Spy-x-War Showdown -
Chapter 769 - 774: Forgotten
Chapter 769: Chapter 774: Forgotten
The life of a spy is dull and dangerous, it might be thrilling, but it is never beautiful.
Brian was a tragedy, and so was Annastasia.
But Brian thought that Annastasia deeply loved him, even if she was KGB and came to turn him, she did it out of deep love for him.
Now it seemed that everything was fake, he had just been deceiving himself all along.
Brian felt desperate.
Glancing at the tomb of the unknown soldier, then at Annastasia, Brian whispered softly, "I just have one question..."
"Loved."
Brian was stunned, as Annastasia turned to look at him, her face slightly displeased as she said, "Didn’t you hear what I just said? I told you, you were the only target I had ever attempted to turn, and the only one I ever loved. Where was your attention?"
Brian swallowed hard, whispering softly, "Just wanted to make sure."
"As a member of the KGB, as a well-trained spy, I could fall in love with you, but whether I loved you or not, completing the mission was the only important thing."
Brian let out a sigh, saying, "I’ve heard that KGB swallows go through very strict training to erase all personal emotions, I don’t know if that’s true..."
Annastasia laughed derisively, saying, "KGB swallows, or even crows, heh, you believe in these too? They are nothing but propaganda tools invented to smear the Soviet Union. You’re a seasoned agent, let me ask you, can a person really be stripped of all personal feelings?"
Brian whispered softly, "Almost impossible."
Annastasia said gravely, "There is only one principle, the motherland above everything else."
After she spoke with a serious face, Annastasia continued, "How can personal feelings be eradicated, and besides, genuine emotions cannot be faked. To make someone fall in love with you against all reason, you must first truly love them. But what does it matter that I fell for you while I was turning you? I would still not hesitate to send you to the gallows, no matter if it leaves me in agony for the rest of my life."
Brian felt agitated, as this was the third time Annastasia had confessed her love for him.
Annastasia said indifferently, "When I was with you, I didn’t know if I truly loved you because I approached you with the aim of turning you."
Annastasia’s words plunged Brian back into confusion and pain.
"You betrayed your country for me, I thought that was the best outcome because I thought you might defect to the Soviet Union after turning. But then I learned you were to be a sacrificial pawn, to cover for that mole, and at that time, I was in great pain, but I still chose to continue deceiving you."
Brian was utterly bewildered.
Annastasia continued, "After returning to my country, I entered Moscow University. You were right, the KGB does treat its merited agents very well. Since I could no longer operate abroad, they gave me the best job, and also I still carried on the duties of the KGB."
Brian simply listened as Annastasia continued, "I lied to myself, saying I didn’t love you, but I found that I can’t forget you. Both the organization and I hoped to start a new relationship, but I cannot start anew."
Brian was finally moved again, looking as if he was about to cry.
Annastasia went on in a calm voice, "That’s when I realized, I truly fell in love with you, but you were already dead. I thought you were dead, so I had to live on alone. At that time, I actually wasn’t in much agony because I knew all sacrifices were for the country. My sacrifice had meaning, but..."
Annastasia sighed lightly, looked again at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and said with a face full of confusion, "But how did my country suddenly disappear?"
Brian was in tears, and Annastasia kept murmuring, "When I was arranged to enter Moscow University my identity was supposed to be a secret, but the KGB knew I was a spy. After the Soviet Union was gone, no one ever contacted me again; I was completely forgotten."
Staring silently at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and after letting out a sigh, Annastasia slowly turned around and whispered, "Until someone called me, saying you wanted to see me... Are you crying?"
Brian was in tears. He opened his arms and said to Annastasia in a trembling voice, "I haven’t forgotten you, I can never forget you. You are the reason I keep living, Kate!"
Brian was about to embrace her, but Annastasia stepped back and frowned, saying with disgust, "How old are you now, thinking that crying and wailing looks good? Do you know how ugly you really look doing that?"
Brian was taken aback, not knowing where to put his outstretched arms.
Annastasia took out some tissues from her purse, placing them in Brian’s open right hand as he was about to hug her, and said gravely, "Wipe them off yourself!"
Brian took the tissues and mechanically wiped his face.
Annastasia covered her forehead, shook her head slightly, and said helplessly, "You’ve made a mess of my feelings, you’re really too weak, Brian. Our love is a tragedy of the times; you can grieve, but you cannot cry, especially as you get older because it really is... just too ugly!"
Brian said softly, "These are tears of joy. I am just so happy to see you again."
Annastasia furrowed her brow and said, "But I don’t know how to face you. I once loved you, but do I still love you now? I don’t know. We’re both old, Brian. Many things aren’t the same as when we were young. I feel some guilt and some longing for you, but when I think about it calmly, it doesn’t seem like love."
Brian looked like a prisoner waiting for a verdict, and Annastasia was the judge.
Brian was just too clumsy.
Yang Yi couldn’t help but say, "The Soviet Union is gone, you’ve been forgotten, but even without the past feelings, there’s no reason you can’t start over."
Brian nodded vigorously, then in a trembling voice said, "Kate, let’s forget the past, shall we start anew?"
Annastasia looked at Brian, but instead of answering him, she turned to Yang Yi and said, "Are you Little Egg?"
Yang Yi was startled.
Without a sign of emotion, Annastasia opened her purse, took out two pieces of paper, held them in her hand and said to Yang Yi, "Yarebin said Brian was never all that smart to begin with, and now he’s completely useless with his mind full only of me. But the young man that Brian is with now is not bad; at least he’s someone with a brain. So, if I could meet you, I should give you this information. Yarebin said that these might be of some use in your hands."
