Chapter 714: Chapter 720: Slow Response

When Schultz was controlling the camera, unable to discern facial features or license plate numbers, he could only catch the image of an old man bending down to get into a car—but it was obvious that the last person to get in was certainly an old man.

By this time, Yang Yi had acquired very important intelligence. Even if it was just the image of the last person getting into the car, it was already immensely valuable.

"A white car, a black one, there might also be other vehicles and people waiting to pick them up, but for now, it looks like the people from these two cars carried out the attack. No one has left that building so far, and there’s been no pursuit, which means it’s highly likely that the people inside are dead—all of them."

After speaking slowly, Yang Yi looked at Brian and said, "These people are very skilled, extremely skilled."

Brian nodded slightly, then he said firmly, "Have you tracked the cars?"

Schultz replied with evident frustration, "No, the coverage of the cameras is too sparse to cover everything. I looked at the surveillance of several shops on Bernest Street, and although I saw the cars, I couldn’t capture their license plates. Right now, I can’t find those two cars at all."

Yang Yi said gravely, "It won’t be easy to find them like this, and once they ditch the cars, they’ll be completely untraceable. I think we should wait for them, at a place they are bound to go."

Brian asked in a deep voice, "Where do Corkdor’s people usually gather?"

After thinking for a moment, Yang Yi replied, "They’re quite scattered. Maybe we should just focus on Corkdor himself? Let’s analyze this—Big Ivan first approached Collins, where Corkdor’s people were protecting him. Big Ivan captured a live one and got the addresses of the others; then they went to Bernest Street. So, can we assume that Big Ivan doesn’t actually have much intelligence on his hands? They can only make their next move after interrogating for information."

Brian responded gravely, "Very likely."

"So, no matter where Big Ivan goes next, inevitably they will extract Corkdor’s whereabouts, and they will definitely go after Corkdor."

"There’s a problem, though; Corkdor’s people have been attacked in succession, he must receive news of it, and once he gets word of Big Ivan’s retaliation, he’ll definitely go into hiding."

After pondering for a while, Yang Yi said, "But it’s also possible that Corkdor didn’t get the message, or by the time Corkdor received it, it was already too late. Big Ivan’s men move very quickly, and are extremely efficient, so those who were attacked had no chance to spread the word before they were killed."

Just then, there was a knock on the door. Yang Yi called out loudly, "Come in."

A line of people entered one after another, with Zhang Yong leading the way. He then said in a low voice, "I’ve instructed Sergei and the rest, including Jethro, to wait outside. Jethro is puzzled about what happened, I just said you asked for him, I didn’t mention anything else."

Yang Yi nodded, "That’s fine, let him wait there for now. Not explaining anything for the moment is the best option."

Xiao Ran asked excitedly, "What’s happened?"

"Corkdor’s people have been continually attacked, just now his men were hit again. The enemy might be only six to eight men, among them at least one is an old man using a cane, but they’ve just wiped out a team of around twenty people, all within about five minutes."

Zhang Yong expressed his surprise, "That tough?"

After a moment’s thought, Xiao Ran said, "Five minutes, it’s not particularly fast, but yes, five minutes is indeed a bit frightening. Have you tracked the enemy yet?"

"Not yet, we’re still trying hard."

At this moment, Brian suddenly said, "Owl received, over."

Yang Yi didn’t have an earpiece, so he was unaware of what Brian had just heard over the walkie-talkie.

"Anton has already met up with Hans, and they are awaiting further orders."

Brian knew Yang Yi didn’t hear, so he explained briefly. At that time, Yang Yi reached out his hand to Kate, who was not far behind him, and she immediately turned on a walkie-talkie, plugging in an earpiece before handing it to him.

Yang Yi took the walkie-talkie and put on the earpiece. Kate then lowered the large bag she was carrying and asked in a low voice, "Do you need to put it on?"

"Not yet, we may need to go out in plain clothes."

The bag contained Yang Yi’s bulletproof vest and helmet, but he decided to not put them on for now, so Kate silently zipped the bag up again.

After a moment of serious thought, Yang Yi said to Brian, "We need to make a quick decision now. Do we have Hans keep a close eye on Corkdor no matter what, or do we send him after the attackers?"

Without much hesitation, Brian said firmly, "Aerial reconnaissance is very effective, but can’t be the sole basis for a decision. Keep Anton and Hans near Corkdor, and launch the drone at any sign of trouble!"

Having made a decision, Brian immediately radioed, "Owl to Hans, secure the target, and launch the drone if you detect any anomaly, over."

"Hans received, we’re near the target, over."

"Owl to Holy Water, any movement on the target, over?"

"Holy Water received, no movement from the target, no phone calls, no outings, over."

They had caught a glimpse of the enemy’s trail, but the enemy’s moves were too quick—just a fleeting glimpse, insufficient to firmly grasp the enemy’s tail.

Yang Yi turned his gaze to the screens and said in a deep voice, "Black Roar, bring up the surveillance around Corkdor’s residence, I want to see the live video."

The wait lasted nearly half an hour, but it remained calm.

Finally, Brian stood up from his chair, paced two steps in the room, and said with a puzzled face, "There have been two shootings in Kiev, and yet Corkdor hasn’t received any alert. Is Big Ivan capable of blocking news to Corkdor? Can he really go that far?"

Indeed, forty minutes had passed since the second attack, but there was still no news from Corkdor’s end, which was highly abnormal.

Yang Yi took a breath and said, "It’s possible, but unlikely. Big Ivan still can’t keep the entire Kiev silent for him. Maybe Corkdor has received the message and we just don’t know it, or perhaps nobody’s clear on what happened, or thought to notify Corkdor. After all, he is an outsider."

Just then, over the walkie-talkie, Paul urgently said, "Calling Owl, the target is going out, saying he’s going to eat, over!"

Yang Yi said in astonishment, "Going out to eat at this time?"

What sort of move was this? Corkdor’s men were being killed off in succession, and yet he chose this time to go out for a meal.

Yang Yi couldn’t help but start to suspect there was some conspiracy at play. Even if Corkdor was slow to react, he should have received word of the attacks by now.
