him? The guy’s pretty infamous. He’s conned quite a lot of people and money. When he got caught, he even made it on TV. What’s the matter?"
