Chapter 685: Chapter 691: It’s Cold Now
Kate had no choice but to come. Yang Yi gave Brian a call, asking Kate to hurry to Odessa.
While waiting for Kate to arrive, Yang Yi went to the port of Odessa; they had to scout out the terrain.
Yang Yi and Chris disguised themselves as businessmen, with Chris posing as the boss and Yang Yi as Chris’s subordinate, and of course, Anton had to be involved; he disguised himself as an exporter from Kiev.
With the information provided by Hubert, it wasn’t difficult to find the warehouses managed by Kanchelskis. On the north side of the port area was a large cluster of warehouses where goods waiting to be shipped could be temporarily stored. Of course, the goods here were those intended for short-term storage and wouldn’t stay for too long.
The main export goods from Ukraine were steel, fertilizer, iron ore, coal, and food. These were some of the major bulk export commodities.
Generally, steel didn’t need to be stored in warehouses in the port for a short period, but food was different. So Yang Yi and his team disguised themselves as grain trade merchants, coming to the port to check out warehouses for rent.
Since the turmoil began in Ukraine, commercial activities were definitely impacted, but Odessa, as one of the largest ports in Ukraine, seemed to be bustling for the time being.
"Kanchelskis has a lot of power here, we need to be careful,"
Yang Yi said to Chris and then couldn’t help but add, "Of course, there won’t be any issue with your current disguise."
Chris, the professional conman, was truly exceptional. It might present some difficulties to have him impersonate others, but playing a businessman was really quite easy for him.
Chris could effortlessly assume the role of an ostentatiously wealthy boss or a moderately successful, cautious small business owner. Whether it was in dressing or demeanor, Chris’s performance was consistent with a businessman investing all his assets into this deal.
Chris showed no signs of pride in response to Yang Yi’s praise. Instead, he looked around at the warehouses with a cautious expression and said in a serious tone, "How far are we from the target warehouse?"
"Not too far, just eight warehouses over. This one here is for storing fertilizer, but the layout is the same as our target," Yang Yi replied.
Chris nodded slightly and said, "There’s not much to see in a warehouse. The main thing is that Jefferson has already met with Kanchelskis. To pull off this scam, the most important thing is to make Kanchelskis’s brother-in-law believe I am Jefferson. What’s his brother-in-law’s name again?"
"Pyatov. Well, we’re not scoping out the terrain for the scam, but to facilitate sabotage in case the scam fails," Yang Yi explained.
After speaking to Chris, Yang Yi looked at Anton and said, "This place isn’t convenient for sabotage. If we were to use explosives, we would need a significant amount, and as for setting fires, forget that idea."
The warehouses were very large, and the key thing was that all warehouses must consider fire prevention. The fire protection standards here were very high, the firefighting equipment was very complete, and a fire brigade was on standby nearby, making it very difficult to destroy Kanchelskis’s goods by fire. It was better to give up on arson and focus solely on using explosives to resolve the issue.
Anton replied listlessly, "Yes, we can forget about fire, but to take care of the goods in four warehouses, the scale of the explosion won’t be small."
"It might be enough to just destroy the most important warehouse. The warehouse itself is secondary; as long as the goods inside are destroyed, that’s what counts."
Anton shrugged and said, "The contents are arms, and once they blow, well..."
Yang Yi had not forgotten that the warehouse stored ammunition; he simply hadn’t considered what the consequences of blowing up a warehouse full of munitions would be.
After a moment of stunned silence, Yang Yi waved his hand and said, "We’d better try to swindle the stuff out of them, uh, if that doesn’t work, then we might have to spend some money to buy it. I don’t want to drive the Ukrainian government mad."
At that moment, Yang Yi’s phone rang. After answering the call, a natural smile spread across his face, and he said in a low voice, "Hey, Kate, have you boarded the plane yet?"
Once he hung up, Yang Yi said to the two of them, "Kate has already set off. Let’s go grab some food and then head to the airport to pick her up. We have already checked out the terrain, there’s no point in staying here any longer, let’s go."
It had only been a few days since he’d seen Kate, but Yang Yi felt like he couldn’t stand it. As he called the two to leave the port area with him, Chris suddenly said, "Now Kate and Xiao Ran have split up."
Yang Yi looked at Chris with a puzzled face and asked, "What are you trying to say?"
Chris shrugged his shoulders, smiling, "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. You’re guarding two women but can’t touch or eat, better to secure one first. Now is a good opportunity. Xiao Ran isn’t here, you can completely make something happen with Kate, and if you’re capable of getting Kate to keep your relationship secret, we’ll definitely not blab."
Yang Yi was somewhat tempted, but when he thought of Xiao Ran, his heart felt a bit cold.
Trying to have both would likely result in getting neither, but, but, Yang Yi really couldn’t bear to give up either of them.
Yang Yi had only briefly considered Chris’s suggestion before he decided to abandon it because he found himself in a dilemma. He couldn’t bear to let go of either and he couldn’t bear to hurt either, and most crucially, he was afraid of Xiao Ran taking a shot at him behind his back. There was no doubt, if Yang Yi dared to two-time, Xiao Ran would genuinely be willing to backstab him.
The joy of seeing Kate was short-lived, all spoiled by Chris’s unreliable suggestion.
While waiting to pick up Kate, Yang Yi’s eyes suddenly widened.
Because Kate did come, but Xiao Ran came with her.
"Why did you also come?"
Yang Yi blurted out this question and then realized he had misspoken. Sure enough, Xiao Ran’s expression darkened as she said, "What, shouldn’t I have come?"
"No, that’s not it. I meant, isn’t Brian’s side in desperate need of help? Can you manage to get away?"
Xiao Ran’s expression softened, and she spread her hands and said, "I don’t have much to do there. Hans and Paul took care of everything. I didn’t even have time to practice shooting. When I heard something big was happening here, I told Brian I wanted to come."
Yang Yi took the suitcases from Xiao Ran with one hand and from Kate with the other, then he said with a smile, "You haven’t had dinner yet, have you? Let’s go and have something to eat. Knowing that you were coming, none of us ate. We were waiting to eat with you."
Xiao Ran walked beside Yang Yi and said in a light-hearted manner, "I heard that you had a contest with Anton and you actually won?"
Yang Yi laughed and replied, "It was luck, pure luck. Actually, I was quite worried about being short-handed. Now that both of you are here, it’s perfect, there shouldn’t be any problems now."
