Chapter 688: Chapter 694: Fierce
Anton and Rodriguez each had a gun pointed at a person’s head; as Chris walked over, he reached out and pressed down.
Immediately, Anton and Rodriguez retracted their handguns. With his hands raised, Pyatov turned his head to look at Chris, who was backlit by the car’s headlights, and shouted angrily, "Who are you? Do you know who I am?"
"Pyatov, Kanchelskis’s brother-in-law, am I right?"
After Chris rapidly finished speaking in English, Anton quickly translated Chris’s words into Ukrainian.
The very angry man paused for a moment, then shouted loudly, "I’m not Pyatov, he is."
It turned out the man driving the car was Pyatov, and this man, who seemed very fierce all along, was not Pyatov.
Awkward.
Yang Yi immediately let out a silent lament in his heart.
Chris sized up the man who had spoken and then looked at the man who had been silent behind him. Spreading his hands, he asked, "You’re not Pyatov, you are?"
The man standing behind nodded, then puffed out his chest and said loudly, "I am Pyatov. What do you want to do? I’ll tell you, my brother-in-law is very powerful. You’d better be careful. If you dare mess around, he will surely kill you! Let me tell you, my brother-in-law is an arms dealer!"
After Anton translated, another wave of speechlessness washed over Yang Yi.
Chris frowned at the man who appeared very tough and spoke with curiosity, "I thought you were Pyatov because you look so fierce. So who the hell are you? His bodyguard?"
Pyatov cleared his throat and said, "He is my friend."
Turning his head to look at Pyatov, the tough-looking man shouted, "Who am I? You foreigners, who am I? Let me tell you, I am Eugene! I own a casino and two nightclubs in the city! Lay a finger on me, and you’re dead!"
After sounding quite menacing, Eugene adjusted his collar and then gestured with a wave of his hand, "Of course, you don’t know me. Bringing me here, I don’t blame you. Let me go, and I will pretend tonight never happened. You’re looking for Pyatov, he’s right here. Whatever you want to do is none of my business, and I know nothing about it. Gentlemen, how about it?"
This gang boss knew how to act according to the situation. Seeing that things seemed to be taking a bad turn, he boldly disassociated himself in an attempt to protect his own skin. What would happen to Pyatov was none of his concern; saving his own life was all that mattered. This was a classic case of every man for himself.
Chris remained silent, then he said coldly, "So why were you with him?"
Eugene let out a breath and replied, "I was just going with him to... get something, just to get some money. Pyatov was playing at my place. I went with him to get money. That’s pretty normal, right?"
Chris continued coldly, "So is it get something, or get money?"
Despite needing translation from Anton, the chill in Chris’s words was very palpable.
Eugene licked his lips and then said gravely, "Mate, whatever grudge or dispute you have is none of my business. I’m just a passerby. My being with Pyatov was just to get some... guns, that’s all. If I’ve offended you in this, then I apologize, but I bought them with money, nothing else."
Chris nodded slightly and said, "Oh, then it’s useless."
This time, without waiting for Anton to translate, Rodriguez lifted his hand and with a bang shot Eugene in the back of the head.
Pyatov was startled, jerking violently as he threw up his hands to shield his face before he yelled, "You killed him! You killed him..."
Anton kicked Pyatov hard, making him crash to the ground face-first, which also shut him up.
Chris spread his arms, astonished as he looked at his clothes, then angrily said to Rodriguez, "Fuck! Couldn’t you angle the shot differently? Look at the mess you’ve made on my clothes! Fuck! Fuck!"
Eugene’s skull had been blown open, with the cap of his head sent flying by the bullet, spattering Chris’s face and body with brain matter.
Rodriguez hesitated, then stammered, "Sorry, boss, I heard you say he was no good anymore, I didn’t think too much and just shot, sorry, I’m used to shooting as soon as you say someone’s useless."
Chris, with a look of disgust, waved his hand dismissively.
Yang Yi also got splashed with brain matter. Although he found it revolting, he calmly stepped forward and flicked off the bits sticking to Chris’s clothes, then checked over again before finally flicking a small piece off his own face.
Pyatov was almost dumbfounded as he watched from the ground.
After Yang Yi had cleaned Chris’s clothes, Chris stretched out a hand and smilingly said to Pyatov, "Let’s be a little nicer to our friend, help him up."
Anton reached out and helped Pyatov up, then said, "Our boss says..."
Pyatov, trembling, said, "I can understand English..."
Pyatov’s English was heavily accented, but he spoke clearly.
Chris was taken aback for a moment before nodding, "You understand English, that’s good."
"Why are you capturing me? I, I just, just..."
As he watched Pyatov stammer, Chris smirked and said, "Pyatov, are you the one bringing this guy to the warehouse for guns? Why do it? Aren’t you afraid Kanchelskis will be angry?"
Pyatov, still trembling, said, "It’s just a few guns, my brother-in-law has plenty, he won’t be angry."
Chris spread his hands and said, "Then why were just the two of you together? Explain."
"I, I, I know my brother-in-law wouldn’t like me taking people to the warehouse. So, I only took this one guy. Whatever he wanted, I would load for him, then bring him back to town. It’s always just a few dozen guns, it’s nothing..."
Whether Pyatov was selling guns behind his brother-in-law’s back or not was irrelevant, what mattered was Pyatov’s attitude.
Pleased with the important information he’d obtained, Chris had no interest in Pyatov’s halting explanations. He simply said coldly, "Pyatov, do you want your life, or do you want money?"
Pyatov looked at the body on the ground, then with a mournful face, said, "I... want my life."
Chris smiled and said, "You want your life, alright, a smart choice. But why can’t you have both life and money? That is, you can keep your life and get a lot of money; wouldn’t that be nice?"
Pyatov was stunned, then in disbelief, he said, "Get lots of money, what are you planning on doing? I’m telling you, my brother-in-law, he’s not someone you want to mess with!"
